Tried SWTOR, LOTRO... why can't anything match up to WoW?

patek5patek5 Member Posts: 7

I'm trying to find a game that I can get addicted to like wow, and I decided that the 2 F2P's that are most popular would be a good start. I even got into SWTOR and decided to pay for a month of it but the quality of the game and the graphics, fluidity, and bugs, are all too bad for me to even consider staying with it. Things are too logistically complex to make sense, and I'm not just some wrath or cata WoW player.

I started playing wow at the end of vanilla and have always loved it, quitting a few times and then coming back, but now that I have played every class to at least 80 I am getting pretty sick of it.(Minus a warlock... which I may just decide to try)

WHAT DO I DO?!?!?!

I can't find something that I love as much as I did with wow, no community, or anything that I did before. It's kinda driving me crazy but it's not working out, I can't find anything. Anyone wanna help?

I always love good communities, fluid games, solid gameplay. Those come with a lot of these games but I'm having a hard time finding all of them together like I did with wow. Although, wow is getting old. Battle pets, countless new things and simplicity that has been forced into anyone that is experienced in the games hands.

Any suggestions, things to read up on, or advice, would be greatly appreciated.

Also, any of you having this same problem?

All I can say is try something very different from WoW.

Swtor is IMO not different enough, I hate the word clone and won't use it, however it is similar enough that if you played one you know how to play the other.

There is nothing to figure out.  So try something very different.

edit - there may be a specific puzzle or fight to learn.  But the game itself has been learned, you've been there and done that.

edit - it really doesn't make sense to try and get that feeling of newness and wonder from something that is essentially the same as what you just left.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it is bad.

    WoW= Waiting on Wildstar

That's understandable and I see what you mean, I understood almost all of what was going on in the game just with different races and UI.

What would you suggest then? If there are any political games or medevil games, maybe futuristic... I don't really know but if you have any direction to point me in that'd be cool.

You can check Neverwinter out. I am also a long time WOW junkie that is trying to move on lol. So far Neverwinter is nice, though not as fluid or polished yet (open beta).  But it is different in some ways. Cash shop is expensive, but not needed.  It just released in open beta today, so the queues are way overboard -  was way far back in queue so I'd wait a few days.

I was playing Skyrim of late since I was having trouble finding the "right" game to play. I played LOTRO, SWTOR, GW2, plus some others for bits and pieces.

    Good luck! :)

I'm back to playing Istaria.  Really very different from WoW.

But this can be an incredibly grindy game so fair warning.  It is essentially a crafting game.

I like to play with dragons and build plots and fly so this game gives me lots to look forward to.  But it can be very very very grindy.

I'm told Uncharted Waters Online is quite good as well, I'm told it's pretty different.  Of course Eve is very different.

I miss CoH, it was also pretty different.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it is bad.

Explain why you left WoW... a lot of the other games follow the same mold so to speak... the classes may be different, the quests, and the scenery... but in the end they tend to be very similar at the core.  If you miss community, you might be hard-pressed to find it anywhere.  Best advice I can give you is to take your time playing and exploring whatever you test out... act as if there is no end game and that hitting max level means the game is over... in a lot of cases, that's usually what happens.  I don't think anything will ever be as addicting as your first MMO... including your first MMO if you released it 10 years later than it was first introduced.  Times have changed and so have you.

if you enjoyed WoW the most during vanilla and BC and also loved 40man raids then put wildstar on your radar!

the problem with WoW is that it helped to homogenize the MMO indstry, not its actual quality. the reason nothing can match up to it is that it's very good, and has a very large, strong community.

Neverwinter will never be as fluid and polished as WoW, i can 500% guarantee you on that. unless you waste shit load of money in that game and feel inside "i spent shit load of money in here, i should stick around" ,within 3 months you will feel "i have had enough with these PWE bastards".  word of advice : stay away from PWE games.

SWTOR graphics Bad......and you want mmo with WoW depth......your so screwed that kind mmo dont exist least not yet. SWTOR has one the best graphics so if you consider that bad your in real pickle buddy. LOTRO on ultra as well plus lotro has one the best in depth stories in the mmo market.

Well I suppose I left because I got "burnt out", not that I'm sick of the gameplay or quality of game. The new expansions have destroyed the purpose of guilds, making friends is worthless because you can just queue for anything now, and leveling with full heirlooms is so easy that I can't possibly find anything new or fun to do because I've basically done it all.

Those other games look very interesting but half of the reason I don't enjoy SW:TOR is because it is so freaking crappy when it comes to fluidity and quality of explanation. I've really considered EVE but it just seems kinda like exactly what I don't like about SW:TOR, so maybe I'm just screwed and need to wait for new games to come out.

Maybe a good RTS is all I need to get away from MMORPG's for a while and reenjoy them when I return. But even if it comes down to doing that, the last one I played was Age of Empires III like a few years ago haha.

I thank all of you for the feedback :D

I suppose I should have reworded my use of "graphics". I don't have a 7.6 rated computer(windows 7 rating thing), I have a 4.6. So I'm running it on "very low" and am having a hard time not finding things to be jumpy and whatnot, which is not the case in wow or even lotro to the extent that swtor had. Maybe that shouldn't be one of my major concerns because that is 90% my problem not the games

I love how you can make a definitive statement like this, like you have a crystal ball that tells you how a game will fare. Ive played all of PWE's games the only ones that arent worth playing are Forsaken World and Rusty Hearts. Also Cryptic is developing Neverwinter not PWE. Perfect World is the publisher of the game.

I'm going to recomend taking a look at TERA, it's free now so not like you need to pay anything to try it.

It has the same stale quest/leveling system that every game you've mentioned has but the combat is very different and you might find it much more enjoyable.  The graphics are also very different than the games you mentioned, whether or not you'll like them is largely a matter of taste.

The downside is it's very light on max level content right now which should... hopefully... be taken care of when they get around to translating some of the updates the Korean version has already gotten.  The cash shop is also annoying but it's far less punishing on people who don't want to spend anything than swtors f2p model.

Because you keep trying WoW clones, and you're tired of WoW, else you'd still be playing it.

Guild wars 2 and get In a good guild. Or possibly age of Conan.  Both games will offer you amazing worlds with alot of depth. They also have alot of variation to what you have seen in WOW.  Remember get in a good guild in any game you try.

I dont see any logic you played 1 game by them then used what you garned from that game to lay assumptions on all their other games. Thats not logic that excuses. I have played all of PWE's games from the crappy Forsaken World to the Partially decent Torchlight 2. Compared to some of the big name companies like SOE or NCsoft PWE has a better track record. Also Cryptic is the Developer as in they are creating the game where PWE is only hosting the servers.Thats why when you boot up the client you see Cryptics Logo not PWE's Logo.

    This post blew my mind.

I've heard people defend swtor's graphics as not terrible... but to actual call it one of the best...  I thought it looked almost 10 years out of date when it launched...  I guess graphics are largely a matter of personal taste...

OP speaks for himself of course becuase i have played several games that are not only better than Wow but MUCH better.

The difference from soemone like me and others is ,i was gaming before Wow,so that game was never able to solidify in my head that is the way MMORPG's should be done.

I am actually open minded to anything ,if it does three things, shows me depth and effort and thought. It is easy to come up wioth a great concept but if you do it half ass why even bother,i know i won't bother toi play it.

I could down the lsit of what Wow did not put effort into and what imo it just did not do well, but would take too long and really we should not be talking as if Wow is the game to compare to because i have never tohught much of it at all.IMO it is just another mmorpg and one that doesn't look very good either.

I have posted before several games that imo have done some good stuff for this industry,i would be really streessed to tihnk of one thing Wow did that i would want in my own game and that is the truth,i really have nothing against Wow what so ever.

I guess i sort of hinted at it without meaning to,i feel a lot of gamers that started in Wow have not been open minded or willing to "LET GO".SO many gamers treat game code like it is their favorite baseball glove or favorite bike, they want to keep it forever even if 500 products come along that are better. We see the same thing in music, people have a favorite band and even though they might turn oput 5 straight crap dvd's the fans still call them the best.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

did you really read my post? i wrote 3 games name in that, did you get that? i will repost for you here :

if cryptic was the publisher of the game i would say "right on, i am going to rock neverwinter", but it is PWE so yeah "screw that"{Publishers arent developers nor do they have a say on the development of the game}. and if you think PWI(PWE's 1st ever mmo and also 1st pay2win mmo in USA), Champions Online(after PWE got hand on them) STO(same criteria) and the rest of their games are worth paying for then i understand why you are dreaming of an awesome neverwinter. as for me, i use logic and calculation and evidence; i don't need a crystal ball or some stupid as reviewer to tell me that a game published by PWE is worth paying for or worth playing. but hey, i just provided an honest advice you are free to ignore it or bash it.

Do yourself a favor and stop mistaking opinions as facts and logic for it is neither.

"Possibly we humans can exist without actually having to fight. But many of us have chosen to fight. For what reason? To protect something? Protect what? Ourselves? The future? If we kill people to protect ourselves and this future, then what sort of future is it, and what will we have become? There is no future for those who have died. And what of those who did the killing? Is happiness to be found in a future that is grasped with blood stained hands? Is that the truth?"
