If only that game came with a damn instruction book! I think I spent most of the first several months I played that game doing nothing but mining, because I didnt know crap else to do or how to do it lol.

I do, there I was ... freshly created character Iczer-One ... standing in Trinsic at the bank, not even 5 minutes old and some guy opened up a trade window with me and dropped several bags and chests into my inventory. "Here, I am quitting the game after a year ... take this." He gave me a ton of weapons, armor, reagents and gold. I grabbed whatever I thought was the coolest looking weapon in there, a halabard, and ran out into the nearby woods to slay whatever I could find. I saw a Hind standing there .. went into attack mode and engaged. *CRACK* the hally landed and did a sliver of damage .... "Whahhauuhh" *wierd hind sound* ... and 1/2 my health was gone .... "Whahhauuhh" *wierd hind sound again* ........ oooOOooOoOOoOOOooooO

5 years later I finally hung up my hat on UO, due to lack of friends playing, and headed off for Shadowbane. That was 5 of the best mmo years of my life that all started with getting faceraped by a Hind.

This quote makes me think of those great days of old.
Anyway, i remember dying to an orc mage about 10 minutes after logging into my shard. I also remember the 30 minute wandering around/walk figuring how the hell to get rezzed, and i also remember trying to get back to my corpse and ending up halfway across the map, where i saw a cave like entrance. I thought to myself "oooh!! look!! a cave!". I entered Destard and got pwnt by "a Dragon".
Since that moment UO has and will always be by FAR my favorite mmorpg.
Clicking on a rock over and over and over again was fun.
UO was before any of this other junk that is out there. It was brand new idea and was amazing to many of us that what we actually did in a game ment something to someone else. That had never before been realized in that large of a magnitude so it was fun.
When I first started I was in awe that I was actually playing a video game (my favorite hobby) with someone else. That I could do stuff for them and to them and visa versa.
After fighting my first hind, I left them alone because the noise they made was irritating. I think my first battle that I ran from was against some cat in Skara Brae, which probably looked rather pathetic to the locals.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

Lol, I remember, but sort of a different way.
Back then I played Ultima. The *real* Ultima. The RPG series. I had no idea what a MMO is or an Online Game of any sorts, when a friend showed me UO and let me play a bit.
Afterwards I thought:
WHAT THE FUCK?!
Ok, in Ultima the RPG series I can be the goddamn Avatar, saving the world, setting new standards of ethics, have the most epic stories in games EVER.... while in Ultima the MMO I can hack a rock. Or sell shoes. Or try to kill a frigging deer.

Yeah I remember getting killed by some little rabbit or something. Asking around how the heck I'm supposed to be able to slay a bunny rabbit I was told I needed to chop wood to get strong enough to kill a rabbit.
I thought that was ridiculous so I quit. A year or two later Everquest came out. There I struggled to kill a big rat... but I DID kill the big rat. And without having to chop wood for hours first! I was sold at that point. Never looked back at UO.
I understand your point, but in my opinion UO was "realistic" in its own special way. The chopping wood part would raise the skill "Lumberjacking" which in turn would raise its defaul Stat "Strength" which would make you character stronger with each point of strength you had. Lumberjacking would also make you hit harder with Axes or was it miss less, i dont remember. :P
Yes, because I was making useful things that were in demand with my smith, had vendors etc... I also had the random PK come try to take my ore/ingots.... When colored ingots came out, decked my smith out in all GM valorite, because it was fun to see people want to kill me for it, and no one was ever able to kill me and take it... Crafting/housing/vendors as a package from UO have not been matched yet imo.
SWG had a good combo of it, but it also had a lot of the people from UO put it into place, also Vanguard had some good crafting and harvesting.
I don't know if "realistic" is the term that I connect with this idea...

I don't remember exactly what my first UO critter fight was, but my first attempt at a character suffered an economic near-death experience ... I couldn't craft enough bandages to cover the number I would use in gathering materials for the next batch. I was down to catching fish to sell for 1 coin apiece for an hour in order to save up enough to go looking for sheep to shear.
I don't particularly want to go through that particular experience again, but the fact that I did go through it has primed my emotions to appreciate every coin and credit I have picked up in every game I have played since.
I think the deer won THAT fight. The first time.

Haha, yes I do. Also remember the first time I wandered too far from the moonglow moongate and found myself lost in the graveyard... not a good time.
Ironic that this thread came up. I just joined this site to try and find a new MMO similar to UO. If anybody can suggest one, I just started a thread here.
So what if it is "realistic". It wasn't fun. EQ was a much better game. I don't play games to be realistic. The real world is realistic enough.
wow .. really? Repeated boring (to me) action can become fun just because it is for "making useful things"? I wonder if that can be applied to flipping burgers at McDonald's. Burgers are pretty "useful".
