Update #31 Afternoon Update Mark-A-Thon Part 2

Mark: Lets start with races, people have asked about the races.  We have shown a couple of concepts. So lets talk about them in a little bit more… oh, not necessary detail.. but philosophy.

First each realm will absolutely have at least 3 races. If we make a stretch goal 4, and if things go well.. maybe 5… maybe even more.

The only reason I am saying 3 for now, with 1 as a stretch goal, is because I only want to promise what I know we can absolutely deliver.  At a minimum we are going to start with 9 races (3 realms x 3 races)

What are the races going to be?  One race per realm will be absolutely human. 2nd race per realm will probably be human with a twist, the affect of the magic from The Vail.  The 3rd will actually be a creature from legend, you have seen the St’rm you have seen our TDD.

So it is very safe to assume one human, one altered, and then something from legend that we want to bring to life.

Now, in terms of the races stats, in terms of bonus’s and things like that.  That’s one of reasons we are going to take a little longer per race.  Each race is going to be unique.  We want them to have very special abilities, we want to have things that other races do not have, whether you call them abilities, spells, stat bonuses.. and we are not going to nerf them after launch (chuckle)  We want them to be different, we need them to be different.. rock/paper/scissors and all that.

So, that’s it on the races.

Now lets talk about stats for a couple of moments. I am an old school guy, I like stats. I a like stats a lot.  Whether they are called strength, intelligence, dexterity, charisma, etc.. I like them, I want them in the game.  So we will have a lot of stats.  Min/Maxers you are going to be very happy.  Not only will you get to play with the stat, but racial bonuses will come into play, realm bonuses will come into play.  I have talked about gender factoring into some of the races, and as you have seen from the St’rm… she is kind of tough.  Guess what, males of that race?  Are not like that.

So, for the guys that are worried out there.. is this going to be a game with no stats, or are the stats going to be hidden?  Or we wont have a lot of choices?  You are going to have a lot of choices, you are going to have a ton of choices.  And not only just the choices of the stats, your realm, your race, your gender, and once your are done doing that, (edit) banes and boons.

So, that will give you some other things to choose from, other bonuses, other editions to the stats that will help you build out your perfect character.  How ever you want to do it.  We are leaving it up to you, and I have said in my principles and in a few forum posts; we are even allowing you to make mistakes.  If you want to gimp your character from the beginning you are going to have that opportunity.  If you want to try something a little different, you want to overload one stat and maybe give up a little somewhere else. You are going to be able to do that.

So Races, Stats.. that is it for this one, more on to another one.

Hopefully this will help to get it into the wikis and Q&A's.

Pandering to the soloers, now pandering to the min/maxers? Hmm, we'll i guess at this point being able to drag in pledges from ex-DAoC pvpers is probably necessary.

Ok stats are a staple, but when people start the min/max train it can get really unbalanced and clicky really fast. IMO this is what started the rot in DAoC, I'm not keen on seeing that rear its ugly head again.

Expresso gave me a Hearthstone beta key.....I'm so happy :)

    He didn't.

A lot of people around here like to talk in soundbites or regurgitated crap they picked up from someone else.

It gives them the illusion of having a semblance of intelligence.

I for one would be happy to see stats making a return.

The ability to actually develop a gimped character is very pleasing.

Why would you even want to play an RPG where it is impossible to make mistakes?

Why would anyone even play a game where you are guaranteed to win given enough time?

Managing stats is a art that has been lost over the years in MMOs. I am barely even cognizant of what exactly my str or con is in most of the games I play anymore. All I worry about is if the gear I am wearing is adding to those stats that I need.

However, there is still very little here and largely nothing is terribly groundbreaking or piquing my interest. There is no revolutionary system explained or even an overarching philosophy hinting at a system. He pretty much just says "you will have lots of choice."

Played: UO, DAoC, Shadowbane, DDO, LOTRO, Aion, Rift, TERA, ESO
Sampled: WoW, AoC, GW2, Vanguard, Neverwinter
    Playing: FF XIV

well that's too bad for you.  plenty here find the housing and crafting to be original and exciting, along with bringing along so many other great aspects of daoc.

probably not for you. move on.

pvp = best build of the week/month will be the norm so no uniqueness what so ever till a balance patch hits.

Most people would leave u guys alone on this, but every thread being poped in our face on the front page on "latest postings" keeps us coming back. Sure we could ignore it, but if this is where the convo is, ok... we will bite. You don't want the negative attention with the positive? Stop posting in multiple threads over and over and over and over and over and over and over.

Understandable, Its been talked to death about why people come to the CU forum to post if they are not interested and the fact it comes up on the 'news feed'.

The new threads have died down some... I think people got tired of dealing with the trolls.   Now most of the posts are just new information that we are trying to pass on to those that stated they wanted to see more concepts, info, etc...

    Have a great day!
