12 years running, so it seems like it's doing something right.

glad to see how people money is spent

most games use money to keep the game running and atleast there bringing something new.this is how it should work

this game was good back whne i was younger . and the very first mmo i have ever played. the only reason i quit this was  everytime i get the best armour in game i lose it from dying and i quit.  if they took it away i would luv to comeback. but if they did it wouldnt  have the runescape feels anymor. unless they have already?

couldnt someone shed some light on this?

I have to say, it's looking like it might be pretty spiffy looking considering its age in HTML5.

It's turned into something horrible in the recent years, so yes, up until then it has been doing something right. But it is dying now and the 2007 server they opened now accounts for half their playerbase in less than a month since launch.

I consider this game my MMO training wheels.  I loved it when I played it years ago.  I actually laughed when I saw they were bringing back "old school server"  from 2007.   Old school is now 2007, lol.

Great they are still working on this game.  I doubt I would come back , however.  They are just too many other options out there. But I might have to peek in just for old time sakes.  Then again, someone once said " You can never go home again", so I don't know.

let's ignore the dozens and dozens of horrible ''mmos'' that have festered for years, and just pretend longevity is an indicator of quality or success.

People love to hate on Runescape, but I have hope for the game in general. It does a lot of things that have interested me, but i still rarely play it.

It has never felt like a 'me too' mmo.

It's interesting and the crafting is really in depth.

I was able to play it in my browser while working in office which was very rare at the time.

They care enough about their player base. They are updating the engine for the 4th time I believe.

I respect what it has been able to do and soon it will run in the browser alone without Java need.

I'd say Runescape deserves a pat on the back at this point... or at least respect from the community.

It makes money and that is a fact. Can we call it successful now? Ok so it has been around for 12 years, has a strong player base AND makes money.

    Would that not equal success?

Do I play it? No. It's really not for me. But I am not going to be blind and call the game unsuccessful.

As long as it is profitable everything else is just fluff.

I have a hard time enjoying point-and-click controls.  I didn't watch the video.  Are they planning on giving an alternative (like WASD controls) in the update?

    Negative.

I started playing this as a kid back in '06. It was great, I was a super noob (my first MMO), and I had tons of fun doing stuff. Stupid stuff, that didn't give anything to my character. But it was fun.

The community was fun (it CAN still be!), you just had to find the right people. I didn't play for a long time, and came back every 6 months or so to see the changes (I still follow the updates every day). To all the whiners how the essence of RuneScape is changed, just stop. There's NOTHING fun in spending 100 hours woodcutting that willow tree to get a skill to 99. NOTHING! Same goes for every other skill. The fact that they made it easier to reach max lvl is great.

The game still has the BEST quests in the industry, that's undeniable. And the OldSchool version is quite fun (tried it, of course), I like how the economy starts from scratch. Jagex is also great on updates, every week or two they pump something out. One of the rare developers who can be praised on that part.

i think the game was cooler when its was 2d back in the early 2000 or something

i had ton of fun but when they launched the runescape 2 i left.

glad that jagex doing great thought.

It would have to be turning some sort of profit if it's going to last for 12 years. Jagex isn't a big enough studio to just allow a game to "fester" for years. So yes, I am going to use longevity in this case as an indicator or measure of success.

EDIT: They also wouldn't be doing major overhaul or large content updates if there was no profit.

This is a good introductory MMO for anyone, why I remember when using Internet Explorer for the first and only times all those years ago.. <daydreams with big smile>

Yes it was good learning about fires and stuff and then moving further on in the game. It was basic but it was introductory, see? R3 is an attempt to get away from that? Be seen as more advanced? Good luck to it.
