Concern about poor graphics

ahsudburyahsudbury Member Posts: 29

Hello everyone,

Well I heard about RV for the first time today and spent 3 hours reading anything and everything I can about it.  As someone said in another post, I am a 26-year-old gamer who cut his teeth on text based MUDs before moving to UO, Dark Age of Camelot (pvp server) and eventually Eve Online.  In the past year I played Guild Wars with limited satisfaction and I am trolling around waiting for the next great game.

I've been particularly interested in Darkfall and now after reading about RV, I am especially excited.  My one major concern, however, and the concern of many of my guildmates who I've told about the game, is the screen shots seem to depict unusually poor graphics.  I don't mean this to be a complaint, or to talk shit about the game, but more of a question and/or concern.  After playing Eve Online for 2 years I am used to stunning visuals and cutting-edge graphics.

So if anyone can address this concern, I would greatly appreciate it.  I am a huge fan of the open, unrestricted pvp scheme as well as skill-based advancement.  I am also sick of ho-hum standard fantasy MMORPGs.  That is what turned me on to Eve Online and now I am fairly excited about RV.  I would like to know what people have heard about developer intention to improve the look of the game, though.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

    Okay,

I figured this topic must have been brought up already and I found my answers from http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion.cfm/setstart/21/loadthread/49675/loadforum/595/loadclass/203 . . .

My concerns are allayed, I guess once the game is approaching release next year it will look more polished.  Since my B.A. is in history, and I have a particular love of Roman history, along with a true love of harsh MMORPGs (like Eve Online), I am eagerly anticipating this game . . .

I love EVE to death...but there's a reason that it can easily have stunning graphics: There's no ground! This means no trees, no bushes, no graphics... The skybox is static, you don't see anything more than 200k (?) away, and it's a pretty damn big game.

Still love it to death though.

EQ2 and Dark Age of Camelot (expansions) have very nice graphics.  Especially EQ2, which I have never played.  Guild Wars also has great graphics.  I just hope that RV matches them in this regard, a great game with great content would only be made far better if it is beautiful to look at, too!

Well, 3 years ago they had the game looking LIKE THIS with all the effects turned on. Now, 3 years later, we have no idea what it will look like when all the effects are turned on. ;)

I don't care what it looks like so long as it plays well. I first played the old X-Com games about 10 years ago and still have UFO and Apocalypse on my hard drive, they've never been great to look at but always been fun to play. Good graphics are nice to have but a distant second to gameplay imo.

I believe the graphics are far, far better than those old screenshots. You won't be disappointed. I think there are a couple of things that are going to be slightly turned down sometimes, in order to facilitate large battles, but the detail is there.

BillTanner: I'm not so sure you should be revealing that... : =P However paradoxal it may seem.

The graphics in the pictures are set to low for testing purposes they are going to bring out more detailed screenshots from ingame later.

It's an interesting point about EVE having just stars, planets, space & space ships does allow for a lot of focus on graphics. With RV you will see massive battles and some quite spectacular features and I think it's worth a trade off with graphics to have such an immense game experience.

I cant say that im not to fussed about the graphics but they have to be at least viewable, its the gameplay guys that is what is so good about this game.
