New player with a question: 'if it's a mechanic, it might be a deal breaker.'

Hi,

This was one of those games taht I 'Almost' did the life time thing on, but then didn't for some reason or another.. then, I didn't even 'buy it' when it came out, BUT, when it went Free to play, I took the oppotunity to play it, and...

this game is AWESOME, I quite enjoyed playing it! The quests are interesting, the storyline is thrill a minute, I REALLY love a lot of things about this game. I 'Want' to play more.  (and I'm a spender, so  it's good to have me in game helping to finance it.)

Anyway...

There is this 'one' little bit that was just ANOYING the heck out of me... so much so that I rage quit, and haven't been back for a few weeks.

I see 'updates' in my e-mail, and I'd 'Like' to check it out again, but I keep on remembering how I felt on this one thing, and I keep on 'passing' on trying it again.

So, with that 'pre-amble' here's the  'thing'.

I'm walking along, doing my thing, killing bad guy's most of the time's the finghts are 'balanced' and aren't 'tooo' hard, but occasionally they ARE tuff, and I have to scrap just to survive.

the 'irritating' thing, is that fairly often. (I'd say about 20% of the time, + or - 5%,) at the end of the fight, a Mob named 'Quetilq... ' well honestly, I don't remember for sure, but I think it's the same thing.. looks like a mummy... anyway it spawns, and sometimes I kill it, sometimes I run away from it, and some times it kills me...

but EVERY time, I get pissed off.

it wasn't one of the group that I pulled, it wasn't a patrol that I missed, it wasn't an 'error' that I made in estimating my odd's of taking on that group that I just fought, it's just a random 'Spawn' that 'pops' in to existance and eats my lunch.

My guess is that it's in the game to give it 'spice' of flavor...

My 'hope' is that perhaps am doing something wrong, and can get rid of this aspect of the game that I hate.

So, a) my question, is first, is this 'random add on' thing, a 'regular part' of the whole game as Ilevel up? is it something that I'm going to have to deal with the whole game?

If so, I'd like knowing now, that way I don't have to even worry about not trying out the game, that really is a deal breaker, being that there is so many other games out there that don't have this 'feature' to them that I can play and enjoy.

or, b) am I mayby 'cursed' and need to 'clense' to get rid of this happening? I REALLY hope that this is the issue, and that I can go do what ever I need to do, to get the random 'at the end of the fight - pop, oh here's another baddy and he's mean!' to stop.

thank you for answering this, I really appreciate it. I'd have posted on the 'game's forums.. but apperantly the Forum Log in is seperate from the game log in, and it takes a while to get the account set up or something... either way, I got myself locked out for 15 minutes or so. I figured I'd come here, n see if any of my fellow gamers, might be able to help me out.

thanks.

Thank you,

zWolf -out.

I am currently not playing The Secret World so I do not know if there is an event or new types of mobs have apeared, but here is my wisdom about the secret word.

Some mobs always spawn adds, even as early as kingsmouth there are running zombies, when you attack them about half health they spawn a companion which has a lot less hit-points.

During the haloween event random mobs would get possesed by kitties. When you kill a possesed mob it would spawn a kitty that tried to kill you, after killing the kitty you get some special haloween loot. When a mob was possesed it showed as a purple swiling ring around the mob, and it showed an icon on the mob's buff bar.

Always check the mob's buff/debuff bar before attacking it. It should show special abilities for that mob. There are for example a couple of locations in each zone, even in kingsmouth, that contain nightmare mobs. Nightmare mobs are not meant to be solable and drop high quality level gear and other things. You can recognize nightmare mobs by their buff bar.

I once went on the construction yard in blue mountain with a friend and we run against some mobs that looked easy enough, just some zombie construction works. Ended up with an other player who was accidently there who helped with healing. Each of those group of zombies was as difficult to do at our level as an end-boss in a dungeon.

After a while you learn to recognize dangerous mobs, the secret world is a dangerous place you'll adapt.

    Thanks for the reply Dark.

I really did like my time spent playing and adventuring... I really 'didn't' like the 'add on' mob I was seeing - I may get back in game and actually pay attention to what I was fighting, and 'what' spawned etc.  if it's a specific Mob that 'spawns' him as an add, then I can scope out the battle and go in, knowing that is going to happen right there at the end of the fight - and it probably won't be so bad that way...

this 'vegas style' randomness (to me,) is killing my enjoyment of the game heh.

thanks again for taking the time to respond.

that was very nice of you.

I was able to post on the 'main' forums, and some one told me:

"this only happened during the "End of the World" Mayan special event, which has been over for months now. You won't be seeing him coming after you now."

Cool huh!  but kinda  sad that the 'End of the World' event ended my 'play' sessions - heh, I'd have been spending money with them had  it not been for that annoying spawn.

oh well, time to update, and get back in! the game really was cool! (cept that lame 'spawn from no where thing,' and now that's gone.. yay!)

    Thank you,

Yep, that was part of the Mayan end of the world event, and it´s over. No worries, these types of mobs won´t hunt you again (at least not until the next mayan apocalypse, should it happen again)

I don't think Anima or even the bees can keep us alive 'till the next one, 13 baktun is not a short period...

Yep, the End of days event was a bit harsh on newcomer players, lots of deaths happened right in the beginner area of Kingsmouth, etc. It's over now, so if that was the only slight deal-breaking issue, then welcome back and happy further playing to you :)

That totally was the only 'deal breaker' I kept wanting to check the game out again, but I kept thinking about those 'random spawns' and I'd convince my self not to play... it bugged me enough, and seemed so 'out of context' that it finally got me to at least 'post on the forums.' n sure nuff, it wasn't the 'game as inteneded'

    I'm super happy about that.

Did anybody actually think that was 'fun'?

    heh.

I'm just pissed now that I missed a couple of good months of playing, just cause I rade quit, and didn't post to see if my rage was 'valid' or not... (as often happens, it wasn't valid. :-P )

thx for the welcome back, I'm looking forward to playing!

Something's got to hold me over to the release of NEverwinter, right? hehe

Yep, you missed some good months of playing, the event was live for only a week or so (maybe 2 weeks, I'm not sure)

It was indeed a fun and well-developed event, just with an unlucky timing. True, a mayan zombie apocalypse comes always at a bad time... It was designed for the more experienced players (QL6 and above), Funcom seemed to forget that they dropped subs and a lot of new players will be in-game as well :)

I think there was a thread in here as well about it, you were not the only one who was angry at the mayan zombies.

So was the maya event like the halloween event that there was a visual distinction (either through effects or on the buff bar) between mobs that were possesed?

Anyway the halloween event was rather fun I thought, but I was already playing for some time, the first time a kitty spawned it I was quite shocked, but it dropped fun things, like shimmers to turn yourself into a zombie for a few minutes.

I spend the whole day killing possesed mobs to get the goodies.

It was less likely to spawn in kingsmouth though.

I think they wanted the end-of-the-world event a little bit more harsher, since it had to feel like the-end-of-the-world, like you are up against impossible odds.

errmmm I think you got that wrong with the Mayans, first of all the spawning Mayans were not attacking aggressively, only if you destroyed the crumbling mayan rune which "angered the gods". Otherwise you could just walk by or run away. I killed dozens of those waves with a group from my guild, it was fun and I got tons of special costumes and special FX out of it, even weapons and stuff to sell. Also had a very useful rare signet drop from one of the rare bosses.

The main thing for me was going after the event achievement, solving the missions, killing Bolon Yakte’K'uh in the 5 man dungeon in normal and hard mode.. killing the 3 Harbinger world event bosses... getting the quetzal bird.. ...

here is a wrap up of the event, I found it very entertaining and would like to see it continue in the future

The problem many newbies had was that some weapons have AoE attacks by default. For example, the first shotgun builder you get is a cone. It was really easy to hit a Mayan by accident with one of those attacks, especially because they often popped up in the middle of combat.

Overall, I'd say putting the event in newbie zones wasn't a good idea. It was a good event otherwise.

Yep, there was many cries of anguish about this during the event.  Basically, the Mayan zombies could spawn anywhere -- and I mean anywhere, and if you were in the middle of another fight doing AOEs, you could easily add them to the fight.  The Mayans spawned as neutral initially, so you could avoid them if you were careful, but they tended to pop up at inconvenient times.  Add the to the same time that the game went b2p, the Christmas break, and lots of new people coming in, you have quite a few WTF moments.  It all ended back in January, but I think the consensus was to maybe make the newbie areas the exception to the End of the Days event.
