Well I know it isn't really an MMORPG ( I think Anet called it a CORPG), but I voted for Guild Wars. For me, the very fact that it ISN'T an MMORPG in the traditional sense is what makes it such a breath of fresh air. The graphics are awesome, the UI is very slick, and the PvP is the best in any RPG I've ever played.
I was really surprised the first time I figured out that I could interrupt people with my ranger; the whole concept of using your reflexes (i.e. skill) in an online game was something I had never seen before. Not only that, but when you create a build every one of your eight skills actually matters.
Despite the fact that it's heavily instanced, I have had more interaction with other players in this game than in almost any other game I have ever played, and I played the original Asheron's Call for probably about 3 years.
This is largely due to being able to easily communicate via TS, but the PvP in this game actually gives you a reason to USE a voicechat program, as well as to organize yourselves into guilds, because it's actually really helpful to work together as a team in order to be competitve in PvP.
The fact that the game has henchies is also really nice, as it allows you to "solo" with any character at any level, although generally it's better (although not always) to play with a group.
Mostly though, I think I really liked this game because it's fun. It's really more of an action game than an RPG, at least IMO, so comparing it to something like Diablo is pretty fair. Still, this is one of those games that is more about kicking ass and taking names than grinding for thousands of hours in order to become Uber so that you can own everyone (if there's even PvP in the game), which just doesn't make sense to me.
The way I see it, if you're going to invest hundreds of hours in your life into a video game, it should at least be one that you really enjoy.
i would have to agree with gameloading. World of Warcraft is my favorites. First of all, i love the graphics style. The Amount of custopmization is great, and simple, and there re loads of way to customize your characters look (through the huge amount of gear) The pvp is alot of fun because, fist there is alot of action, second, it takes some skill so you cn feel urself getting better as you play more, and third it just feels good when you gank the level *9 person when you like 4 levels lower.
Am I ever wrong??
All the information you need is here
Anyone notice "other" has more votes then eve :P
I voted WoW but only because even afte a year I still have alot of fun playing it. The original swg was probably a better game but soe changed it and imo ruined it.
Well so far no-one voted matrix online.

Silk Road Online only because its my flavor of the month MMO. It's great for a free game and being in a beta but there are still too many missing content features for me to really consider it good. All the MMOs I've played have failed so hard in one aspect that I'm equally unimpressed with them all. So whatever my current MMO is is my favorite. Although I do have the most fond memories of pre-trammel UO.
WoW and Guild Wars are both very good games, in the end my vote JUST tipped to WoW (mainly because it's a much longer and more involving experience).
Both have excellent graphics, lots of variety in character skills (and great skill/levelling systems too), numerous combat tactics and strategies, brilliant quest driven storylines (though GWs is shortish and one-dimensional compared to WoW's), classes that are fun to play, ease of grouping in both cases, compelling world (for WoW particularly), good atmosphere (also particularly for WoW, I'm not talking community here, just game world atmosphere, ie it feels like a world).
All these go together to make the FUN FUN FUN to play...and isn't that what a game is for! The thing is if you really want to go in depth (and min/max and stuff) then you can certainly do that in these games too, so they're flexible for different types of players, another brilliant recommendation for them.
(PS. Oh...and I'm looking forward to seeing even ONE of the EVE voters actually explain WHY EVE is so good, and worth second spot in the votes...try to leave scamming and ganking out of your reasons though, they're probably not good recommendations. OK, that was nasty and trollish, but honestly they can jump in every OTHER thread, but can't explain it in a straight-out request one like this...and anyway, none of them would have read this far in such a WoW-loving-baby post...hehe )
MMO's nowadays let me down. Was a big fan of Gw but i got bored of that game i guess. Pvp is great and all but i got bored with that in there too. Maybe its the fact of not being able to meet up with someone outside of a town/fort. With Wow theres not much to do after 60 except make a new different character and/or pvp.
In my honest opinion i would go back to the game that made me a mmo fanboy.... Asheron's Call...
I loved it to death and still do but ever since decal and other hackers/macroers it was pointless to play the game since the dev suited the needs of people who didn't lvl or play the characters they played instead used a computer named el tank. Made it hell to try to lvl normally and especially when you go to a good dungeon it would be full of 60 people macroing and about 5 people actually playing .. Im done with history 101 :P but thats my 2 cents
The biggest anticipation for a mmo would possibly be Dark and Light and Rf Online (looks good to me :P )

COH, By far. Most of my time spent in MMO's was with Ultima. Ultima was a great game and really I have seen no other like it. The things that I did not like from UO such as; Picking up tiny little items, running around on a slow horse to get from point a to b, and having to clean your bankbox and house all the time made it feel more like a chore than a game.
The only game so far to get rid of the Online Chore feel is COH/COV. Some may view these games as easy silly MMO's, but when you look deeper you will discover a brilliant action packed game.
Every other fantasy game to come out still suffers from horrid travel times, and the feeling that you are a virtual maid/collector. If I wanted to work online I would get a job in Web design. COH revolutionaized the way we think about MMo's from their amazing character customization to the fact that the only items you get are taken automatically. No more Kill/click/click/click/click.
I think the reason people get bored with MMo's is not because of lack of content, or lack of uber gear but it's more of a feeling that you are doing work, and only get to have a little fun after working at the little mondain things.
Another game that I think will make a leap in the MMO genre is Tabula Rasa.
IMO it's DAOC. My 2nd Runner up would be EVE.
Why:
DAOC has it all. Solid PVP and excelent PVP as well. Great questing system and a solid Crafting system. Has player housing that doesn't intrude on the game world (remember the urban sprawl of UO all too well). Allows players to duel if they so desire but doesn't allow griefing in the PVE areas.
Its one of the most stable MMORPG's out there.
It's survived the ultimate test: Time
It's got solid graphics which recently received a major overhaul.
It's frienly to the casual player and powergamer alike. Both can have fun in it.
I had left DAOC 2 years ago to play other titles and recently came back. EVERY single issue I had with the game has been adressed in that time. It is truely an awesome title now.
My next runner up is EVE. It would be #1 in my book but there are too many aspects of the game that are repetitive and mind-numbingly boring to me.
SWG used to be my #1 but for obvious reasons they no longer make the list.
Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.

Still in: A couple Betas
I'm not sure if this is as much a reply as it is a new question.
Where can I go to find out more about these games. I mean the screenshots are great and the summary given is cool, but I want to know more about how the game is played. For example, what are the controls like (and yes I know they can be modified in game), and how would each character "level up"? These are the ?'s I have when getting into a new game.
I'm really new at this online gaming. The first and only MMORPG I got into was/is Star Wars Galaxies, and to tell the truth with all the changes they have made I'm looking at getting into another game, I just don't know how to go about it.
Thanks,
Streetz13
First: Elnator - I greatly agree with you on your post about Dark Ages of Camelot. I played that game a couple months after it's first release (began in... December '02 I believe was the year it came out), and spent a year and a half on it - the longest period of time I've spent on a single MMORPG. Since then, I've found myself jumping around from one MMORPG to another, simply learning everything (but always leaving with an empty feeling). I returned to DAOC with the release of Catacombs, and have to say that I was hugely impressed. I made a Heretic and played from levels 1-25 in the first weekend alone. The instance dungeons were great, pvp was still as fun as ever... I loved every aspect of it. However, I dropped the game shortly after due to low server populations. I'm back on it now for the 2 week trial version to see how the numbers are, and to re-consider picking it up once more. I'm currently on the Gareth server (a server dedicated to the classic rules, which I love), playing a cleric named Gariland. He's still only around level ten, but is a full healer with a few points thrown into enhancements. If you're ever on there, send me a tell and we'll hook up.
Second: Streetz13 - You can find a great deal of information about each game by checking out the individual links on their respective 'Links' section. Or, feel free to browse the forums for that particular game - you can generally find a lot of what you're looking for there as well. If you need anymore help, just let me know - I'm definetly a seasoned vet at MMORPGs now, with 18 under my belt.
Eve Online because of the PvP. I played WOW and was shocked with what they call PvP there. You die respawn die respawn but what for? You don't really loose much by dying at all.
In eve online combate i get an adrenaline rush because i have hella lot to loose but in WoW combate i just get that "i don't care" feeling.
Hi Hadz.
I'll take up that offer.
Eve is my best, but only just,,,
WoW is very enjoyable, and the PvE Quest series is awesome fun, with each race basically having a different experience.
Unfortunately, its what i would expect in a single player game... although i LOVE that WoW is multiplayer, i play with my GF as a duo team all the time... she actually plays more than me, but our "duo" team only plays together. But there is no lasting impression to be made. I cant found a city, build an outpost, be part of a player kingdom and conquer/defend/develop our own lands... Which sucks.
Guild Wars - it has the MOST enjoyable PvP combat. the Arenas, limited skills, teamwork is fantastic. Pity the rest of the game lets it down. Instances... shudder...
Eve Online - this is what i want from an MMO game. Players creating/affecting the world. Going out and conquering regions, making stations and outposts, player defence fleets and industry etc... The politics and "virtual world" of eve-online is what keeps me coming back all the time. The gameplay of ship setup and highly complex rock-paper-scissons where nothing is "uber" is also what i love. The classless/level-less development of a character is also what grabs me.
A combination of the three would be perfect for me... But for the best MMORPG currently, Eve gets the vote from me as it is the game that best reflects RP (playing a role you choose yourself, not being railroaded into what the devs want you to be) and what i feel a MMOG should be (massive amounts of players affecting each other and the world).
edit: OK. Big thing. levels are a true horror - the fact that a lvl 1 can be killed by anything, and a level 60 is basically untouchable except by another high level... 100 lvl1s will not even scratch a lvl60. The scaling of power is just plain WRONG. I like in eve that the more character skills you learn, the more OPTIONS you have, and the more things you can use. But a battleship and frigate are DIFFERENT, both are better/worse in different situations. Nothing is "one size fits all".
