Why do people tell us to get a life?

reavoreavo Member Posts: 2,173

My dad rebuilds old muscle cars for a hobby. He spends about 4 hours or more a day doing it.

My mom likes to garden. She spends about 2 hours a day doing it.

My grandma (Gram), who's soooo sweet, I love her to death, spends pretty much the whole day reading.

My brother spends time over at his girlfriends watching movies (at least that's what he says he does).

I spend 2 hours a day playing games.

And everyone tells me to get a life!?!?!?!

Why? I think it's time we start throwing this all back at people.

I Think anyone who asks gamers to get a life, should get a life, instead of badgering gamers to get a life.

  • sidebustersidebuster Member UncommonPosts: 1,712

tell them they are too closed minded to understand how playing games is a hobby for people just like rebuilding old cars, gardening and especially like reading.

2 hours a day is nothing. People who didn't grow up playing games are too closed minded to understand the fact that gaming is the equivelant to playing chess or checkers or god forbid, reading a book.

oh and to answer your question straight forward, they say that simply because they don't understand and probably never will.

As long as you're not neglecting any responsibilities you may have, it's your choice what you choose to do with your time and life. Playing video games is no different than any other pastime.

It's one thing to choose not to spend time with someone whose interests are different than yours, but another to criticize them. If someone goes out of their way to criticize you, then they are probably insecure about their own behavior and seeking confirmation thru conformity.

QFE and i don't think it is possible to neglect anybody for 2 hours. 2 hours if anything is time to yourself and probably well earned. A lot of people also use the phrase, "Get a life" as a last defensive in some kind of argument when they ran out of facts. Think D&D in the 50s or something when "geeks" would be told to get a life becuase:
    1- People didn't understand it
2- It wasn't what they were doing, so it must be lame
3- New things confuse people and they are generaly afraid and take a defensive stance (white people scared of blacks)

    This bugs me sooo much.

Why do I have a life if I go to a bar and get drunk, or go do drugs at some losers house but when I log into a game and save the universe with friends I have no life.

So I'm being a little sarcastic but its not like I'm sitting alone in some dark basement playing solo games. MMOG are socal interactive games. I've spent may nights just sitting around talking to good friends ( aka real people ) who just happen to share my intrests. Besinds why would I want to go to that bar anyway, I'm sure no one there would care about my world of warcraft stories :P

Wait... have we figured out what the goal in life is? Ah, that's right. It's whoever can hang-out with their friends the longest. In that case, goodbye everyone.

If someone can justify watching every single baseball game our team plays (way too many people that I know), I think I can shoot as many Nazis as I feel like shootin'.

This bad rep that computer gaming has is on its last generation. Our parents didn't have video games in their childhood, so they don't understand the appeal of it. On the other hand, they grew up listening to sports on the radio, so they feel this is acceptable.

In 30 years it will be a lot different. In the meantime, just compromise with the rents if it bothers them that much, or get another hobby along with gaming. I personally have become a Table-Tennis addict since coming up to college. It really is a nice break from the computer.

    I am a gamer ... and I can tell you ....

    GET A LIFE!

All the activities you stated (well except watching movies at the girlfriends house .. hehe)
Are way healthier than gaming. Both for the brain and for the body.

The problem is that most of us can help it. I myself tried to go without gaming but i couldnt pull it of longer than a month ::::02::

Such is the addiction.... But hey ...

At least we are doing something that we love - and that is worth it

Games can be intellectually stimulating. I can tell you with complete honesty that I've always had straight 10s for English simply because I grew up with videogames and other people in my class haven't. And by playing RTS games, my knowledge of basic combat tactics and formations is comparable to that of sergeants at least. Also, from playing somewhat historically accurate games like "Rome: Total War" my knowledge of history exceeds that of many high school teachers, but that could also be due to that games like these have made me research ancient history.

For example, ask anybody in your class who Gaius Marius was - and the only one able to answer that is probably a gamer, or a history fanatic.

Also, people who frequently play shooters have (on average) far better hand-eye coordination and reflexes than their peers that don't game.

Because there is a stereotype of gamers being lonely teenage boys who live in their mum's basement and it must not die. Also they haven't grown up with it they don't understand like when tv came out, people that watched tv needed a life then.

And reading, fixing a car and watching movies aren't exactly healthy either...the only hobbyists who could consider themselves as "more healthy" because of their hobby are those into athletic sports/excercise...

And we ALL know the stats on how young athletes die compared to the rest of the community...

"Accurate statistics are not available but experts believe that between 4 - 8 apparently fit and healthy young people die each week [gawdang EVERY WEEK!] as a result of Sudden Cardiac Death, undetected cardiac abnormalities, many of them during or immediately after physical activity.  Any athlete who has an undetected cardiac abnormality is inevitably particularly at risk". - http://www.cry.dircon.co.uk/sports_cardiology.htm

Just think about THAT next time you play a stupid sport...image...since when did a gamer die of SCD...hehe

Well, my dad said it's because I had nothing to show for it. But I do. I have my fun, my character, and my memories. Like everyone says it's a hobby. Like toy trains.
But it just makes me so mad, because everyone acts like I'm wasting my time. But they sit and watch tv the same amount of time I play games. And I HATE television. I'm just fed up with it.

spending hours in front of a box/screen probably IS a waste of time when you think about the hundred better things we could be doing.

Gamers that tell other gamers to get a life are usually using their biggest insult/critic  as their last resort .

Since most probably a lot of them knows from personal experience that spending 8+ hours in front of DirtySockOnline is really bad for their Real life social relationships .

So in the bitter end they are a bunch of little hypocrites , for they use a critic on others which they should probably use on 'emselves first.

Saying that , whoever feels offended by this crap , should really think about how much time he spends in front of the Pc .For if there is something i know for sure is that an unwanted truth  hurts...

Games  are everyone's hobby in here . And while they have in a certain degree an influence in productive thinking   and reflexes  (depending on the game genere you play the most) that influence is limited .

A person grows in experience while reading , listening , doing various things . Limiting your activity majorly in a single thing doesnt help your mental growth.

    just looking for trouble
..anyone got a problem with that..?

Most games require a considerably larger amount of brain resources then even Chess.  I think Chess is borring because its just like a game of memory, whoever memorizes the most moves wins.  Its very one dimensional.

The only negative aspect of gaming I can think of is its extremely unhealthy.  But then again, so is watching TV (which destroys braincells).  Only tribes in the Amazon dont have TV's these days, I guess theyre the only ones with a life.

The life my father likes to relive in his childhood memories with me involves property destruction and stealing.  I never understood how he told me those stories with a smile on his face.  Im starting to think the baby boomer generation is evil.  EEEEVIL!

Exactly and it's unhealthy. Fixing car in 4 hours is much more healthy than playing games in 2 hours. Same with working in the garden and so on. All activities that involve physical work are much better for you than playing a computer. Nobody can denie that. Noone has yet said to me get a life, but they have said I should play less because it's not healthy for me.

These days I take every oppurtunity I can to remind my mom of all the times she told me to "Stop playing those video games and go outside to play or something!" or even better "No video games, do something that will get you somewhere in life, go study or read a book!"...

Yes, I'm petty, but I get to laugh at her a lot these days. :)

So everything we do in life is supposed to be rated on it's health factor?  I play games about two hours a day.  I also go to the gym 3 times a week and could probably beat just about anyone who doesn't play games in a 10k run.  But I still catch crap from people who say I play too much.  Yet all they do is talk about what was on tv last night.  I don't even know the shows that are tv anymore because I got so sick of it.  But they never tell each other to get a life and quit watching tv.  It's a double standard.

    I agree with Reavo, it's B.S.

Health: the slowest possible rate at which we die.

I do think people who never move and become so fat they can hardly stand need to get off and do something else, but if you're still active and have some contact with the real world play as much as you like.

it all depends on your outlook. for me, i honestly would rather enjoy the time i'm here rather than prolong a life i'm not enjoying. i play basketball with friends and stuff, but when we're done, i go and play video games. rebuilding a car may be fun and healthy to one person, but to another it may be boring and frustrating (which could lead to high blood pressure ;) ).

the problem definately the generation gap. like 2-3 years ago during winter break i sat at home playing video games pretty much nonstop (got FF7... lol), and they ended up sending me to a psychologist cause they thought i was depressed, when i was having the time of my life.

i'd say just ignore it. if you enjoy what you do, screw everyone else.

    I have three hobbies atm.

    1)  Gaming - it's cheap and my wife loves it as well.  It sure as hell is cheaper than going to the bar/movies/bowling and everything else we do on occasion.

    2)  Loving my wife...nuff said.

    3)  Playing with my son.

(Note that is not in order of importance).

Now I look at my old man (who doesn't understand me and never will).  His hobbies change monthly.  He dabbles in farming (aka loses about $25k a year on junk he buys), trying to start his own ranch (has sheltlons (sp?), buffalo, donkeys, cows, and horses) and he spends lots of money there too just for feeding and vet bills and I've never heard of him get a return, and just recently he bought a stock car chassis...and has sunk $5000 into the block, heads, suspension, and tires (he hasn't driven it yet since the season doesn't start til Spring, so no return yet)...That's my entire yearly income that he spends and will probably never see a return (ya he has a damned good job).

Now what I'm trying to say...is that the people that rebuild old muscle cars (mopar especially) spend ALOT of money on parts and will never see that money back.  Sure they have a very sweet car (my uncle is a mopar fanatic), but it costs $2000/6mo. to insure each of his beauties.  For what my uncle and old man spend...I could have a kick ass PC for me, my wife, and my son.  Plus any game I would ever want.  My hobbie started because I was a poor college student (not entirely poor anymore, but certainly not well off), and now I still have my inexpensive hobbie...

As for the health issues...get a wife and have a little boy..enough of a work out for about anyone to stay fit image.  I would suggest to the OP if your old man continues to complain about your no life...help him out with his hobbie for a bit so you have something to talk about, but pull the cost of hobbie card sparingly with parents.  Now there is another hobbie I wanna try...being an actual blacksmith.

They tell you to get a life because what you're doing isn't 'good enough' for them. But you know what? F' them. Different people like different things, we just happen to like gaming. You just gotta know what to say to them if they're pissing you off. Things to note:

    - The Video Game industry has surpassed the ENTIRE Movie industry in revenue the last few years.

    - People used to say that if you read comic books you had no life. If you watched more than an hour of tv at a time, you had no life. And so on. Video Games are just today's scapegoat.

    - It's a proven fact that that lathroscopic surgeons that play video games regularly, or even right before an operation, are more effective in those operations.

    - There's far worse you could be doing. Smoking crack, unplanned pregnancy, etc. Atleast you're not really hurting anyone or doing anything illegal.

So basically, it's your life, and you are allowed to live it the way you want. Tell them to stop trying to control you. Tell them to grow up or something.

Edit: Oh by the way, atleast gaming is INTERACTIVE, and if you play online games, it's social. Staring at the idiot box TV is far less mentally stimulating. (usually)
