POLL: Customizing Options: Allow Add-ons and/or Skins

Some games like Rift, do not allow add-ons (this might have changed, since I played!) and many don't allow you to re-skin the interface.  What do you think?  Should CU allow add-ons and/or skin options?

Allowing skins would be good. The UI skins Mythic came up with for DAOC were pretty lame. Once I discovered Derida, I never went back. I'm not 100% sure what the difference between a skin and an add-on is. If add-ons take a lot of dev time to put in, I'd be fine with CSE waiting until after release to make them work. I could wait on skins too really assuming the default UI is well designed.

Good question.  An add-on is more or less, adding a new feature or putting a new tweak on an existing one.  A skin is more or less is the look and feel of the interface.

I would love an extensive macro system a la WoW, but no add-ons.  If the default UI is well-made, there will be no need for skins unless someone is picky.

In DaoC I created a UI to allow me to easily see my goupmates buffs (all of them) so I could rebuff easier. I think stuff like that is fine especiallly because in DaoC even to this day as a buffer it's hard to tell what buff was sheared from a player and usually you have to rely on the player telling you what they need. In CU I'd like to see similar options because there are things people like to see in a UI that other players don't. Allowing players limited access to re-skin the UI would save resources in CU trying to create multiple versions to fit everyone's playstyle.

ALL I ask if they add options to mod skins / add-ons is PLEASE have some easy way to make it appear on ALL your characters properly.

I know this is becoming a tired thread of reasoning, but...

the original DAoC had no alt-tab feature, no mods, no way to bypass the game code.  (I believe someone posted how to change style graphics and was admonished for it by Mythic.)  I'd prefer CU to be like this.

Add-ons for a PVP game give an advantage to those who run them.  Sometimes a major advantage.  Therefore no to add-ons.

As long as the UI is half decent there is no need for addons.  Especially in a PvP game.

I wouldn't mind reskinning, but I don't want CU to have the ridiculous addons that WoW has that practically plays the game for you.  There's nothing worse than a player that isn't even actively paying attention to the combat, but rather looking at a bunch of raid windows updating with health information.

Then, there's the "USE [KICK] NOW!" addons that tell players what to do and when to do it.

My name is Plastic-Metal and my name is an oxymoron.

most games have 'half decent' but people nitpick and call them failures. add-ons are often too powerful.  If you respond by saying you can run them too, then you kind demonstrated they are needed to keep even on the playing field.

Some addons take the fun out of game.

Some of them are so good that you are obligated to use them. What's more you have to look at them while in the combat. You have to focus on them instead of having fun. It's not possible not to use them, because otherwise you will be worse than other players who have them.

    So add-on's - no.

But cusomizable skin - yes, why not.

Voted yes to both, but also prefer function in gameplay over fashion. Bang out the functions first and add the eyecandy later.

Skins and UI options aren't so bad, because everyone is a bit different or have different play styles and/or different artistic tastes.  I believe the game should allow for the option of customization of that aspect.

In contrast I believe that the majority add-ons take away from the game as well.  Either simplifies it too much, or is so good that you're behind the curve for not having it.

Though, I believe that approved developers/teams/testers should have the ability to create and use add-ons as a tool on a test server  to see if it should be picked and added to game's functionality.  Could be great for the community.  You got a fan player whom contacts the game, gets permission to try to design an add-on, gets some testers to try to it, and pitches it back to the game.   If the devs like it, they select more testers from a pool, forums are started, feedback is collected (is it balanced, does it add to the game without conflicting with a founding principle, etc. etc.).  If all is good, it's added as a optional function for everyone.  Could do the same for skins.  If all is great, it could be an option from a drop down that comes stock with the game.  Developer gets a credit, and something nice they can put on a resume'.

    Skins- yes....loved BobsUI

Add-ons- not needed if ui is decent.

  • wormedwormed Member UncommonPosts: 472

I don't want any of it. If CU turns out to be the atrocity that WoW UI's have become, he might as well give up now. Those addons are utterly terrible.

  • EllyaEllya Member Posts: 99

Yes for skins, and movable/resizable bars etc.

As for add-ons.. hmm.. the only ones I think would be useful would be useful map and crafting ones.

As other people have said.. add-ons can become essential to compete in pvp/rvr. It would be a bit like buffs. If they're needed to compete then they should be standard and available to all, or not available at all.

I recall that in one of the FP's Mark said we won't have a mini-map, which means that a lot of the add-ons I'd find useful won't work :P

  • ToxiaToxia Member UncommonPosts: 1,308

Absolutely not. Play the game as designed, add-ons are just cheats or tools towards the path of elitism. DPS meters, etc.

If they want you to have it, it will be in game. Otherwise, you dont need it, and it is an unfair advantage.

Wouldn't mind skins, some of the player made ones were really nice. I don't want to see addons in the game since that becomes a nice slippery slope. I wouldn't be upset if neither make it though as long as the ui is customizable enough to fix any issues I have with the default setup.
  • BordogBordog Member Posts: 34

I voted yes for skins and no to addons.

Mainly because I have spent so much time in WoW and Skyrim modding/installing addons it's rediculous. If it's not an option then I wont do it. :p

I also think that if everyone has to use the same UI then there is a more fair and balanced RvR. This is because we would all be using the same UI instead of some people using the normal UI and others having addons that give advantages in RvR. I guess I want to keep it simple.
