Thinking about coming from WOW to FFIX

Hey there guys;

I started up with my first MMO about a year ago and it was WoW, and since then I've gotten disenchanted with WoW.  I've been looking at FFIX for a little bit now and I'm liking the more social atmosphere and side points to the game.

I'm just wondering about anyone out there that would have any non flamer comments about transitioning to FFIX from WoW.  What are some of the major hurdels in combat style, trade skills a good opening character etc. Above all... is it worth it

Thanx!

ill be glad to explain well WoW or what i like to call it kids game is a MMorpg that is mostly basic and easy to play. WoW was made for the average frist mmo player like yopur self wich is good you played it . Now FFXI is a lot diff FFXI was made for the average Exprinced Mmo player and person that likes to group theres no soloing in FFXI expect for beastmaster wich is a cool glad . with other classes you start grouping with a great number of players and start enjoying the true things of the game hope this helps and hope to see you in FFXI im sure you will like it =)

It's an awesome game, mulitply that by 100 if you like Final Fantasy. After level 10 you really need to group, but the great thing about FFXI is there's always higher characters levelling their lower level jobs to group with.

When Xbox 360 launches, I'll be back in Vana'diel.image

dude omfg, i quit FFXI to play WoW, and it was a huge mistake... I think WoW is a great game the graphics are amazing, the gameplay is tight and the PVP is much better, but the community sucks compared to FFXI its alot easier to find ppl in FF, the guilds are alot nicer, WoW is freakin crazy almost all the guilds lvl discriminate and its a pain to find a good party... in FF u aboslutly have to party and the system is set up to maximize that.. u gotta go through the /who system in WoW, but in FF there's a really unique and great system... . there are some drawbacks though ull hit 30 way faster than in WoW but after that the grind in FF gets freakin crazy... the crafting system in Wow is alot more reliable and i was always broke :(... and at about 40 it gets really hard to find a party... u could spend 3hrs LFG's and the JP's can really suck sometimes... but FFXI is definately a much better experience b/c of the great community and b/c its harder... i remember playing out in westfalls (Wow) as a lvl 12 mage (by my self), thinking dude this sucks i should be out in the dunes in a party kickin the crap outta some crabs... anyways check out FFXI man 1-10 sucks but once u hit the dunes ur gonna love it

It all depends on what youre looking for. WoW is quick, and leveling is not so hard. Easy to find parties (most of the time). FFXI, like it was said, is more of an advance level game. Its a bit harder, leveling takes a little longer, but they payout is worth it.

I wouldn't move from WoW to FFXI, FFXI has Major economy problems. If you want to play a mmorpg where u are consistly in the need for money (aka gil) then this is the game for you! If i were i would not join FFXI unless u know u are not gonna be one of the million of poor bastards that play FFXI.
Unless u hatting WoW then FFXI will not be much worse/better.

I've been playing FFXI on and off since the NA release and I have had it with the game. I canceled all of my content IDs and am quitely waiting for the end (of the month).

My opinion... avoid FFXI for the following reasons:

The economy has been ruined compared to what it used to be. Most people will point fingers at RTM, which is partially to blame, but the real culprits are greedy players charging too much for items and other players who want the item so badly that they'll just say, "screw it" and pay the outrageous price; which in turn justifies the inflation of prices in a way so everyone follows suit.

Square Enix DOES NOT care about their customers, only their customers' money. What's worse is, despite the bitching and complaining coming from players, nobody cares enough to do something to show SE that they mean business and want the problems changed (e.g. a massive boycott of the game for a month or two.) They (SE) have done very little or nothing to fix the RMT problem (it is even rumored that SE is receiving royalties from RMT companies, which might explain their apparent lack of interest in ridding FFXI of RMT.) The Game Masters, for the most part, do next to nothing about gamers' problems; instead they simply reply, "We'll look into the matter," and that's that.

The player community, in my opinion, is crappy and immature for the most part. Yes, there are many good people who play, but there are ALOT of crappy people too; more than I've noticed in other MMOs I've played. Many players are unable to type a coherant sentence and don't seem to understand the usefullness of punctuation. Many players will look for any excuse at all to place themselves on a higher pedistal than the other players. And, more and more it seems, greed is becoming a trend.

Paranoia and witch hunts are still a problem for many players. In the month of October I was accused twice of using hacks to up my attack rate (NEWS FLASH! a warrior with double attack and counter will naturally attack more frequently) and once of being a gil buyer. I do not use hacks and I do not buy gil because these things cheepen the gaming experience. If you have good gear that you worked hard for, those who are lazy and prone to jealousy will most certainly make false accusations toward you.

Egos.... there are so many silly egos in this game. I've never played an MMO with so many over-inflated egos. It's a total downer. I'm sorry, but if you have to use your video game skills to define yourself as a person... do I even have to finish this sentence?

Anyway, those are my reasons for suggesting you or anyone else to look to another game for you MMO fullfillment. I've played on several FFXI servers (Asura, Siren, Hades, and Lakshmi) and it's all the same crap.

As for good points... The graphics are nice, although there is very little variety in monster models. The game play in general is pretty nice except for the fact that it's very hard to solo unless you're BST (an awesome job, by the way!) I'm trying real hard to come up with more possitive traits, but it just isn't happening.

I guess my biggest beef is with the player community and the SE/FFXI staff. Often times, while playing FFXI, I get the feeling that I'm hanging out on a middle school playground or something.

I've switched over to Eve Online and I am much happier now. The Eve Online player community seems very mature and very helpful so far. I've also been considering giving WoW a try. People often point out it's simplicity, but perhaps a move in that direction isn't such a bad thing.

Anyway, even though my opinions of FFXI are mostly negative, I hope they help you in making a decision. Best of luck to you.

I read this, and all I can say is, man, you must play a different FFXI than I do. Where did you buy yours? In the FFXI I play, the economy is interesting and challenging--yes, there's some inflation, but it's pretty even. It inflates the stuff you sell as well as the stuff you buy. And the regular low-level equipment can all be had from NPCs for prices that *don't* inflate, so things have actually got easier for newbies. I've gotten to join a pretty fun LS--maybe they're not uber, but they're not a bad bunch of guys, and they're willing to help out (I still remember how fast I got help to do the Rank 3 dragon). Even in the newbie areas like the Valkurm Dunes I've lately been having good luck levelling. I could pick flaws in the techniques of some of my party members but by and large we got the job done: I got over six levels on a couple of characters in the Dunes last weekend. I recommend to anyone who wants a challenge from their MMORPG. If you levelled WoW thinking, "Good lord, this is too easy; anybody could do this." then FFXI may suit your tastes.

FFXI got old, leveling got old. Nothing new, go kill things in a group for hours and maybe, just maybe gain a lvl. I left FFXI as a lvl 51 WHM. I love the class but hated the lvl grind. That's all it is..a lvl grind.

The quests are lame, I mean come on.. what quests are there really? It is not casual player friendly at all, community is the rudest one of any MMORPG I have played (and I have about played them all).  Unless you have a static party or a LS that pretty much stays static, waiting for a party invite will eat up an evening. But hell, you can watch a movie while you wait for invite. so that's good.. NOT. Getting gil is just funny, you can't. The mob drops are the pits.

I have never been so happy as when I hit that cancel button on my account.

As far as WoW, I started playing it. It's great. I am a lvl 41 Night Elf Hunter and have np soloing. I don't care to do instances or the major raid runs so this works for me. I can play for an hour or two at night, do a quest or two and log off feeling I had fun which is a good return for my monthly payment.

god forbid you actually need skill to play a game.... or better yet, in an MMO, god forbid you need to be social. FFXI, in my opinion, is better than wow. Wow is the typical blizard fan base w/ 4 million 12 year old boys who live at home... they're all pretty much really annoying imature brats. FFXI community (which is majoritivly what i look for in an mmo) is very mature for the most part. i don't really want an mmo where i can solo >.> if i wanted that i'd play guild wars or zelda.

I bought FFXI for the PS2 so I am making myself love it or I should just start crying about losing 200 dollars.

But, it is really a good game. WoW to me is just overated.
WoW is like smoking, with every new patch you get closer to quiting.

ffxi isnt that bad a game really, half the problem is the fact that it started out as a game for the console kiddies, so while you will encounter decent players, you have to be aware that you will also encounter a lot of immature ones too, if you dont know what console kiddies are its an xbox or ps2 online player usually in the age group of 12-16, ffxi itself is fairly simplistic, but not new player friendly, the first dozen levels probably being the worst, your very reliant on finding a guild linkshell group, if you avoid the l33t3rs then that is half the battle to be honest, you can have fun with this game. whether its better or worse than wow though is fairly debateable, obviously wow has the much higher player base, but they both have pro's and con's, all i can suggest is that you try ffxi, you'll either love it or hate it.

Dont waste youre time and money, FFXI is by far the worst MMORPG.  If you like crappy games then for sure get it.

Well, as it was said before.. if you go for easy play and love PVP, then World of Warcraft is your place ^_^ if you are looking for something a bit harder.. well, Final Fantasy XI is your game :D

In FFXI crafting increases 0.1~0.3 once in awhile, the economy is kinda messy but I must admit, it aint THAT bad. I came to FFXI from Ragnarok Online :P so it's normal I dont consider FFXI's economy the worst. WoW's economy will eventualy catch up, and it can be seen right now, so, blaming ingame economy is not the answer to this decision.

FFXI requires alot of dedication, and has no persistent PVP, only a game called Ballista, with which you wont want to lose your time before being high level. Personaly, I do 100k from each job I level from lv1 to lv10, so, money is easy to get if you know your way around ^_^

But above all, ONLY PLAY IT EITHER IF YOU ARE A LONE WOLF HARDCORE PLAYER or IF YOU HAVE COMPANY INGAME! ^_^ otherwise I wouldnt advice it.. I've switched servers 3 times for this reason. Well, good luck on the choice :P
