I rarely write reviews on here and this is far from it.  I was intrigued by the first Darkfall and adventurine in general but decided (for probably the first time in my life) to take a pass on a MMO.  Currently "in my CD player" I am playing Defiance, TSW and GW2 with the missus and I have been feeling a void lately.  That feeling you get when you feel like there are no surprises left in the world so with the release of DFUW I came here with my desire to experience something different.

Originally I was not intending to get this, maybe I am just getting older, and the hardcore full loot PVP doesnt appeal to me as much (I was a hardcore mace shield vet in UO for years) combined with the fact some sort of a community appeals to me (I had heard the horror stories of DF1) I was hesitent to say the least.  Late last night  after staring at my desktop I took to youtube and came across this little gem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xinsSnYi2MM and that changed my mind.  I wanted to see if this was a sentiment that was echoed in the new(ish) community and maybe things would be different here.

They arent (as far as I can tell at least).  I logged in (after crashing twice trying to get into the tutorial) and had the age old gem of "where to get the best weed" in the world conversation which was punctuated by the usual profanity thats blocked out here.  Closing general chat I took to the world where I proceeded to walk aimlessly for (lack of exaggeration) 2 hours before i found some salamander things to kill.  10-20 minutes of those and a brown bear later I had found SOMETHING.  A bandit hideout thing.  I set up camp and started farming away.  After about 15 minutes there in the middle of combat (still with my starter gear) some guy in heavy armor ran up and ganked me.

I am not complaining, hell I just wanted to get that first one out of the way so I could move along with my experience but as I tried to figure out how to resurrect myself I had that sinking feeling of going to a themepark and loosing my $40 in the parking lot just as I got out of my car.

TLDR or summary:

The game looks OK, and I am sure there is meat somewhere deep down in the mechanics but really I feel like it is what I thought it would be.  Maybe I am a negative nancy but sometimes you have to call a spade a spade.  I am going to try some more this week and I will update this thread appropiately.  If I had to do it all over again I would probably invest my money elsewhere.

This really is not WoW/EQ where Gear makes the man. Here in eVE, the man with biggest balls, willing to risk the most, will win. It is risk/reward here- not always wear best items 24/7 and beat the crap out of all else.

quick reply, thanks man.  The gank didnt bother me, I had expected it eventually.  I am more surprised it took me a couple hours to even find a spot to kill a mob, and then proceed to get ganked

I haven't and never will play this game, but what I got from his post was that the ganking didn't faze him. The game is crap, that's the problem.

Do you even know how the game works? there are safe zones and character progression you know. I'd suggest you go read this guide http://www.darkfallonline.com/manual alternatively https://forums.darkfallonline.com/showthread.php?362900-Uzik-s-Ultimate-DFUW-Guide

I tend to agree with the OP.

I was a DF1 Vet, and tried DFUW to give it a shot.

Not going to talk about the preformance issues.  I spent most of last weekend playing, a few things stand out to me.

    1) the game has been improved (in my opinion) in terms of mechanics from DF1.

    2) the grind is better, but its still there, and it still isn't much fun to do.  Unless you enjoy killing 3000 of the same type of mob...

3)The community still, mostly blows.  Vamp guild zerg running around the starter 'safe zone' area ganking anyone who steps out.  Within a day or two of release, some guilds were already roaming around in really nice armor with very high prowess, essentially eliminating any competitive nature of the game.  Yes, they added a safe zone, but outside that, everything is still the same.  Groups of very dedicated players very well equipped essentially mowing down newbs.

Maybe I too have grown older and just don't have the same amount of fun in games of this sort, but it just isn't for me anymore. Between the hardcore guilds on killing sprees, the preformance issues (again, this  is a separate issue) and the overcrowding of the one spawn within the safe zone, I just don't have the patience for this.

the prowess system is also very odd to me, I enjoy it more then DF1's system, but prowess is mostly gained either through farming the same type of mob for days, weeks, months on end...or AFK farming resource nodes to complete feats...Neither of these methods is very intuitive at all..

OP, make sure you open up your map and turn on the markers so you see the spawns.  There is a fog of war so you need to explore a bit first or you can go to the "Yourmom Darkfall map" that has all of the spawns laid out for you.

It took you hours to find mobs? oO

What are you even talking about?

I believe that low level players need more prominant defense to get established before being sent to the wolves for slaughter. At least allow them to gain a stable footing within the game before they're utterly killed (maybe a buff instead of "safe zones"  that protects them from more veteran players and if the newcomer attacks the player the buff disappears).

They actually tried this in DF1, believe it or not...The playerbase exploited it, as is my other complaint with darkfall, exploits are always taking place...And AV has never had the resources to fully combat it.

Are you trolling? There's a world map (press m) that shows the location of mob spawns (it's a little button on the left side of the screen). Did you do the tutorial?

Wait.. I don't remember a buff in DF1 that protected my ass when I first started. I remember my first 5-10 minutes of the game trying to kill some goblins then getting slaughtered by 5-6 veterans on mounts.

yep, this was an attempt near the end of the games life. It's hard to find many articles about it now (since DF1 is dead) here is a link to one pre-release of the protection: http://syncaine.com/2010/02/04/darkfall-new-player-protection-possible-free-trial-setup/

I did not know that, I was looking at my map but really didnt see much through the fog.  I started in the dwarf (more vikingesque) area.  I got through the basic tutorial and found the bank then took off to find adventure.  I had watched probably 80% of the two "ultimate guide to" youtube videos and felt i had a reasonable (but far from complete) grasp of the game.  I can take a screenshot of the game next time I have a chance to get on and post my path but I left the city down a big hill then across a stream and kept walking in a straightish line, came to a river (where I think i got flagged for PVP and had yet to see a mob) then through a village area with some playertombstones and someone (player) standing on a tent AFK, looted a weaponswrack then kept going, across another river to the lizardmen salamanderspitty things.  Kept going found a stonehenge looking place with a huge bonfire surrounded by bears and the elelvator that took me to the bandits.  I was running virtually the whole time.  It was about midnight PST when i was on, the only players I saw were the 3 people in town talking about weed, 1 guy complaing in general chat and the guy that got me when i was killing bandits.

Maybe an overarching issue is that I work nights so I usually am on at 9pm-4am pst and there just is not enough players around then.  As I said in me original post I am going to give it another whirl or two see how it all shakes out.  Thanks to everyone for the input though.

I would like to see an alignment system of some sort, but safezones are good enough for protecting new players.

It is MUCH easier for a new player to survive an attack from a veteran character in DFUW as opposed to DF1.  Also, the safezones encompass enough new player spawns for a new player to get the first portion of their character development done.

And after that, the next areas for character progression are close enough to the safezones that you have a decent chance of escaping back to the safezone if need be.

New players need to learn early, and accept, that you WILL be killed in DFUW.  You WILL lose gear.  It is up to the individual to either overcome it, or quit the game.  Darkfall is not for everyone.  Over the years I have helped countless new players in DF1 and now DFUW.  I can tell within moments of speaking with someone if they are cut out for this game or not.

The people who begin a conversation complaining about losing gear, and calling PKs names and saying how they must be little kids are not cut out for the game.  Those who ask about how they can develop their character, what they can do to survive in PvP etc. are the ones who stick around.

(Uzik ibnYaraq in game. Always willing to help.)

Dude, Agon is a HUGE world.  Get in a clan they will show you good spots and you will have a TON more fun. And there are PLENTY of people on late night.  Me and my 3 others in our clan were grinding till server down last night( 6 a.m. my time) and we had a 3vs4 fight not an hour before sever down so I know were not the only ones around.
