Finally, It Feels Like Star Wars
You're going to hear a lot of angry dismissal of the New Game Enhancements being introduced into Star Wars Galaxies, but let's "tell the truth and shame the devil", as Shakespeare wrote -- love it or hate it, the new planetside game feels and plays much more like Star Wars now than it ever has before.
I've noticed that the people who hate the new changes generally love the **game mechanics** of the original SWG more than they care whether or not that game was a true Star Wars experience. They're angry at the loss of a familiar gameplay style they were comfortable with, and the Star Wars-ness of the game matters far less to them.
I have a couple of established characters in SWG and (as of this writing on 11/17/05) there are bugs in the new game which make the conversion of existing characters less than perfect (i.e. they don't currently get the level-related weapon and item rewards they're supposed to getting). This IS SOE, after all, and they're somewhat notorious for rushing things to live servers without sufficient beta testing.
BUT SOE is already aware of the conversion problem and is working on a hotfix patch as I write this. Unlike many, I don't expect perfection-on-release from any online game, nor do I believe that 15 bucks a month buys me my own personal dev team.
All this said, any NEW characters you create seem to work very well. The new tutorial zone is excellent, and again, it all (finally) feels more like Star Wars when you play planetside (space play always had that Star Wars feel).
Faster action, linked quests, a more streamlined interface -- there's much to recommend here if you actually want to play a *Star Wars* game.
Some purists complain about the inclusion of Force-sensitive (pre-Jedi/Dark Jedi) characters as a basic class in a game which is supposed to be set somewhere between the end of the original Star Wars and the beginning of The Empire Strikes Back. The truth is, there have *always* been "too many" Jedi in the game, ever since the path to Jedi-hood was first discovered and posted all over the internet.
SOE tried to make Jedi a rare profession in a couple of ways, but it didn't work. Players who want their lightsaber will grind to get it, no matter what.
So now, SOE has mainstreamed Force sensitives and doesn't "hide" from the issue. It will still be many, many levels before a Force-sensitive sees his or her first lightsaber -- but now the character class is balanced to be a part of the game as a whole, rather than some rare uber-1337 profession.
I'm sure that those who hate the changes have already paid assassins to kill me for daring to challenge their views, but I'm telling you my honest, personal opinion: this is not the old SWG, but if you want a game that's closer to Star Wars than SWG has ever been, you might want to pick up a timecard and the SWG Starter Kit and give it a try. It's not Knights of the Old Republic, nor Battlefront II, but Star Wars Galaxies is now more truly Star Wars than it's ever been before.

kidding, its not julio but hey it might as well be! another gem from the gamespot player review area for the new SWG 'starter' kit. does LA pay people to post stuff like this? or is this guy playing the same game i am..
anyone who played the NGE feel free too write your own review..

Whether or not they are going in the right direction is meaningless in the face of the disaster they have created with their implementation.
These kind of major changes are always hard to swallow for an existing veteran playerbase, but THESE specific changes...change everything again.
Even with the poor experience SOE had with the CU, they therefore did it anyway, with no regard to the players.
You can tell this by the fact that - nothing is working properly. For example, veteran players looking to actually play the new version are scared off by inability to have an accurate respec. Result? Thuderheart makes a statement claiming "it will be fixed in an upcoming patch."
The SWG team has traditionally done little right. This is due to a weak management, providing few realistic sets of priorities, and as a result the customer always ends up regarded last.
In any other industry, even in the US, the people responsible for a disaster of this magnitude would never find a job there again. At SOE, it's traditional to f*ck the customer in some form or another, usually in some major fashion, and to the point that they may go so far as to never play an MMO again.
I was looking forward to the changes, but now it seems it will be a month before I can even begin to expect to get the game in a non-game-breaking state. (at LEAST a month)
To me it's not a matter of whether the listed changes sound good on paper, but where the customer (me) is located in their list of priorities if such a thing exists. What I see is that nothing at all has changed at SOE and the customer is still sitting squarely on the bottom of that list, and therefore I can expect the same experience.
After all, it's the...exact...same...people...that have brought you all the other buggy and unfinished versions of the game in the past. They just have new titles.

Define more star warzy for us all is all I must say to that reviewer.
I played it and dont see it. Even guild wars has more noob quests for its professions in its noob zone. Star Wars galaxies. Where the adventure ends and the grind begins.......
That perfect summarizes there game.
Oh and to get from lvl 80-90 gotta buy the expansion otherwise you will never get to the highest level. Nice eh?
I HATE the NGE. I think combat is cumbersome fustrating and stupid (couldn't think of a better adjective to convey my fustration). I think the classes are boring and leveling up brings no excitement since most of the time you have every skill you'll ever use by level 10 so after that you just get upgrades to the skills you were already using. I think melee combat is rediculously hard and the whole thing sucks.
All that being said, I do have to admit, I do feel it is more like Star Wars. I think the new professions and the quicker style combat is much more like the movies than any previous version.
Oh and everyone should have known it was Julio Torres, since he has nothing to do with Community Relations as it says in the post. He's the Producer.
If that's really Torres, he really needs to be fired.

honestly i realy didnt mean for anyone to tke that whole 'julies torres' thing seriously. the truth of the matter is im hearing terms like 'starwarzy feeling' alot from the dev's and i think even from julies himself. i believe its getting to be the 'choice of the next generation' ala coke of the swg cmmunity.
but the odd thng is why are supposive 'fans' repeating it? well my question is going to sound like a conspericy but do comapnies like LA or SOE have people that actually go out to hype there game like this? if it is wouldnt you concider it a type of deception?
i remeber after the ign nge poll one of the devs said something to the effect and dont quote me on this 'that you cant take such polls seriously that people just delete there cookies and re-poll' then the guy in the sig said something like it was ip-locked so you cant vote more then once then he answered something to the effect 'that it wasnt yesterday'..
he probably was just joking around or tested too see the validity of the poll. im almost sure that was the case but then again who know? kinda makes ya think..
I have to disagree with this.
IF they accomplish what they said they are doing, given the details on paper, then they are succeeding in actually bringing the Star Wars to SWG finally.
That's not to say SOE personnel are not involved deeply in public conspiracies. One has outright admitted to padding public polls, and if one does this and slipped up by stating so, how many more are posting right here in this forum and claiming the game is perfect in its nature? You do the math. If it's all of them, it could be hundreds involved.
It can hardly be considered 'theory' when people start admitting to the acts lol.
Second, their PR has been a nightmare. Even their chief public relations guy has taken to dissing their own community in the forums.
The thing is, they have no legs to stand on here. They have no right to take the arrogant stance this time. Although they might be making good changes, ONE this is the second time within a year they have completely tossed the old system and started fresh, an act that is borderline criminal, and TWO they implemented it once again in a totally broken and game-breaking state.
The people responsible should be fired so hard their grandmothers would be out of a job.
But that doesn't mean all the changes are BAD. I'm going to remain realistic about this. If they succeed in making it Star Warsy, then they have finally done what they should have done 5 years ago.
