will we ever see another DAoC type pvp mmorpg?

herculeshercules Member UncommonPosts: 4,925

Recently went to my old guild site and browsed thru the forum. It seems nearly everyone i knew have migrated to WoW,EQ2,CoH mainly and a few scattered to others or just plain retired out of mmorpg.

4 years down the road it is to be expected. But this game was unique for mass pvp and no game has come close to offering the things you can do as regards pvp there.

Sadly if you told me 4 years ago that in 2005 no game will follow the revolution started by DAoC i would laugh. But sad truth is thats what happened.

And pls no WoW fanboi spamming about the BG been similar as it is not in anyway(unless you never played DAoC then you might think so).

Wonder if DnL will be able to offer us mass pvp?

    Hi,

I have not play DAOC before or WoW, but for one I know that there is a game coming out which has the mass pvp situation. Actually it's RvR, if you have heard of RFOnline, it is this game that you will be able to do RvR. Check out http://www.rf-onlinegame.com/about.php for more information (NA version), and the philipine version (it's all in english) will be coming out real soon http://www.rfonline.ph/main.html , while the NA version I don't know when it's coming out.

Check the game out, it's fun.

I'm really looking forward to Roma Victor for old skool PvP, they have a twitch-based combat system and as an old UO player I can't wait to play a *real* MMO again, I think Roma Victor launches early next year but am still waiting for confirmation.

Mythic will be using the Realm vs Realm type of PvP system in Warhammer Online as well. Granted it's not due out for a while yet but it seems to be exactly what you're looking for.

oh wow, someone from mythic actually posted here. thats pretty cool (if they really are from mythic).

yeah, i figured they would do the same with warhammer. pretty much everyone i talk to about pvp says that daoc has the best pvp. i played daoc myself for about a year and a half and while i didn't pvp much, the times i did were pretty good fun.

i think if daoc's grind was lessened when i played (i quit not long after the release of shrouded isles because it just took too long to lvl), like they did with later expansions from what i hear, i might have stayed with the game longer. keep that in mind for warhammer

I agree with hercules that DAoC has struck the finest balance for PvE/PvP of any game on the market and I pray that other games will use the same system.

If Warhammer uses that system then I think Mythic will have a major game on their hands. Big enough to give SOE's and Blizzard's sales departments something to cry about over lost revenue.

Sorry Ashkent but I have to disagree with you though ( not the first time huh ::::39:: ) about the time it takes to level.
Scrap the free level rubbish and keep the leveling harsh. There are more than enough MMORPG's with no challenge in my opinion.

Take a look at Dark and Light hercules.
They are starting a free introduction to the game soon ( stress test I say ::::35:: ) and it looks promising ::::20::

    Edit = got OP's name wrong ::::21::

I'm indeed really from Mythic, though I did get my start as a writer for this site so naturally I still hang out here answering questions and such. :)

The grind in DAoC is no where near what you remember. The Catacombs expansion almost completely removed the grind from the game, leveling is quick and for the most part painless now. I've personally solo'd toons from 1-50 in a matter of weeks, tops. And thats as a casual player, couple hours a night tops and not even every night, just a couple nights a week. Hardcore it and you could get there in no time I'm sure.

Its definitely not one day. I'm not saying its the fastest/easiest leveling system out there, it isn't. But it IS a lot better than it used to be.

LOL trust me, this is a good thing. It used to take *months* just to get to level 50... And that was where the fun 'began' at that point. Now you get to true RVR faster but you're still not done with your character since you have to build up realm points to get even better. In DAOC your character never really stops evolving. RR 10 is VERY hard to reach.

Took me 8 months to hit 50 with my main. I have never been botherd about hitting max level and from about level 45 on I was in RvR as much as PvE.
He is now Lvl 50 - RR7 - ML10 and it was the most fun I ever had in any MMORPG.

I know it's me who isn't the norm.
I know very few people are as fortunate as me in the amount of free time they have.
I just love a harsh game and hate the powerleveler mentality.

i don't remember if it was in this post or another one, but i mentioned that the people who want to level quickly usually do so because the they are told that the game truly starts when they hit max level. but most of the time, once you hit max level, especially in WoW's case, there isn't anything to do but raid the same 2 dungeons for gear, grind out faction, or pvp (all of which i found rather boring or too time consuming). there was nothing to do for the casual player to advance his/her character.

The entire "Endgame" argument seems to be a major stumbling block for our society.
I might try to sober up a bit and start a thread on the subject tomorrow.

Actually I've never bothered worrying about getting to X level. I just enjoy the game. If it's not fun from square 1 then I won't play it. I re-started DAOC recently from complete scratch (basically cuz I can't remember my old account name!!! LOL and I don't have my CD's anymore so I can't get Mythic to re-activate it LOL) (not their fault I can't remember my info).

From level 1 it's been fun. I haven't been bored at all since re-starting the game. THAT is what I look for in an MMO. I shouldn't hear "The fun doesn't begin until..." when I ask about an MMORPG. If I hear that I immediately tune out generally. It USED to be true in DAOC that "the fun doesn't begin until RVR" but the game has definitely evolved since then and it's a *lot* more fun now, at all levels that I've tried so far.

I have more fun in DAOC than I have had in a very very long time in ANY MMORPG...

So much so that I went out and bought new CD's and plan to resubscribe next week when my trial runs out.

Oh I never really went anywhere, I just post a lot less these days. I tend to try to stick to the official stuff pertaining to Mythic products (since its my job and all) and avoid the OT stuff as much as possible. :)

The grind has been that severely nerfed? Hrm, thats got me interested. I think I just may give the game another whirl all these years later. And yes the OP is right, DAoC had the best pvp ive ever seen and I was so sad when I learned that WoW wouldnt implement a similar system. RvR rules!

Just an example, my first level 50 took over 50 days in game played on DAOC. So at minium it took 1200 hours. The last 50 I did it around 8 days in game played. So I spent just under 200 hours in game there. This of course was also with some time spent in the BG (which you now get XP for) and I did a lot of quests since after the first level 50 I hate the killing mobs. If you really wanted to you could get to 50 in 4-5 days in game played now. I would say leveling has gotten substantially easier over the years.
