Good experience, im still relatively new and there is so much to take in, like a gazillion things to take in and I do not understand much of it. I was able to figure out how to become a begger and join the begging school....gotta get me some old fashioned Staff Fighting techniques mastered.
I dunno how long I can play trying to learn so much in so short amount of time though. Even though my first MMO was Asheron's Call I am a product of the themepark school of MMO play. Will take me along time (or never) to get used to this game but it def has tons of pontential.
I am almost crazy certain guild play and group play is way more important to getting used to the game and as such this might be the straw that breaks the game for me. Anyone else who plays late at night on the East Coast want to group up and learn the game together?

The first time i started playing the game i didnt even make it thru the tutorial..
But then i came back and told myself : Theres got to be more to this game.
And there is!
Ive been playing for almost a month but im still learning new stuff. The game is super addictive and if you can look past the glitches i think its one of the best on the market(for me). They way they force you to interact with other players is brilliant and bothb competitive and cooperative playstyle is supported.
Also there are small things like, theres and instance where one of the Bosses can hire players to help him defeat the players running the instance (IKR!).
Once you figure out what you want to do and what you have to do in order to advance in the way you want, the game becomes much more of a world than a game( your life skills, activites, adventures), and the rest of the playerbase adds just enough randomess to make it that much more enjoyable.
Hmmmm sounds intresting,il be giving this game a try now (downloading as i post)
Can you guys give me some information about the pvp? is it open? can i get rewards for pvping? can i pk?(get negative karma).......
Basically clicking away text windows ruins every MMO, try to have fun instead of rushing things. Without story and lore all there is left is a bunch of mechanics.

Pvp is open but randomly killing ppl will get you to jail fast.
Certain (criminal) activites lift these restrictions so if you attack a criminal you dont get penalized. The best yielding activites all involve PVP on some level but the key most of the time is to cooperate with friends and guildies.
The different schools also have their own missions like spying and patrolling aganist spies, stealing treasure from each other etc. Same for guilds u can posess territory(with ur own castle) or challenge a guild for it (by declaring war) and guilds take these very seriously . You can ally urself with other guilds or have enemies and you can try to make their lives harder by attacking their escort caravans etc.
Also PVE and PVP are not separeted as much as in other games(like i mentioned above) , since the best gear(hell any proper gear) is player crafted but certain items come from instances(flying skills, workshop rare material), and it can all be used in PV.
Theres a lot of intrigue in the game fe. you can make some fake items and try to scam ppl.
Anyway really the best part is that both PVP and PVP requires cooperation between players and the whole game is about player interactions. Theres not a lot of griefing as 99% of the playerbase is in guilds, and ppl watch out for each other.
You might get attacked over gathering spots tho.
Oh yeah as for rewards in pvp :
You dont get rewarded for killing ppl, u get rewarded for accomplishing goals which usually involve killing ppl.
I agree with the OP. Because of the learning curve, the game gets better the longer you play. I have no doubt people dropped out before experiencing what the game truly had in store for them. Often companies will just put out the most simple MMORPG possible, and though that may get a lot of players into the game at first, there is very little reason for them to conintue playing. This game is the exact opposite. In the very beginning, there is just so much there. It has a longer lasting value.
There are things I like about the game, and things I don't like (if you read my posts here you would know the things I don't like), but overall it's a good game.
That sounds pretty cool
not sure what my issue is.. i finished the first part of the quest.. did the first instance.. unlocked all my schools weapon sets, got a couple flying skills, started a crafting prof, did some spy missions, did some caravan escorts, did some PVP... just cannot get into the game at all it just is not very fun for me which is odd because I love martial arts and the whole asian theme. I joined a decently sized guild as well but i dunno just not enjoying myself.
I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. If I buy a candy bar at a store, oftentimes, I will drop it... so that it achieves its maximum flavor potential. --Mitch Hedberg
I kinda felt you were have some issue I was gonna pm you the other day and suggest doing gossip (miricle encounter?) quest. I haven't did any, but the mystery and getting npcs to like you seems pretty cool.
Much props Areo for giving it a honest play. Hope you find something to hang around.
think for me my main issue is the combat.. i just could not find a combination i found enjoyable. Even with several nice movement skills combat just isn't for me in this game I guess.. not to mention the horrible quest translations don't help much either heh... oh well not every game appeals to everyone this one just isn't for me I suppose:(

I'd say keep trying Aero, it took two weeks for the game to hook me. I think the kicker was having a friend play with me though, we logged in a week ago and ran a five hour play session. We both were playing up until yesterday when we decided the new server was were we wanted to be. I certainly understand the issue with the combat, I was Shaolin and hated all three sets. I jumped onto the wiki to get an idea of which school I want for the 10th, something with a mix of good single target, aoe, and ranged ... so I'll go Wanderer's. I also had to a take a strong look at what i've been missing in the game, which is pvp .... I avoided it except for a few duels and patrol missions. I didn't know instances, script stealing, escorts, crafting , school wars , and I didn't find a guild. The openness still managed to hook me though. My original complaint was that combat and movement was clunky , I wouldn't make that complaint now. It was definetly a two front issue, one I lacked the understanding of the system and two I didn't have the right skills. I still don't have all the flying skills I need for combat, nor a school which was comfortable but I atleast got a glimpse of the door starting to open up. I'd keep it up .. if yah need some people to play with shoot me a PM, I have three buddies who are going to be rolling on the new server we'd be happy to show you the ropes ( as well as newbs can) in the mean time.
well in my time over the past couple weeks and to include the past beta I played before i purchased the VIP i tried 3 differn't schools overall. I have had help from several people in my guild and people from these forums... i'd consider trying wanderer but don't know if i can suffer myself through all the starter stuff for a 4th time... really want to like this game as it is differn't and has some very interesting mechanics but not sure if it will ever "click" for me.

I'll shoot you our ventrilo information, feel free to drop in whenever yah like. You've given it a good shot, that's certain, I felt the same way you did before I got hooked. On the 10th apparently they are releasing a 4th skill set for each school ( ? I was told this in game so not sure if it's true ). They are also releasing the meridian system which I'm still confused about, it's been explained to me that its a secondary progression but will make help combat feel more fluid threw various skill buffs.. such as cooldown reductions for example.
i'm currently CB testing 3 other games atm... but ill probably give it another shot after the official release as I still have over a month of VIP left from the deluxe thing

Actually he shouldn't keep trying, as that should only be suggested to the people who haven't really experienced much of the game. I mean sure, with the learning curve many people give up without seeing if they like the game or not; however, he isn't one of those people. For him, it would seem the game itself isn't good enough. I would say it's best he quit now then have people continually encourage him to stick it out... that's not enjoyment.
If it isn't clear already (based on my posts I have made so far), I am not in anyway a fanboy of this game. I play it, and I like it. But everyone likes different things. People here should learn to accept that, and lower the fanboism just a tad. I mean I like the game but get attacked for anything I mention that I don't like.
Overall, as I pointed out in this thread already. This is a very deep game with a high learning curve, but it has lasting enjoyment for people who like this sort of thing.
on hardest mode each boss summon players
Aerowyn I think You have to try all:P I have played all and while I can withstand gameplay of all clans, most fun I have with Shaolin and WV, while my friend only like sholars, other tang and RG et etc
i m waiting a long time for a game like this. not especially this one, but something like this.
i love eve, despite i dont like sci-fi games, and i m waiting much time to have a fantasy version of it. thats why i am playing AoW, but as aerowyn said, i cant get into, because of the combat mostly. i ll keep playing to find out more. i think they are doing a huge effort with this.
if you figure out a way to find the combat fun let me know because I'm at a loss

go start a fight.
done that.. done PVP.. hasn't changed how I feel about the system...
think i may just delete and start over one more time and try wanderer

I wouldn't sweat it. Though some classes seem to excel in ranged combat and some don't and all that jazz so I guess it's a matter of finding the class that has teh right combo of skills you like to play with. It's a little harder to discern what the strenghts and weaknesses of teh classes are since they aren't the more western traditional classes like warrior (tank), thief (dps, stealth), ranger (ranged),..etc. Though I feel you on the starting over part. Some games have some fun starting areas, but AoW's seem more like a chore that you have to go through until you can pick your school.
If it's just simply the combat in general, well then I don't think any class will improve it for you. I don't think the combat is as responsive as I would like, but I don't neccasarily consider it clunky either. The way I see it though, if it's not repsonsive for me, then it probably isn't for the guy I'm fighting either. So it's just a matter of who is used to the combat as well as their gear, inner level, and skill. Maybe not in that order, but I think they all play their part in the overall combat and deciding who will walk away from the fight. For something that's F2P, I can live with that.

so far i have tried wudang, shaolin, and emei.. haven't cared for any.. going to give one more school a shot before i just write the game off for now.. considering WV or Tangmen...

Wanderer's Valley All day..
Moxio..
PM before you report at least or you could just block.
Regarding the combat, I also found it clunky and off-putting at first. What helped me get past my initial impression was to first change the controls to suit my play-style (remap parry to shift and right-click to control direction) and then simply to start looking at Wushu’s combat in juxtaposition to EVE's point-and-click mechanics.
I've always loved EVE's player-driven economy, skill progression system, and political drama. But, I really didn’t like how disconnected I felt to my avatar, and I couldn't stand the whole drop-down menu combat mechanics. Age of Wushu seemed to solve a lot of these problems by grounding my avatar, giving me WASD movement, and crafting a super-immersive world to explore. So, when I had to engage in combat, I stopped trying to compare it to super-fluid action games and instead tried comparing it to the combat in EVE. The aspects of EVE’s combat that I did like were the rock-paper-scissors approach in choosing the right fittings, deciding which skills were needed when, and making sure I had allies around when necessary. I think Age of Wushu actually does a really good job of this. The feint and parry system really works when mastered, and 3 low level players can take on a high-level player with the right CC tactics.
So, instead of approaching every fight like I needed to out-maneuver and out-pace my opponent, I started trying to just out-play them. Feinting when they thrown up a block, attacking when they go for a feint, etc. What I found was that my frustration with lag and general clunkyness started subsiding the more I focused on those aspects. Then, once those were mastered, I actually found that the game was more fluid than I initially gave it credit for.
Just the other day I had a fight as a patrol that played out like a cinematic in a kung-fu flick. I was chasing a spy, which I had gotten down to super low-health, when we reach what I thought was a dead-end surrounded by tall buildings. He finds a tree in the corner, leaps off its branch and manages to make it to the rooftop. I thought I’d lost him, but I scramble up the tree as well and we continue the chase on rooftop, jumping from roof to roof. Finally I get close enough that just as he’s making a leap across two roofs I throw a dagger into his back and finish him off. It was pretty awesome.
I’m not saying the combat is the greatest thing out there, and if combat is your main priority you may want to wait for a game like Blade & Soul, but, if you are looking for a good sandbox, I think the combat in Wushu is plenty good once you accept it for what it is. I know that nobody wants to hear that they need to change their perspective in order to enjoy a game. But, if sandbox is your bag, it may just be worth troubling yourself to learn how to enjoy AoW. It's not like there are a lot of alternatives.

The only tip I would have for people starting out (I'm new as well BTW), is PvP as soon as possible. Duel people! Seriously, because newbies fighting newbies gives you a really good feel for the combat, in a way PvE cannot do. People think: "I'm going to get more powerful than try dueling sometime"... bad idea, no really it's bad.
