Ive always seen EQ2 pop up in MMO conversation. I never really paid any attention to it, but googled it and Everquest 2 free to play popped up.
If anyone could give me any info on this game and the pro's and cons of free to play are I would greatly appreciate it.
Is this the game that people compare other MMO's to? Is it fantasy setting? Good guild set up? Still popular? Have a store like LOTR now its free to play?
Thanks for any info.
EDIT: I wont have new laptop for few days so wont get to try it (and I will try it) until then. So if you can give info great.

Why not find out for yourself its free to play ?
Short answer to your questions is Yes.
MAGA
I dont have as much time these days (family commitments) .. im also getting new laptop in next few days (hopefully) and with it being 7gb to download I doubt I will get to try it for a while.
I will try it thought and agree with you on - if its free try it yourself -
I also just tried it less than a week ago 1st time (to say the truth because it is now F2P).
Before playing it i thought - finally a game i could enjoy for a long time and even thought of buying a subscription that gives you extra stuff (in addition to waht you get in the F2P model).
After playing it i asm sorry to say i had enough at lvl14 - all these grinding reminded me of much i hated WOW and why i left Rift and SWTOR - just give me some good enviroment and less quests over quests over quests.
I could be the minority - but i left it installed but stopped playing it for now.
But hey - it's free - try it for yourself - maybe you'll like it, and maybe it gets better with higher lvls...
Just my 2 cents...
Hi, EQ2 is a fantasy MMO been around a while now.
It is now free to play with a cash shop, And other than that I think you would be better trying the game out for yourself rather than listening to what others think of it.
You will like or not but you will never know till you try it yourself.
if you're not super burned out on questing though, i think this is a fine game. i enjoyed it a bit more than WOW but i'm one of a VERY few in that regard.
i loved this game for quite a while actually, admittedly i have never played it since its F2P changeover. But me not playing it has nothing to do with the quality of the game or the new payment model.
so ya, as they said. unless you know up front you aren't interested in this type of game you really can't know until you try! best of luck to ya!
EQ2 used to be a good MMO till about 2-3 years ago when they started really dumbing it down (ie removal of all stats benifits except for life and power etc.) wsince then its just been a running gimmick with free to play generally being more expensive in the long run then a subscription. IMO EQ2 is circling the drain and being milked till SoE releases EQN
Grinding can be a pain. I dont mind it if im honest, but to much and I get bored. LOTR seems to have a good balance of what ive played so far. Ive never tried WOW. But heard the drop rate was so low on quests that grinding was a chore and a bore. (but thats for another topic hehe)
Thanks for your thoughts! appreciate it. Any other MMO you have come across that does fit the bill for what you are looking for?
actually i would recommend you try WOW as well. if you have a slow download speed they have a streaming client that you may or may not benefit from using. not sure how it would work with your connection.
but it too is free but limited, up to level 20 i believe? and they have really improved the low level questing with the last few expansions.
i really like EQ2 better, but the facts and figures say theres nothing wrong with world of warcraft if you're interested in that type of thing!
yes, WoW, EQ2, Lotro are surely games playing in the MMO premier league. add RIFT and perhaps Aion.
looking to upcoming new games, with most propably high quality GW2 and The Secret World are close to release and starting beta soon. also Tera does, but this is just a dumb asian standard MMO with great graphics and an aimed combat-system, imho.
played: Everquest I (6 years), EVE (3 years)
months: EQII, Vanguard, Siedler Online, SWTOR, Guild Wars 2
weeks: WoW, Shaiya, Darkfall, Florensia, Entropia, Aion, Lotro, Fallen Earth, Uncharted Waters
days: DDO, RoM, FFXIV, STO, Atlantica, PotBS, Maestia, WAR, AoC, Gods&Heroes, Cultures, RIFT, Forsaken World, Allodds
Thanks for all the help.
The laptop I have on loan manages to play LOTR on minimum settings (just) but EQ2 just stuttered. Creating my character was fun and the thought of a mage made me want to try it. Unfortunately I couldnt do anything, but the little tiny bits of help screens I could just about see seemed very noob friendly.
LOTR I am enjoying, but the lack of different mounts, magic (although I was thinking of purchasing the rune-keeper) mass's of empty land etc.. seems to keep making me look for another MMO on the side.
If anyone has anymore info on EQ2 let me know. Also.. WOW..
Basically if you guys could go back to any MMO you have ever played and play it for the first time again what would it be? WOW? EQ2?
WoW but I am not sure that I will like it if I started now for the first time. It's a very different game to what it was back then. But if you haven't played it and you get easily bored by grinding, I think you will love WoW. All the quests are very story based now, they are varied and there's no grinding at all.

EQ2 features housing too but may not be relevant if you rather adventure
I do like mentoring in EQ2, being to scale down your level to other lower level friends
or you can lower your level w a npc to do content you skipped while leveling
but as others have said - game trials are the best way to see if you like something
EQ2 fan sites
Great guild features ( levelling up guild etc)
Friendly community
Interesting class's and skills
Solo play as interesting as group
Good instances
Different mounts to just horses
Hard to get Armour & weapons that make it worthwhile when you get them
Populated community
EQ2 has guild halls whereas WoW and Rift don't. Can't think of any major differences.
I would rank them in the following order from best to worst: EQII > Rift > WoW
I would say WoW has the most interesting and distinct classes.
They are all very solo friendly. I found WoW and EQ quite fun solo. Rift not so much.
Too subjective. I would go with WoW on this one.
WoW has the most varied mounts I think, followed by EQII and Rift scores last here.
Definitely EQII! WoW has cool armours too but a lot of people question how hard they are to obtain. Hard modes are brutal though!
They all have high populations. WoW clearly is the MMO with the highest number of people playing, dunno how EQII compares to Rift. But if you choose Antonia Bayle/Freeport for EQII and a high pop server for Rift you will be fine.

I play EQ2 F2P,have everything unlocked, all content, can wear what i want, and use master spells all without spending a single penny.I just bought krono off the brokers.30 days full membership for 500 platinum. Now I had lots of plat from when I did pay a sub but I can now play for free for life.
I see your from Newcastle,a fellow Brit! I am on Antonia Bayle server which is US RP. You should seriously try EQ2!
