Is it possible to play this game solo or is it needed to be in clans to have a bit of fun.....saw good pvp minded games like this before and it required to 'clan up' as all pvp was about ganking in groups hunting lower numbers.

if it can't hit 10k then it won't even be as successful as DF1..

Personally i'd lay heavy odds that many people that are interested in the game  are probably waiting to see what happens, whether the game launches successfully, and how buggy it is, or bug free even. So whether those numbers raise significantly is probably going to be down to how positive, or not the post launch reviews are image

As with most pvp mmos it's playable solo, but to get the full experience you really need to join a clan.

Expresso gave me a Hearthstone beta key.....I'm so happy :)

Players are everywhere in the world and at any spawns worth killing. At first, i thought it was only hot around the safe zones. I got near the middle of the map looking for a medium level spawn and i still had to run away from 2 players at some point. When i tried to find a spot to bindstone recall... at the end , i was like fuck it and i ran back in the safe zone with my mount just to be safe.

You must join a clan and if you don't you will end up killing things that are not worth it for the rest of your DF career.

Problem is the lack of a lawless system and i hope they will add it one day. Going rogue(red) Change nothing. You can still remain safe in the safe zone. As a result, we have players standing at the safe zone's borders to kill newb's all day and they cycle between multiple spawn outside the safe zones to kill anyone.

Just an addition to the OP, those figures are for JUST the NA server. Whilst EU is slightly less populated (still rammed), there's over 3k clanned I think.

    Disappointing, but expected.

Unfortunatly with any MMO where the world is pretty much based on people working together to build a city/town/whatever, you end up with these mega clans/zergs because most people are afraid of losing pretty much anything.  It could be the town/city they have built, but they're even afraid to lose that scrap of armor that they worked for 2 seconds to get.

It sucks because there could be so much more, but it always turns into a 2 sided server war if anyone even shows agression to another clan.

They probably would have had more people for release except for:

    1) Release date getting pushed back from November to December and then put back into beta.

    2) A pretty bad beta experience where up until the last month most testers thought the game was doomed.

    3) People remembering how bad the DF1 release was.

But remember, small consistent growth is better than a huge launch with everyone quitting in a month, so I am hopeful that the game will continue to build momentum and be successful.

Not to mention Steam release hasn't even occured and the starter cities from my experience are always crammed with players.

I would love to see DFUW go the same way EvE has.

Half the players I see are not in clan's.

The definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.

I'm not in a clan.  I'd imagine you could safely  assume 30-50% of that number makes up the remaining non-clanned players.  Which is already a pretty significant increase in population from DF1.  They haven't gotten on steam and I know that numbers will continue to go up.  It seems like the general feeling about DF2 is starting to turn a little bit.  Instead of everyone coming here to bash on the game, I'm starting to see people asking if it's worth a shot.  I'm also seeing some actual positive reviews from non-sandbox gamers.  AV just needs to continue to grow their game in the right way.  It took a lot of guts to scrap their original product and admit failure.  I think they are going to benefit greatly from it in the long run.

These clanned numbers are already bigger than DF1s clan numbers. You realize the vast majority aren't in clans, right?

This happened in DF too, but if you'd waited a bit longer you'd have seen this problem go almost completely away as other players killed the people trying to gank people coming out of the safe zones. The ones who killed the gankers don't hang out to get stuff that's low level so the safe zone exits clear up fast.

You'll always have some people that hang out, but that's why you need to be careful. This is one problem that cures itself in open PvP.

I would love to see DFUW go the same way EvE has.

It's not going to happen. EVE launched in 2003 and take a look where it is now. AV doesn't appear to have the skill or vision to turn DF:UW into a feature rich game like EVE. FFA FPS/TPS pvp combat is not enough to make a good game.

The free month has not ended yet either... lets wait until the second month to see it start to drop off..

I think it wil drop to a lower pop than DF had in the end and pretty fast.. could be wrong tho.

I'd think so too if i didnt find players everywhere, any hours of the day.

You have a fairly negative view point on this game. AV definately has the vision to make this game continue to grow, the new dungeons will be epic, the market system will do casual players (everyone really) wonders.

The fact they've been talking about super-awesome events is amazing, like unlocking new tiers in dungeons or gaining access to the floating city in the center of the map.

They've got the whole boat combat part to build upon in DFUW again.

They're going to add more world boss mobs.

The reworked enchanting will make a come back at some point.

Point being, this game will be far more feature rich and deeper than DF1 ever was. Aslong as they start pumping out this content on an acceptable time frame I don't see this game doing anything but growing.

I'm with Greymoor in that I think that DFUW will ultimately be succesful in the long run. I don't think it will have as much staying power as EVE, but I think it will be more like Shadowbane, where the first year or two are action-packed and well worth subbing for, then it will start to drop off. SB made the mistake of resting on their laurels and not really planning any follow-up to their game. Time will tell if AV will do the same.
