I tried EVE last year, and I thought it was really cool, but after a few days, it seemed like I was going to spend a LOT of time mining rocks.
Why do people think mining ore is fun?

Greed
People mine because the rocks are the raw material of the game. You mine them, haul them, melt them down, you can sell em, or use em to build the weapons of war.
Organized mining is more fun than running missions.
With missions its just you vs the game's lame AI, basically you just beat the crap out of the NPC's, same missions over and over, save the damsel, kill this pirate, bring back this box, blah blah.
Mining anything can happen. You can get attacked by pirates, can have orethief try to take your stuff, its more risky than hiding in a mission, especially in a corp mining group who is at war, or in lowsec. Out in 0.0 its risky and very profitable.
Mining isn't fun, but it's not exactly boring either. I find it relaxing, like cleaning up a really dirty room or tidying up the kitchen. There are many people who made a career out of mining on EVE Online and without them the economy wouldn't be as good as it is today.
The game is 'ok'. Download the trial and try it. Play the ENTIRE trial before you decide to buy the game. If you find it fun after the full 14 day trial then go for it. Otherwise you probably will regreat buying it. People will tell you "it takes a month or two to get into the really fun stuff". That just isn't true. If the game is boring after the first 14 days for you then you will probably always find it boring.

Hoooya Ranma!
Have I got a kitchen for you!!!
And whats more, NO subscription costs or monthly fees!!!
I only mine cause i have a barge that can fill an entire jet can in 30 mins and am trying to get a battleship
that and i can get about 4mil a can
I was making an analogy. The mining process itself isn't exactly the most fun but the end result is satisfying.
I'm going to have to disagree a bit on the comment that said if you don't like the game during the 14-day trial, you probably won't like the game after a month. If you're the kind of person who enjoys PvP, you really can't be a viable PvP'er until after a month. Mining, however, and pretty much anything else except manufacturing can be adequately experienced in 14 days I would say.
I've played lots of EVE-online, and so far I've never found mining to be fun or interesting. I've mined maybe 5 hours in EVE-online in maybe 6 months of play. After 3 days of playing the trial version, I asked to join a player pirate corp. From then on, I've never mined. I've made my profits from either Mission running or PvP. Mission running might get as tedious at some times as mining and less profitable, but at least with mission running, you get to put ALL of your skillpoints towards combat skills...
There is one thing about EVE that keeps me coming back. (I've actually quit the game two times thinking never to return again.) The game is much deeper than the other MMORPGS on the market. I've played loads of DAoC and WoW. But EVE is more satisfying to play, as you never run out of new ship setups to test or skills to train. You can also not master the game in a month or two as you can in DAoC or WoW, when you reach your characters maximum level. I've always been a powergamer, and had loads of spare time, so I actually always hated the real time skill training of EVE, and I'm not even sure that I like it now, but it lends deapth to the game. And it is good for casual players, as your character will grow more powerful even when you're in school or at work.
Another thing that makes EVE much deeper, is the player controlled market and the fact that the game is so open ended. I will however stress the point, that you do need to have a lot of patience and be creative in the ways that you play the game, to enjoy it. I'll admit that the non-player content, such as the missions could be better, but they're constantly working to improve it.
If you're inclined to roleplaying, it might be very useful to read some of the fiction on the races, factions and stuff at www.eve-online.com before creating your character. Figure out an angle that you want to play in the game and create your character accordingly. Then join the efforts of that race and faction by instantly joining a player roleplaying corporation within the game and do battle with its enemies.
I've played Eve off and on for nearly two years. I come back to it as for the same reason the poster above me states: There can be a lot of depth to the game because of the skill-based system and the open-ended nature of it.
Some people may complain because they feel they should have a right to PvE or mine anywhere in the galaxy. Some people might scare you because of the griefers or PvP. Well I can tell you after nearly 2 years of play, I have NEVER even died in this game. How many games, even PvE based, can you say that about? It's ironic I know, that this should be the case in a PvP game. But if you think about it, it makes sense. In most games you are forced into combat, but in EVE you have that choice. Because it's designed as a simulator (in space), your fate is largely in your hands just like life.
Now just because I've never died doesn't mean my game suffers. I mine, I run missions, I do some trade routes. I've got a pretty sweet cruiser that I'm constantly improving, plus 6 other ships.
It's a solid game, it's beautiful, and very immersive.

I tried out the game 3 hrs ago and I think this game is really great. Not only are the people helpful, but the game mechanic is really nice.
I know I'm a newbie and still have lots of things to learn, but I think this game is great!
To say about Eve and what makes it imho the best MMO out there.
Eve has a freedom that is almost too much. You can do practicaly anything in the game. You have the standard PvP and PvE way of making money but then you have Instant Gate to Gate Bookmarking. Scouting, Spying, Stealing. Damn.. If you have a area of expertice you can probably sell the use of your skills. You can practical play the game just sitting in a station Buying and Selling.
I have played for over a year and haven't done everything I'd like to do yet. But what makes Eve something that maybe doesn't fitt everyones game is that it takes time. You basically have to be very dedicated to even be semi succesfull. And you can kiss your private life good bye. Lol (J/k) And it's also very repetative to make the isk (money). Mine this, Kill that, Ransom those and Sell everything.
But there is onething that draws me back to the game almost every day. The community. It's the greatest. You have ppl you care for, ppl you like, baffoons and idiot and ppl you hate. You can get help from almost every where you just have to look and don't spam. It's a game of patients. Eve is a game of feelings. Friendship / Hate. Fear / Superiority. Irritation / Reward. But in the end you feel good with it. And you are almost alway waiting in suspence for that next Patch or Upgrade, Or just for your next available ship.
That was my two pieces of Eight. So I Bow my head and wish you safe flying. (But not too safe)
I've been playing EVE for 7 months, and I can say a few things about it.
It's without question the best MMO in the market. It's not really a MMORPG. It's an "open world" where you can do "anything" you want, with it's logical consequences xD. I've been in 4 corps, and soon I'm changing again. This game never ends. You have a really good technical service (I've always had a response to all my petitions) and the community is quite good. There are some ·(/)!"·/( players, but not more than everywhere else xD and you'll be able to play without having more problems with'em that the really necessary ones xD
BTW, posting "is this game cool?" in a forum about... well... that game you're asking for... let me say, it's quite funny xD
"no, we're paying for a game that sucks a lot, please don't play! don't play!" xD
I would have to disagree that it's only an MMOG and not an MMORPG. Simply because everyone Role Plays in it. Since it's space and the future, everything you say that doesn't involve politics (actually it could even involve politics) would be role playing since it could and probably does happen.
I think the role playing feels more natural in a sci-fi than a fantasy MMO just because you don't feel you should use silly words like "thee" and "slay" and my favorite "over yon mountains there lay a dragon, which thou wilst be slaying thusly"
---------------------------------------------
I live to fight, and fight to live.
Role Play means getting "in character", not saying "silly things". I don't see many people in EVE getting IC. Have you heard someone saying "have you heard the last news? it seems like the problem with the government in..."
Would your character say "i'm going to eat" while piloting "AFK" "i'm going to do some missions of a level II agent" and those things? You may be in the future, but that's not role playing at all. At least from my humble point of view.
I'm going to write an example xD
I'm a Gallente citizen in the game (an Intaki). Just imagine that my character does not like Caldaris (in fact, I don't like'em, so does my character xD) then, I shouldn't join a Caldari corporation, right? He should be angry when he is forced to talk with one of those "dirty ultracapitalist freedom destroyers" (Gallente philosophy xD) but... in fact... If I tell a Caldari player "shut up you fascist pig" what will he reply? "WTF? Who are you to insult me? What have I done to you? I'll kill ya stupid gay thing", but not because he understood that it was my character who insulted him xD
I know i'm not understandable, my english is a mess, I do my best, sorry -_-U
I have never been a sci fi guy .. at all .. dont like star trek or any of those programs ..
I was offered EVE beta test key when it first came out and didnt bother.
After years of AC / AC2 / DAOC / WOW and more of hte same ole game with different graphics I gave EVE a try. Well so far I like it a lot. Totally different than anything I am used too. Friendly to those who play hard (lots of money for uber items) and for those of us with external lives (real time leveling).
Its different .. its not 100% more strategy than the standard jump run shoot be quick games that I have always played.
Pretty sweet game all in all.
So if you find yourself saying .. there is nothing out there .. EVE is as its something different .. go through the tutorial . .meet some guys in game . and enjoy.
dont u dare start playing MMORPG unless u want to be hooked
