Both combat and non-combat ?

I have not yet started to play Eve, but starting to investigate "career choices". I understand that you can be anything in this game but still time is money and spreading out your skill into to much different skills might not be efficient.

I am currently playing SWG (and have lost my patience about SOE) where I have been one of the more succesful crafters on my server and I really like the crafting/business (heck even when playing Diablo 2 I ended up trading as my main activity) side of gaming. That is what make me interested in Eve. had to love a game where scamming, theft and piracy is part of the game (even if I do believe in ethical business practices at least for everyone except your enemies lol).

I am not sure I want to become a completly dedicated non-combat player. I might want to get another account and make that a dedicicated combat character if I get hooked on the game.

As I have not yet started to play I am not sure what I would like to do but knowing myself I will probably start doing lots of deals in one way or another. But manufacturing do look interesting. And trading. And running missions... and doing combat, mining might also be useful image.

Not sure if I want to do any large-scale mining but some mining I will probably want to do (especially if there are resources that are hard to get on the market) so I will probably pick up some mining as well (and skills for ships).

To be able to get the skills to become a succesful manufacturer I guess I will not have room (time) for taking up a lot of combat skills or do I? Maybe I could specialize my combat skills (for example not going to battleships and settle for a cruiser and appropriate skills etc)?

My short term skill strategy will probably be to improve learning, get some basic ship and combat skills so I can start doing some missions to earn money and explore the game, pick up some mining skills. Then start workign on industrial skills.

Any advice you can give about choosing skillls etc?

Basically you are right. Learn some basic combat skills to be able to do some missions or defend yourself from npcs while mining, and then go for the industrial side of the game. Crafting and/or Trading in EVE can be quite lucrative, but you have to know what you do (ie *what* and *where*). Also its best to concentrate on Intelligence and Memory as main attributes, since most non-combat skills are relying on those (too). Choosing them high will give you an edge in training there, and since you want to start a dedicated combat character having the others a bit lower won't be such a problem.

Btw, as boring as it is, when you start your career you'll need to mine minerals to get the raw materials for manufacture. At later stages you can get them by placing buy orders in well selected places, so you are freeded from that "duty".

Manufacturing and Trading is not only game skills. RL skills are also very important, since you need to know the market, observe it (what is in demand and where) and act accordingly.

Mining and production really go hand and hand here, the minerals you get from minining are needed for production. The market system in eve is amazing and it allows for some players to make a career out of just the market. If you use it right you can rake in uber amounts of isk. Im sure it blows anything that SWG had out of the water (I know SOE) and at the same time is unlike any market system in all f the current MMOs
