Basically I think both the players and the Devs have become accustomed to having an in game mail system. It is great for the Devs to communicate to all the players relating to in game events etc. For players, there is no better way to communicate with people who are not online when important news needs to be disseminated. In this post I want to propose some ideas on how it can be implemented in CU without breaking the immersion of the time period we will be playing in.
I think each faction’s starting city could have a post office (FPO) where all players can enter and do their mail transactions (text only). No mail boxes at all in the game. So when you are out in the wild and want to check your mail you have to go back to the starting city.
Now as players build towns out in the RVR area they can opt to build a rural post office (RPO) in their new town. And now players have to specify that is their new delivery location. But the mail cannot be delivered to this RPO from the main city until a successful mail convoy can be escorted there and vice versa. The FPO/RPO keeps a copy of all outgoing mail until they get confirmation of its delivery so most mail is almost never lost. This way if the mail is stolen, burned during delivery to the FPO/RPO you will have a copy at the sending PO. Once delivery conformation is received back at the sending PO, copies are destroyed. The only mail that can be totally lost would be mail sent from a RPO and never got to the FPO (stolen/captured) before the sending RPO was destroyed (copies destroyed in fire).
Now we can get mail out in rural towns but these mail convoys will have to be escorted and protected. Something the players on both sides would have a serious interest in protecting/disrupting.
Obviously the rural town and its post office can be captured and burned down and we will be reduced to going all the way back to the starting city for mail.

I think we are looking at having things in game that encourages RVR conflict. The convoys meets that criteria where the pigeons pretty much would be the opposite.

I'm hoping all sorts of things will be "escorted" from town to town, location to location, such as basic supplies as wood and iron. That way, if you are in enemy territory, you raid one and get some resources to help fix up the keep you just razed! OTOH, maybe you could cut down some trees for wood...

While I hate to discourage anything that increases the opportunities for RvR, I think if you are going to have an in-game system for passing important information to off-liners, it cannot be disruptable in any way.
My hope is that there will be enough player convoys carrying (capturable) building and crafting materials from place to place to make it so that this would not be a noticeable increase in traffic.
Maybe this idea would still make sense for sending packages of items or mats and the payments that buy them, but for messages from the devs, or even guild leaders trying to keep their guild informed, this would create issues.

Good point on the under populated realms and Dev mail. Dev mail can be sent to all accounts not using the caravans. But the under populated realms could have serious problem, hummmm. No thoughts to solve atm. other than change servers.
