I say Vanguard is the closest thing to what your looking for.
  • MMOman101MMOman101 Member UncommonPosts: 1,787

    Vanguard

    Or

    Rift

“It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”

What your describing sounds like Rift or LOTRO. Both great games that have been around long enough to nave a ton of pve content. I would suggest Rift for you. Give it a try I think you will like it.

I'd have to suggest EQ2 or Age of Conan. You can try both as a free player and upgrade to a sub if you like them.

OK, leaning towards EQ2, Rift or LOTRO.  Couple of questions:

    1)  In Rift, can you get away with just playing DPS?  Or because of the soul system, are you pushed to also play healer and tank?

    2)  Does LOTRO have an active community?

    Thanks for all the help!

Rift you can play 100% DPS if you want and have a lot of differn't options just in the dps department.. with the soul system it's actually easier to be just dps as with people having access to more roles you usually have players with multiple roles allowing you to stay dps if that's what you like

Old fart mmorpgs are the best. As it currently stands these are the ones you should be keeping your eyes on.

    1. EQ2

    2. EQ

    3. Vanguard

    4. Anarchy Online

These games are just purely great mmorpgs without the modern bullcrap.I wouldnt recommend Rift as its modernized in a bad way in my opinion.

i was thinking about AO ,but then what they have done to it i would not even recommend it to my worst enemies.

The base game is still there, sure but what have they built around is worse than Aeria games can ever dream of.

Well if your looking for something a bit different from the other suggestions, you could try Wakfu (though graphics and context may not be to your liking), its got a nice chilled turn based game play system. OR Atlantica Online.

Pretty much those 3 what comes to mind indeed, based on your list.

(skipped the Rift question because I'm not that familiar with the game)

LotRO has a decent community on most servers, and on some it's even better. There's the 6 years anniversary festival happening now, so it could be a bit deceiving if you jump in and select a server these days (lots of players are online during festivals :) )

Since your US I'd suggest to check upon Brandywine or Landroval, those have great player numbers even the off-festival days.

    • Astral Projection

And its bad,its so bad that i dont have even words for it.

its pure pay to win cash shop, buy tokens ,race changes etc for real cash and sell for game credits and then also sub is there too,its sad.

LotRO is a great game for us older gamers where we like a more relaxed and pleasant experience.
  • TheDarkrayneTheDarkrayne Member EpicPosts: 5,297

I wouldn't reccomend AoC.. because if you don't want to press extra buttons for movement then the combos in that game will do your head in.

Sub for LOTRO, EQ2 or Vanguard could be good. EQ2 would be my pick of them. I was a big player of LOTRO until it went FTP and felt it totally changed the game, in a bad way (you might still like it though). You can also give them all a really good try before deciding if they are right for you, which is great.. but subbing is always the best option those games in the end.

Aion may be worth a look and has probably the best FTP model of any proper MMO imo. Might not be your thing though, depends what type of fantasy you prefer. Free to play 'properly' though so it couldn't hurt. I know you want a sub game.. but if you like it, it's the best, or one of the best, FTP models you can find. Can't remember if there's a sub option for extra bonuses.. but it doesn't matter because you really can play it properly without spending anything if you don't want to.

FF:XIV Reborn may be something you'll like... but it's not out yet and the lasting appeal isn't certain yet.

Rift is a good option, but if you've just come from WoW I think you'll quickly get burnt out on Rift. It is essentially exactly the same thing; you have the same mindset and make the same kind of decisions about what you're going to do and why. That might be what you want though. I currently play both Rift and WoW.. so I'm not biased.. but I wouldn't jump from one to the other because, really, they are the same kind of experience. If I get fed up with one of them, I get fed up with both of them.

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

    I'd vote:

    RIFT

    or

    LOTRO

EQ2 has alot of content... that NOBODY does. and its a poorly designed game. basically youll never get a group until max level and then run the same content over and over. and over. and if you do run dungeons it will be a mindless AE mess. just not a fun game. and the skill bloat is hysterically dumb. hmmm and the animations and game engine need to die in a fire and be forgotten from history. AI and boss mechanics are holy shit lame. I'd definitely play EQ over EQ2 if you choose between them. but seriously.. play Rift over either, every day of the week and be happy you did.

Do what this old fart did - Rift. You might have trouble with the Storm Legion content unless you grind a lot (I could not continue past 50) but that is after you hit level 50. I went back to SWTOR and am enjoying it. Wildstar is what I am hoping will be my "lasting" mmo but it has at least another year before it is ready.

Loved the poster who suggested Eve.  Although it is a great game it is NOT pve. Old farts don't like to live in fear of getting ganked all the time. Nice game to visit but not to stay.

  • ZarriyaZarriya Member UncommonPosts: 446

    Eq2

I am playing it again right now.  I have done end game before.  I love the before endgame content and because I am guilded  I  always have a group running the lower content.  Make sure to hit Nektulos castle as you level, no game has ever done an instance better.

    1)  sub based - check

    2)  no "twitchy" combat - check

    3)  no having to move while pressing combat buttons -check

    4)  PvE - check

    5)  long-term appeal - check

I'm an old fart too. I would suggest GW2. Although it's not sub-based, it is still a highly detailed and updated game.

I'm thinking you want PvE mostly due to a more relaxed enviroment than being worried about being ganked. Well, GW2 has a totally free area you can do this in, and if you choose, instantly move into pvp after almost your first level.

    edit: sp

Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

    You quit at level 50?

Making out there is a gear check to be able to progress past 50 is completely false information. Yeh, it's a bit hard going into SL with a new character without dungeon gear but you can just push through and die occassionally. After about 20 quests you'll be fully kitted in SL gear and then that's it. I've done it with at least 3 characters... so if you really couldn't progress to SL then you either had a terrible character build or weren't playing to your full potential.

You shouldn't rush through to SL anyway.. there's tons on decent content to explore and enjoy from the old world.. like Ember Isle and the other level 50 zone you didn't do. By the time you've simply quested (not grinded) through both of them you'll be about level 54/55 and the start of SL will be a walkover.

I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
