hmmm,Ive never heard of it being played that way personally..
Only way I can think of is continuously hitting space bar,a strategic pause where you can plan your attack and skill use, then hitting space again for it all to take action..
rinse repeat...
If you've played Mass Effect or Neverwinter Nights(from Bioware).. its the same concept.
The length of the game is respectable(depending your play frequency).Pausing between each attack would slow it down, but the action pausing in the game is very simple,so once you get it down it shouldnt slow things down too much.
I missed this game, thinking of picking it up. I hear that it can basically be played as a turn-based RPG if you like. How does this work?
Thanks!
I think what you heard is that you can pause the game whenever you want with SPACE and still be able to give orders to your characters during this pause. It is one of the great features in DA:O I think...

No turnbased its group play npc's follow your lead and you attack in real time freely around with some tactical options like pause game and place some party members and yourself at some spot so you can handle fight better.
And you can play with every party member if you want any second switch in between during fight or before.

thats not a great feature, thats a wimps way out.
Yup, one of the many features I do not like about single player games. Skyrim in effect has the same thing but I hate playing it that way too. If I cant clear content with out using the pause button, I do not do it.
Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!
Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!
Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!

Somehow I doubt you'd be able to coordinate four seperate characters attacks/spells/movement against multiple enemies or difficult bosses, without a pause feature.
Your welcome to try though, your not forced to pause..

Your not forced to do that specially in skyrim there is no need for pause if you play carefully and smart.
Dragon age origin is designed to pause and give orders but you can do without but don't complain if you wont manage to win fights then.
If you handy you can eventually douing game with pause with 2 characters to make it much harder on nightmare its extreme but posible.
Me as rogue and morrigan as frostmage and partyly healer its posible.
Nature mage and frost mage also kick ass these are my favorite combo's others prolly have other combo's they like offcorse.

You don't need a to pause any combat in Skyrim, as you don't have to in Dragon Age 1 or 2.
Not trying good games because it has a pause button, (which you may or may not use), is a bizzare concept but it's your life I suppose..
OP, don't listen to Tank02 and that guy complaining that pausing is easymode. DA:O is NOTHING like Mass Effect! The second one is more on the action side, but if you want to play DA:O on anything other than Easy (and normal for certain areas) you WILL have to dish out tactical orders in the pause screen. You won't have a "turn", but you WILL have to give your team orders after using their skills, unless you plan on playing the game on the easiest difficulties. You can, theoretically, give out orders without pressing pause - since it takes time to use a skill. However, in serious battles you have to use strategy. Just look at some gameplay on youtube on harder difficulties if you are unsure.
