If you're on the fence about trying this game just do it. You might be surprised like I was.
I picked a Great Weapon Fighter which is most likely the weakest class at the moment but I'm still having a blast. The instencing is heavy in this game but it's well done. I like the hidden switches and panels or the fabric that looks like a banner on a wall but you can run through it and find a chest or mob to kill. Also enjoying using the traps in dungeons to kill off monsters faster.
So far I've run about 4 player made quests and although they weren't written by pros they were enjoyable and even deserved a small tip. I can see alot of potential in the foundry if they can expanded it even more. Even thinking about trying my hand at authoring something.
Bottom line the game is FUN to play. I haven't spent any money and I don't really see a reason to right now. I'm not really into riding a flaming horse or anything else like that which costs quite a bit. The only thing I might drop a couple dollars on once in a while is the keys, an extra bag and more character slots.
Oh almost forgot, the Astral Diamonds, don't worry about these too much. My second day in at level 16 I had about 7k of them and it only cost me about 500 to equip my character with the best greens from the AH. Blues cost more but aren't necessary unless you have to have the best right away. Higher up I expect higher prices but I'll worry about that when I get there.
Only been in one pvp match so not much experience there it was a hold your flags flavour and was fun. Got a bit of an adredaline rush from it, but that may be to beeing old. :P
Just try it, it's worth the download.

A man is his own easiest dupe, for what he wishes to be true he generally believes to be true...
i'd say most agree since game plays very much like a 3d diablo in a way.. good fun though and foundry is great.. done some really fun foundry missions so far
I angered the clerk in a clothing shop today. She asked me what size I was and I said actual, because I am not to scale. I like vending machines 'cause snacks are better when they fall. If I buy a candy bar at a store, oftentimes, I will drop it... so that it achieves its maximum flavor potential. --Mitch Hedberg
You know what I actually tried that once on a girl in a coffee shop and to my surprise I hooked up with her for a couple months.
In some parts of the world people have bandwidth caps so they might be debating wether to download or not.

Thats the way to approach it, as a cross between an MMO and a diabloesque action RPG.
Its far from perfect but Im having fun.
Can you tell me which MMO's that you have played have had a great story? Honest question.
"it's worth the download" is not much motivation for a brand new 2013 MMO with the Neverwinter title.
After playing it awhile i'll give you my take. The game is painfully ordinary. Graphics look 10 years old on max settings. Only 5 classes with many build choices that ultimately don't make you much different then anyone else. Animations are low frame, cheesy and exagerrated like an anime.
The game plays alot like DDO but the dungeons are actually worse because instead of walking through a story figuring out puzzles and such(like D&D) you charge through not having to think about anything until it's clear so you can do it all over again.
Overall they had the nerve to release another D&D online game without making it a open world. You feel like you're in a game lobby deciding what Diablo 3 minigame to play next.
4/10
Yeah that might be why I like it too. The right mix between action and mmo.

Top of the list TOR. I loved the story from start to finish for each class I played. LoTRO was also great. Rift was intrigueing even if the gameplay didn't gel with me.
I think what I liked most about Rift's intro story was that it fully explained the world to you, and why you were doing what you were doing. NWO does a good job explaining the mechanics of the game and giving you a tutorial, but it didn't hook me into caring about why there were zombies to kill. There's no lead in to why they're attacking. I'm dropped into a battlefield and told if I want to live I need to fight.
Mind you I'm only level 4 and have just begun the game (which is why I say the story can only get better), but I find an undead army led by a powerful sorceror/sorceress to be cliche, generic fantasy. It's a plot device as old as amnesia (Which you can choose to have in the opening dialogue window), and almost every fantasy game tackles the tale at one point or another. But few tend to lead with it.
The heart of D&D is supposed to be the story of the adventure, and this game hasn't started me off in a fashion I feel does credit to the game for which it's based, nor the world for which it portrays. Here's to hoping that improves as I play.
The stories are out there.
They just don't come from Cryptic
Not that your criticisms are invalid, I am not impressed with the content put out by Cryptic so far. And while I don't necessarily mind the graphic style, something feels off about Neverwinter itself. But the foundry is very much the spirit of D&D, and will ultimately the backbone of this game.
I can already see the ultra creative people creating huge storylines meant to encompass many, many levels.
The foundry probably willb e the saving grace of this game if enough people keep playing it and enough of a percentage create content using said Foundry.I say this because 90% of user produced content is usually crap but that last 10% can be stellar. If th epopulation is big enough that 10% can be enough to keep everyone satisfied.
The foundry is specifically why I'll be playing this game to at least 15. I DM for my friends, and I look forward to the chance to tell a story through this type of medium.
