Having a hard time getting a feel of this game.

Hey guys,

DF: UW is my first Darkfall game.

I know it is a indie studio developing Darkfall: UW. But I really feel it lacks alot:

- Clunky UI. Insanely small icons, very limited UI in general, press B, and then P for getting into character sheet for an example.

- The Tutorial Feels very limited.

- Really poor animations.

- When aiming with a bow, it has the same speed as when I look around. Now I know this ain't Call of Duty... But if my mouse is so fast, it is impossible for me to aim with anything ranged.

I logged in a few times, but these opinions above me keep logging out just as fast as I logged in.

Yeah the UI isn't great, specially chat. It's functional though and bug free so once you get used to it, it's fine.

    - The Tutorial Feels very limited.

That to me is a good thing. A quick and easy tutorial to get you going, not a 3 hour snooze fest that keeps you from playing the actual game.

    - Really poor animations.

That's subjective. Yes they're not WoW quality animations but they're not that bad either.

    Then slow your mouse down...

The issues you have with DFUW don't have much to do with the actual game. It seems you're just having a hard time adapting to something different, but that's not your fault, we've all been playing the same MMO for the passed 8 years and trying something a little different requires some effort.

I see what you did there.

However, as you can see in my sig, I haven't played WoW only. Played many MMO's too.

I just get burned off when I see lame animations and somewhat clunky combat. Same thing that killed it for me regarding TSW.

    - The Tutorial Feels very limited.

Caldrin - If I reduce my mouse speed my freelook and melee combat will feel too slow lol.

Well, DFUW is not your cookie cutter MMO experience.  Alot of things with DFUW are completely different from the last 12 same game different wrapper MMOs I have played.  Some see this as a good thing, others not so much.  That is up to you to decide.

You say that the tutorial feels very limited ...... it is.  There really isn't much hand holding in DFUW.  There's no nice story line with repetative actions that help people along the learning curve.  Again, some would see this as a good thing, others not so much.

I do have to completely agree with some of the issues you state above.  I play in 1920x1200 resolution, as a result, the icons are ridiculously tiny.  I can only hope at some point this will be addressed.  The UI really takes some getting used to, after your there however it works pretty good for what you need to do.  Completely and totally different from any other UI I have used in an MMO? Yes.  I do still push 1-9 on a regular bases to switch "Q" and "E" spells so at least it feels a little like a typical MMO.

Animations are hit and miss.  I assume it is due to lag issues.  It seems like they slowed down the game a bit from original DF which enabled them to squeeze in some animation cycles.  I find them better than the original DF.  When there are a lot of people around I do get choppy swings, sliding and rubber banding mobs.  Not sure if that is what you are referring to with animations or not.  Certainly not a good thing ......

The aiming speed thing takes some getting used to as well.  I have to find the happy medium with the speed.  If I set it too low for bow aiming, when I need the cursor to click on something it is painfully slow.  If I set the cursor speed where I like it for clicking on something, my bow aim is all over the place.  Perhaps in the future this will be addresssed.

I really don't believe Aventurine can play the indie card any more, they have been around the block once or twice before.  Granted they are working with the budget they have, but, I don't consider them indie ..... anymore.

Does DFUW have issues?  You betcha .......  If these issues get in the way of having fun playing it, well I suppose that is the answer.  No need to even ask the question.  After all, we're either having fun playing or not, right?

The UI is complex because this game does not play like other mmos and IS more complex.  Animations need work and AV has said they are plannin on it though I don't know if its a first priority.  The playerbase however I disagree completly with.  YES there are aholes in this game but they are in every game.  Only in this one they can talk to you and shittin up your day if they want to.  Find some good peep and you will have a great time.

Any newbs out there that need some help with the game or a good clan feel free to send Bandit Brawler on the NA server a PM.

I think what the OP said was all true, but I still like the game better than anything else.

Everything he dislikes could be fixed, but Aventurine is a small dev so it probably won't be fixed anytime soon.

It's kind of half a dozen of one or six of the other. Do you want a clean polished game that's just like every other game in the last decade, or one that is rugged, but has aim to shoot, great pvp, boats, crafting, skill based and all the other things darkfall UW brings you.

For me it's no contest, I'll be playing DFUW, I'd play it even if it was just to support a game that's closer to what I want to encourage devs with resources to develop similar games.

I know what you feel OP. I bought the game 2 days ago. I played it for about 6 hours and then just quit. I haven't even thought about it once today. Like the game was so uninteresting I almost forgot I bought it. What a disappointment (again)

The ui and tutorial are both problems imho too. Look at the evolution of the eve tutorial. It used to take 30 minutes, now you need a day or more... because its good to show people what's what in a game where failing has dire consequences. I don't mean to be that guy who keeps bringing up eve but hey, its the closest thing to dfuw that has had quite a bit of success. Which we all want for dfuw.

However I like the art of the world and I find myself very immersed whenever I play so to me they are doing quite a few things right to go along w their mistakes. I feel my character as an entity that I have invested not only time grinding but also thought and Risk into. This makes me care about the character and, thru that, the game.

It desperately needs better ui tho :)

RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

My friend had a similar problem of not being able to aim and mele with the same mouse setting.  Luckly his mouse has a scaling button that he can push to double the sensitivity whenever he wants.

Moral of the story. DFUW is a competive game where you must aim and use your skills quickly and efficently.  I HIGHLY reccomend a good gaming mouse if you wanna be serious though I do know poeple who are decent at pvp with a normal mouse and default settings.

I personally use a razor naga and couldn't play this game without it.

Sensitivity aside, which very high is best when you are used to it in FPS and especially for darkfall because you need very high sensitivity to melee fight properly, the core gameplay is just not very good and is not changed from DF:Conquer the Seas.

Whats sad is I actually did forget I bought it lol. I might fire it up later and check out the changes. I say its sad though because I was sitting here reading your post thinking to myself "How could anyone forget they purchased an MMO lol..." then I thought about and checked my game email and it turned out I did buy the game but forgot about it oO.
