Early SWG was my favorite MMO ever, but after the NGE it deserved to be shut down.
This. ^^ The SWG that closed down prior to the TOR launch was not the one most people liked. That game had been dead for years. So to most, it was no big loss that the NGE was put down, finally.
Originally posted by Aerowyn easily SWG.. they just needed to roll back before NGE and polish some things up, i'd probably still be playing if they did that
I'm gonna vote for Earth and Beyond as well since it was MMO gateway drug and it ended just as I was really getting into it. I'll give an honorable mention to Matrix Online, too. It was pretty rough all around but some of the core concepts of reactive combat, loading builds on the fly, and live events/storyline tie-in were really advanced for the time. In fact, I think had the F2P craze come along a few years earlier, a number of the games on the list might still be around in some form. Whether they'd still be worth playing today, well... that's another question.

Word. I also think the same about Tabula Rasa.

i remember actually enjoying tabula rasa a good bit.. i remember it having a more dynamic feel to the game especially for the time it came out
I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. If I buy a candy bar at a store, oftentimes, I will drop it... so that it achieves its maximum flavor potential. --Mitch Hedberg

i'd support shadowbane with a graphical engine overhaul.. i remember even when the game was relatively new it looked pretty bad in the graphics department..

I'd definatley agree it would need a graphics and control scheme overhaul. I played SB about a year ago with some folks who were working on building an emulator of it and couldnt stand the controls.
We all know that the shut down of SWG was not planned there is now way they would have worked on all of those updates just to release them towards the end of the game. It was George Lucas being dumb as usual and he ruined a great game twice. Sony revolutionized the game industry with SWG, and it was closed down for unfair reasons, and I would pay for this game to return. I hope Disney can fix all the mistakes Lucas made.

What makes you think any of these games should not have been shut down? In business if you are not making money to pay the bills you will not keep open. So you can keep saying how good these games were however if they were that good would they have shut down? No.
I voted City of heros. I loved Shadowbane and wish it was still going but it had issues. Lag was a major one in big battles. The PvP was great tho. The reason I voted City of Heros(I played City of Villains more) was that ending it seemed premature. So it fit - which MMO should not have been shut down.
I could have said SWG, but since it would have needed so much revision to get back to being worthwhile (such as rolling it back pre-NCU), I had to go with Tabula Rasa. It had lots of problems to be sure, but it's one thing to fix an incomplete game and another one to pretend that a complete game never had half of it's expansions.
I would like to get my hands on Tabula Rasa and The Chronicals of Spellborn for some redesign.
Real potential in those two.
And SWG before it had the [JEDI] button. I never played it back then but it's pretty obvious that the original mechanic (having to learn 5 classes to master and not knowing exactly which 5) really made becoming a Jedi something special. As it should be.
SWG actually had a decent dedicated playerbase before it shut down. The community was still intact as well as its space simulator and player housing. There were groups, events, pvp, crafting, and plenty of progression still left in the game, despite being long past the NGE change.
The only reason they closed was to try and force the population to TOR. We all saw how that turned out.

That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
it was shut down right before its release i believe.

Earth & Beyond was the only game on the list that I was still playing when they shut it down, so that got my vote.
