okay, im kinda on the run, so, ill quickly post some things about EQ2.
ITS AWESOME!
Yes, there is a grind. It takes several months to get to 60. And, with the new expansion, there is alot more raiding.
Only con, is no PvP. But, that is comming soon
I have played MANY MMORPGS, and this one is very good, I am not saying it is the best, but it is VERY good. The only con for me is, I am running on Dial-up, so it is laggy even though I have a awesome video card... Lag is pretty much the only downside I can see...
SOLA's FFXIV Chapter! (A Christian Gaming Community) http://solaguild.com/
I've played EQ2 longer without interruption than any other MMORPG I've played. And that's 1 year now. I have a VERY short attention span too. If that tells you anything. I still sit in class and can't wait to get home to play.
Oh btw, the others I've played are AO, EQ1, AC2, FFXI, EVE, SWG, COH, and WoW. And tha'ts the order I liked them in most to least.
Hope that helps.
Pros:
Great graphics,
Good music,
Quite smooth -no network problems,
Very good customizable interface,
Very good crafting system.
Cons:
Boring quests - only killing and lame rewards. Non functional items - you find mostly something that you can't use at all or it is of poor quality - it wont encourage you to fight.
Crafting system although very good designed haj major disadvantage - resources on higher levels are so rare and hard to find that they cost more than items created form them.
Very little amount of items you can actually use on your level/profession.
Everything is predictable - monsters are no surprise - you have them well described before fight.
Totally linear character. NO FREE CHOICES - as long as you level up - you get certain predefined abilities - it kills fun from customizing your avatar.
NPC merchants sells always almost the same items.
Harvesting system is boooring.
And so on. Everything is said, nothing is surprising in this game.
It gives some fun (I play for 6 months daily), but it is Limited Fun.
But it is updated very often, so perhaps it will be changed someday intio something a bit closer to the good old (too old) UO.
Hmm, tier 6 regular raws are so cheap its silly. Only exception is food raws, but thats how its been all the way. For lower tiers its usually the roots (used for oils) that are hard to get. The other its easy to get on broker.
The main thing that turns me off about EQ2 is that once you reach level 60, there's really not much to do except raids, writs, and rewardless PvP. It gets old after a while. That's why I'm going as slow as I can, doing every quest I can find along the way.
Personally, I don't think the isle is a really good indicator of the actual game itself. Everything in the isle is easy and travel times don't take too long. The reality, however, is that on the mainland, as you increase your levels and running to the farther zones, you'll find yourself spending more time traveling back and forth. And the zones usually have densely packed monsters that all aggro on you, making completing quests quite a tedious chore. I'm having a really hard time finishing quests in Zek because of this and I can't really do anything without being in a group.
yep the game is difficult (somewhat) and i love that!
they have gryphon towers now btw, so traveling is alot easier
read this http://www.vanguardsoh.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1044304#post1044304 then come back and talk to me about the vanguard/soe fiasco.....
Gryphon towers, another WoW copycat.
Definitely a pro, but the WoW mimicking is a con against EQ2's original design and lack of vision.

Final Fantasy 7
Erm... how are they a 'wow copycat'?
EQ2 and WoW were in development simultaneously. And EQ2 released first.
"Gryphon towers" are merely a modification BOTH games did on the Gryphons and horses available in DAOC to shorten travel times between distant locations.
Thanks for trying though.

Talking about copying ... In UO there is a great institution of wizards opening so called "Gates"
It is a spell that requires a marked "rune" - a stone that was enchanted in a certain place by a skilled wizard.
Somebody can then cast another spell on such marked stone - and this spell will teleport him to the previously marked location.
If a person can't cast a teleport spell (because is a fighter or is not skilled enough), wizard can open (for certain amount of money or for free) a gate that will teleport character to the marked location.
It would be great if EQ could copy this feature. It gives enormous amount of possibilities.
In UO marked runes with descriptions are even used as shop's advertisements...
Wizards are paid by shopkeepers to mantain gates in certain places to get them to their shops and so on...
I used to be a EQ2 fanboy when the game was in beta and at release. Ive recently quit as im just too pissed off with everything.
Im a hardcore player, was in the best raiding guild of my server - Runnyeye.
EQ2 raid content is very limited - for the hardcore player. For the casual player its fine/good.
To copy and paste some points from the people that have lost interest in EQ2:
1. SOE said there was going to be more than 2 overland zones to start with, took me 1 days to see all the overland zones there is.
2. Over use of instances =Lazyness. Ever notice that ancient table area looks the same as the giant area as well?
Doing a raid in Shimmering citidal now, its the same [expletive haxx0red by Raijinn] zone, with different mobs in it. How boring.
3. No sence of exploring. I dont care what SOE says about the large size of their zones, it takes no time to explore them at all.
4. Boring as all hell quests. Ashen quests for example. What a boring timesink.
5. No proper dungeon crawls.
6. Easy encounters, a level 20 encounter feels the same as a level 50 encounter.
7. Very boring grinding as a result of the lack of decent dungeons amongst other things.
8. Boring as all hell raids, compare plane of hate or fear against lockjaws. BORING.
9. NERF NERF NERF. Nothing like getting to level 60 illusionist to find that a good deal of my spells are just useless in raids. Im a crappy wizard with power regen and a coupla half decent spells. And thats just my class. There are endless issues with other classes.
10. The most boring tradeskill system ever invented, I sorta hoped it would be at least as good as Starwars Galaxies system that wasnt the best. Mining rocks? how boring. And the Tradeskill system is largly broken most of the time.
11. Crappy housing system. Not only isnt it in the realms of SWG's housing system, the cant even make it so u can sit down on chairs.
12 . A boring world that doesnt feel "Alive" just feels like a bunch of static zones connected by bells. Real creative.
13. Massive game changes. Changing the rate that people get Tradeskill experience. Every man and his dog is a level 60 tradeskiller now. Boring boring boring, and no challenge, I got no satisfaction from dinging 60 tradeskill at all. I had barely pristined my stuff to get there. Now im there, there are like 50 alchemists competing for business so I just cant be bothered.
Nerfing the level 57 master spells quest, poets palace access when half the people in the game have it and half dont. Balance they say LOL.
14. Flawed spell upgrade system. How stupid is it to spend alot of time upgrading your spells to master or adept III (sub level 60) only to find that they become useless when a new spell in that line comes available.
I cant say how I enjoy lazy hardcore players. Living oxynoms rock!
