Hey guys,
I'm very much into gw2... obviously... I was wondering if playing gw1 would be fun for me.
I'm person that actually cares about lore and stories and I feel I miss a lot because I've never played guild wars 1. I'm thinking if I should pick it up. I don't really plan to play it as MMO, rather as single player experience, to go through the world and story lines. Do you think that is even possible?
Optional way to do something very similar is to find out those stories from some other channel. Are there books or something along those line, that would tell story of guild wars 1 in some nice entertaining way?

GW1 isnt a MMO but a CORPG. Think about a mix between DDO and Diablo.
It is pretty fun if you play it the right way, but the right way is that you get one or a few friends to get it at the same time and plays with them. Playing with heroes and henchmens is possible but just not as fun.
i enjoy gw1 but its not for everyone - w heroes you can solo thru all the missions
GW1 is more fun if you cam find a friend to do the missions with

"Setting and lore" does not need to be the same just because the game is another part of the same series. So not "of course" at all, just look at Final Fantasy series: compare VI to VIII.
"If I offended you, you needed it" -Corey Taylor
agree - its good price for the content and you will get heroes
start w Prophecies for the story, it has the most lore/landscape connections w the world of GW2
Guild Wars complete collection is the best deal for 30.00
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Guild_Wars:_The_Complete_Collection
gives you the trilogy *and* Eye of the North expansion and some other perks
your local Gamestop may still carry it -- but it cannot be ordered online

GW trilogy is easy to find but usually Eye of the North is sold seperately

GW1 is a good game.
But liking GW1 doesn't mean you will like GW2 and vice-versa, since they are very different games.
If you start GW1, opposed to what other people recommend, I would stay away from heroes - without many skills available and without knowing the game and the builds, it is much better to use the henchmen. Once you unlock a decent number of skills, then heroes are far superior.
Currently playing: GW2
Going cardboard starter kit: Ticket to ride, Pandemic, Carcassonne, Dominion, 7 Wonders
I played all the expansion of GW1, killed all the bosses and maxed almost all the titles (not all because I started to play GW2 an I leaved the game).
All I can say is that is very, very funny, but in different ways.
1) If you are only aiming at knowing something about the story and the lore, so play GW1 in all the principal storyline missions and you will have fun. It is possible to do it alone or with henchmen, but it is also very easy to find other players to make a team so you don't really need to solo-play.
2) Then, you can play all the game again from the beginning, but it is a "farm massacre" style of play, and it will take A LOT of time. But...it can be fun too.
My personal suggestion is the first.
GW1 is love of my live!
well Prophecies I found bit too slow as game playing (personal taste I suppose), but Faction, Nightfall and Eye of the North gave me very much fun PvE as PvP (and I like never pvp in games=D).
only what scares me and prevent me from telling you
"Yes, go it's great!"
it's my impression GW1 is half (if not more) dead. I mean it can't be fun if you never find people to play with and will run all missions with NPC party. Back at time we got great community there and got much to do! Now all seems quite empty compare to how it used to be.
PvP seems to suffer even more (I tried to join some but waiting was way too long).
Last time I got there for Lunar New Year, it was populated but far from what used to be (125 or more world etc).
Look closer before buy game as seems time is almost over there....
I'm very sad to tell this as I still love GW1 for all great fun game gave me, lot of stuff to do there, many degrees of difficulty for players (so even the most advanced found stuff to do) and so on.
try before buy, even if it's a game to avoid bad surprises.
Worst surprises for me: Aion, GW2
i love gw1 and hate gw2...
if you dont mind thats in fact not an mmo but a corpg then play it. it wont let you down
GW1 is very interesting and well made game. If you are a gamer and not only hopper you wont have any problem playing it, even whit its heavy instancing, lack of jump and invisible walls. The problem is that you will play it solo most of the time. Go American districts. And it will be very hard at the beginning, untill you get more skills and the whole idea of the deck skillbar.
For these very reasons you should pick up the game, you can get it all 3 for 30 dollars in a combo pack and the expasion for 20 dollars. Playing the Primary quests and doing the Missions will tell you a lot of the lore and let you know of why many things, are the way they are. Even will get excited when you see certain characters in both games, or mentions such as graveyards in GW2, you'll be all , cool it's that guy I met in the town 250 years ago, now he's 6 feet under.
Anet's lore team put alot of work into making things connect, anyone who as not played the orginal Guild Wars is missing out a little.
Assured Mutual Destruction [ICBM]
I'm the opposite. GW1 didn't grab me much at all. It's a well made game, I just didn't find it fun.
Still a good game imo. I occassionally log in for sentimentality's sake. I'd recommend playing through all the campaigns, Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall, EOTN. Lots of content, my personal favourite being Prophecies.
You can unlock items & titles in GW2's Hall of Monuments with what you achieve.
Just be warned there's not many people left in game, but if you can get a mate to play with that would be better & most of the content can be done with heroes/henchmen.
