ok, so i bought city of heroes tonight. so far it looks like i wasted $30. god i wish i had a trial for this beforehand.
er...what exactly is the point to the game?
i see very few actual people playing. am i just in the wrong area? i'm on the infinity server.
the city is just full of women being mugged. battle is boring and bland so far. isn't there an auto-attack? i hate having to click the same button over and over just to make my character attack.
one thing i have to say is that they did an awesome job on character customization! holy crap, is that detailed! i'm not sure how long i spent with that, 30 minutes at least!
i need to give it some more time or get some tips or something. 1st impression so far is not very good.

You can choose any attack-move as your auto-attack. Hold Ctrl while you left-click the attack.
I find the game a lot amusing when I first started. I liked the atmosphere. Maybe this game just isn't you? It would probably be stupid to advice you to try CoV if you find CoH boring. They are pretty much the same game.
To be honest you picked a bad time to start playing a hero, with villains just being added. There are plenty of people on the servers, but they are in the villain zones playing villains. Justice (the server I'm on) has more than double the amount of active villains than heros at the moment.
As for content, see your first contact who should be in the city hall (near where you first loaded into Atlas Park or Galaxy City).
i'm just about to finish the quest where you have to destroy the robots to get the gears or sprockets or whatever.
i started my character as a scrapper. is there a more fun class to play?
one reason i waited so long to try CoH was because i'm not a big fan of superheroes, so the game didn't really appeal to me, but i kept hearing good stuff about it so i finally broke down and got it...
Can only answer that if you let us know the type of play style you enjoy. Scrappers, once you get a few powers under your belt are the easiest AT to master. As they are designed for soloing. To be honest I find playing one somewhat dull, simply because its all about defence and being (generally) limited to melee range.
If you are finding melee dull I would recommend a blaster or defender. Defenders are more rounded in their capabilities, ie. debuffing, healing, range attacks. However, damage output is lower than a blaster. Controllers are fun, but if mezzing and group support itsn't your thing you'd probably find the pace of leveling slow outside of being grouped.
If you want to try a blaster I would recommend fire, energy or ice as a primary and engery as a secondary. Energy has that melee factor added in, so more involved that just standing back and firing. The other secondaries are more more mez/debuff oriantated.
CoH can be a little borring if you are not on a high population server. The virtue server has a lot of people on it an tends to be the one to fill up fast.
If you have started as a scrapper then you are a soloer. Still once you get to 14th and get flight then things can really be fun (Oh and take air supperiority first, great as an attack and knocks people down)
If you do not like the solo option, group up, Help out the weak defenders or controllers. Get up in levels, once you make it to about 16 to 20 you should start having a lot more fun.
Oh and one BIG hint... if you can ... avoid the hollows ... bad place for a soloer.
PS if you do get to Virtue drop Knight Alpha 9 a call and I will see what I can do to make it a bit more fun for you.
Make a blaster, they're a hoot.
Try all the classes. See what appeals to you.
Run some mission arcs. It isn't all "hunt the mobs you find"
