most "rpg's" out there arent really ROLE playing, like in D&D you have to use your imagination, and act out what is going on, you are ROLE playing, in mmorpgs now adays you just chat with your friends and grind >.< (dont flame, i know there is alot more but i am just making a point) you dont actually take up positions like kings and queens and knights and such and live out epic stories. i am looking for a game that does that.
The problem with wanting that out of a mmog is. They're set up so that if one person can do it, everyone in the game given the time can do it too. You never have someone who by whatever means becomes the king of all the land and everyone has to follow his orders. Instead you get something like the jedi in swg. Once one person figures it out everyone in the game starts to gind thier way to be king ( or queen :P ) And after a few months there are so many jedi or kings running around people feel cheated because the epic quest feeling is gone from the game.
The only way to really live the epic quest and become ruler of the land ( I know it's just an example ) are games like never winter night. Something not so masivly multiplayer, where you and some friends can play it alone and actualy win the game. In real life one person can become great, in a game everyone hsa to be able to or it's not fun.....I guess.
There are excptions to the rule but most of them involve being the head of some huge guild and pretty much giving up on real life.
Well if your looking for an actual DnD game try enworld forums players looking for players, I'ld link it but not sure how either this sight or enworld feels about that, so anyway just do a google on "enworld" and you should be their, thats one word not two. Depending on your age you might want check out White Wolf who run a player search for their own products, but they tend towards more mature themes then Wizards and their DnD stuff. MOO wise... your not realy gona find a true roleplaying game out thier, its just to hard to design a MOO with that kind of flexibility. When it comes to none-mmos ild say go for Fallout 2 or 1 excellent games in their own right, and some of the largest amount of flexibility out their. A large amount of stuff can be handled without combat which should give you an idea about the thought that went into making the world feel real. It is definatly a mature game though... If your looking for a laugh try out Kingdom of Loathing, not sure about how the servers are doing for that though... Finnaly if your desperate you can join a WOW Roleplaying Server, but, well its WOW and well I could keep going about how bad WOW is but ill spare you ;p.
If you like D&D, and are looking for serious roleplaying, there is no better game than Neverwinter Nights.
Granted, it is not as "massive" as WOW or Everquest, and graphics are aged now, but there are some very nice RP persistant worlds out there (some of them with very strict RP rules), with involved communities and plenty of dungeon masters to make the world a lot more dynamic than the standard MMORPG.
No monthly fee is a nice thing, as well
You want to rp with your friends... you can do that regardless of the MMO, even in WoW. You could try a game with RP servers and find people and guilds who are like minded and rp with them. You can play Forgotten Realms like someone suggested, or an rp type mud. Although you won't get the fancy graphics and other features you not only can, but will be encouraged, to role play. You could go to your local Wizards shop, comic shop, etc. and get involved in some real D&D games. There are a lot of sites online that have created their own mechanics to play D&D type games online and some even use UO shards to do it... a lot of these are really serious about the rp, too.
You have loads of options!
