What's next generation MMORPG mean anyways

porgieporgie Member Posts: 1,516

I hear people saying that EQ2 and WoW are the next generation MMORPG's on the market.

I seriously don't know what that means. What's the generational jump everyone is referring too?

Is a game like DAoC a next generation game? Or how about Lineage II? or are those the only two. I'm asking which games to kind of get a feel as to what everyone means. So if you can name some more for reference.

I played EQ1 forever (still do) and with EQ2 and WoW besides streamlining the whole process to make leveling and healing faster I haven't noticed much else in difference. (Well graphics aside or course).

Thanks.

Something the people in marketing say, meaning it should come with all new features along with the base of the previous generation. (Think the next gen consoles: xbox360, PS3, Revolution) However, Wow and EQ2 really shouldnt be called next gen since they really didnt bring anything fresh and new to the mmo genre, except prettier graphics. I consider WISH(RIP, this should have come out, instead of EQ2 and WoW) and Dark and Light next gen

eq2 and WoW are 2 games that are apart of the 3rd generation of mmorpgs

the next generation of mmorpgs would include games such as V:SoH, DnL, DF, Hero's Journey

these games build upon and improve the genre as a whole by incorporating features unparalleled by their contemporaries

Its really simple. It means absolutely nothing. Almost every game box you find in a store would have that phrasing. Its just a marketing ploy. One of these days they are gonna re-release tetris on PC and call it a next generation game.

Well, when I heard it the first time, the first thing that popped into my head was that maybe the AI was drastically changed. But then the AI in WoW and EQ2 are pretty much the same old hat stuff. So, that's one of the things that confused me.

I do wish they would start making the monsters smarter though. I would consider that next gen.

World of warcraft isn't a next gen, its put up all the old good stuff and put it together in one game. SOE claims Everquest 2 is the first next gen mmo..but i don't know really.

Well, I seriously doubt those are next generation....V:SOH 100% isnt a next generation MMORPG....they said it will fix everything that is wrong with MMORPGs today, but nothing new I heard about. So thats out.

I would exclude DnL 100% cause that game seems to be going no where....and I will explain further why its not next generation material to me.

By the way, these are my personal opinions!

Hero's Journey I have no idea....I really am clueless what to expect from that game. All you mentioned were games that are highly hyped but havent included anything out of this world...in my opinion.

DF....thats a bit different....that game is including real time combat...something very new and experimental. In my opinion all next generation MMORPGs need to include this when comming out. I don't know if you will agree with me but real time combat seems to be a new concept being adopted by multiple mmorpgs in development.

I think these are what we could classify as next generation. Even Dungeons and Dragons if its true, its gameplay isn't point and click based.

I don't know how many would agree with me, but these to me are the true next generation MMORPGs....they aren't as hyped....for example The Chronicle and Roma Victor ..... but they are opening numerous possibilities. Graphics and hype don't make a game next generation.....its the experimental features they include that makes them next generation.

I will be honest...in my opinion EvE was a next generation MMORPG when it was released and then evolved....it included a lot of new experiemental feautures which I thought were great ideas.

What would you think makes a next generation MMORPG? I doubt its the hype alone, I also doubt its the graphics, or breaking a record for largest game. I think its for brining new experimental features and including them in a game which will work with them. DnL has what you sort of could call Experimental features, but that game I believe will fail....its only strength is its hype, and its promises of an Immersive world.....but there were some things which came to my mind which said...its not going to work out...just my personal opinion

hard to say as there isn't exactly a real idea of what is a "generation".

Some describe it as a time span, others as features etc.

For me the time span one makes more sense as i have not really see, in features, things that evolve from one thing to the other, only differnt styles that are not necessarily better than the previous.

As a time-span factor, yeah. EQ2 and WoW are third generation. First generation being UO, EQ, AC and Meridian 59 and second generation being DAoC, AO, EVE, Shadowbane, AC 2 etc.

The term is also used to indicate how many batch of finished products the game could use as reference. So first generation titles had nothing but muds, second generation could use the first gen titles as reference and so on.

    Purely subjective. A marketing ploy.

honestly, i don't think you have a clue what a next generation mmorpg game is. it has nothing to do with how good a game is, or how much you like a game ROFL.

a first generation game for example would be a game like eq1,uo,ao,daoc....

next generation or second generation would be games like wow,eq2,l2,coh...

third generation would be games like vanguard,aoc,df,ddo,hj....

the thing that sets them a part from one another is this....

first generation was obviously the first to intoduce us to mmorpg's, these were games people played for a good 5 years straight because once other companies realized what a huge money maker this genre is, it took them that long to come up with their finished product.

second generation games mainly improved from the first generation games and added some new aspects such as instancing, better quest development, better graphix...

third generation is still yet to be seen fully, but there are some really good ideas out there and a ton of games being developed. i dont think a third generation game has been released yet but when it does you will know it. image
