[Column] General: Divergence Online Part II

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

This week's Independency continues the interview Lisa Jonte conducted with Divergence Online creator, Ethan Casner. Find out what more he's willing to reveal about Divergence Online in Part II of our exclusive interview.

Lisa: You mentioned lore with regard to factions and it brings me to a common point of contention among some MMO players, the idea and value of story in a game. There are those who contend that a "true" sandbox game has no story whatsoever. How do you respond to that?

Ethan Casner: Our sandbox has no pre-determined story. You were somewhere else. You’re here now. What comes next is up to the players. I do enjoy hypothesizing about the possible shape of the world a year after launch though. I wonder if it’ll be broken up into individual corporate kingdoms with feudal lords battling in the open grassland, or a large zerg empire dominating everything while it’s generals conspire to piecemeal the organization into their own states.

Hard to not be excited about this game.

I sacrifised a goat to the old gods in the hopes that Divergence Online will succeed.

Tobad i had no money in my bank account when i noticed the campaign.

Not happy about his payment comments. Hopefully he will realize buy to play or sub are the only worthy models. Sub is proven.

The game is definitely ambitious and has perfect timing given the lack of this kind of thing. Yes, there are options - but only a few. I love seeing a passionate person decide to take matters into their own hands.

Additionally, bc the dev team is independent and small, they can implement the game however they want without having to take shit from any investor (other than maybe their audience and given the scope of the game, that wouldn't be a bad thing).
