I could call anything an MMORPG. It doesn't make it so.

Somebody, somewhere has better skills as you have, more experience as you have, is smarter than you, has more friends as you do and can stay online longer. Just pray he's not out to get you.

I prefer listen to what Richard Garriott prefer to call it.

Dont need to have 10000 online same time, same world to be a MMO.

This quote from SotA website fits this game -

    https://www.shroudoftheavatar.com/?topic=what-to-call-this-new-style-of-mmorpg
Owain - I don’t know what you mean that the online modes do not involve a persistent world. In online play, whether SPO, FPO, or OPO, changes made to the world are visible to all players, even though all players are not visible to all players. But that’s not a great deal different to UO in that players on Napa Valley weren’t visible to players on Pacific, for example. SotA, as I’ve mentioned, just uses a different method to separate player populations for load management purposes. UO used seperate shards, SotA will match players according to play style. Different methods, same result.
Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game?

The only thing I have concerns about is "Massive". What constitutes "Massive"?

You could also say it's NOT, and that also doesn't make it so.  Not trying to be argumentative, just simply saying.  Not everyone's definitions are the same when it comes to games. Just how it is.

What's garriot released in the past 15 years that's been relevant or successful ?

Now that that's out of the way , massive is a term that is in front of the multiplayer part.

It's something that is different from just being multiple players - it's supposed to mean massive amounts of players.

What's so hard to understand if its not that then its simply a multiplayer game , not a massively multiplayer one.

Exactly.  Another MMO + RPG combo   =   /pass

When will game companies learn; they have 100 of these failure out there and they keep cranking them out.  Free Range Sandbox gameplay is the future.

And it will still be Massive, it will be Multiplayer, it will be Online, and it will be a Role Playing Game.
