Unbiased Review from an Avid MMO player.

As someone who strayed far away from DF1, I'm very happy so far that I purchased DFUW.

I'll start with progression, Basically you kill things gather and just do everyday activites to gain prowess which can be used to advance your character.  You can put points in any stat or skill that you want, this game gives a ton of freedom with playstyle choice and customization.

Risk vs. Reward plays a heavy role in this game like a good Full loot MMO should, and its executed pretty well.  Safe zones are found around NPC towns/cities to provide safer prowess gain for newer players, however the more prowess heavy creatures and gatherings lie outside the safezone where anyone can kill you at anytime. Personally, I love the set up.

Clan cities are also found outside the safe zone, and Its quite amazing to watch your clan throw up keeps and buildings after hard work and farming.  At this early in the game not many city sieges have occured, but they are a huge part of the game and are epic as **** from what I'm told. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WW_TnIRgVEc&list=UUeXzGHiwbo1U_7CLdHrAjKw&index=1 for a better visual.

Combat is executed from mainly your left mouse click and right mouse click, followed by aiming with your mouse.  You select the skill you want you use with the numbers 1-8, e, and q, and can change the bindings around (highly suggest you do).  Though it seems simple on paper, Combat is very exciting in this game especially in large group combat where skill and focus will easily determine the winner.

Crafting Is a huge part of the game too.  The best gear, Buildings, Weapons, mounts,  Even boats. Are all obtained through crafting and harvesting.  If your a dedicated crafter, there is a ton to do in this game.  Even as a casual crafter (since I give most of my material to clan crafters) I find it enjoyable to salvage and gather mats and turn it into a product that my clan members and I will always be able to use.

The Grind.  Not bad at all, when I compare the time I'm spending farming something for prowess to other games farming for levels I have no complaints.  It can be hard at times solo, but its completely possible to become end game viable through solo play. That being said I would highly encourage joining a clan, they are what make the game and community so immersive.

If your someone straying away from the game because of the various troll threads, or just not knowing whether or not its worth it, I would highly suggest giving it a pickup, Its one of those few games that really give you an adrenaline rush.  They've already been hotfixing since launch, and new roles/dungeons are coming soon (we can hope) :D

Thanks for this review. The more and more I read, the more interested I become... maybe I'll pick it up when I'm not so busy.

Do you think I'll be at a severe disadvantage if I wait a month or two? That always worries me with FFA PVP

Currently playing: GW2 (Maguuma), DAoC (Uthgard), & Aion
Waiting For / Watching: TUG, CU, Black Desert, Archeage,Wildstar, and ESO.

    No problem :D

As for the disadvantage, yes and no.  You certainly will have to spend time to be on the same pedestal as higher end pvp players stats wise, and assuming your not a solo player,  joining a good clan eliminates gear grind and they can also help you go out the safe zone and take over some of the higher prowess mob spawns to help you catch up.

If your a solo player, then I would say you'll be at a large disadvantage if not then I can't see the experience being too different then it is right now where its very possible for a 30k prowess character to beat someone with say 60k prowess.

This is the only video that gives the true DF siege feeling...there is a lot of DF 1.0 siege videos which do the feature justice.  Unfortunately the video is like some teaser so you dont see much.

As far as disadvantages go:  You are already at a disadvantage plenty of players with a ton of prowress, however, once you max a skill or stat you have all the time in the world to catch up to them since they wont be advancing their skills further...only true advantage a no lifer will have beyond the initial role maxing is the ability to switch to other roles.

I liken it to EVE.  Yeah people are years ahead of others, however it takes a set amount of time to reach a vets maxed skill levels, vets have the advantage of "more tricks in their bag" so to speak.

Basically you probably werent going to be a famously good 1vs1 pvper anyway, and getting into a clan that seiges, or just showing up to a seige on your own as mercs, scavangers (called scroachers) or bystandards watching. Its an open world siege so really anything can happen...part of the reason they are so fun.  Either way even a noob is useful in a siege.

Theres a lot of players who seem to be obsessed with the feats and prowress racing...this is not fun.  You complete feats for just playing so i reccomend just doing whats fun and the feats will come.  Think of them as achievements for literally every type of action and mob in game, so its like having a quest out for every possible quest in game.  As long as your doing more than AFKing your working towards one feat or another and getting prowress per action (though not much)

Sieges and clan politcs are truely what DF is about, and its what the game does best.  They can be epic in size and action.  Theres often surprises, backstabbing, univited guests, and mayhem...and it can go on for hours.

Nice quick review of the game OP.  DFUW could use some more of these slightly off center reviews as opposed to the polar opinions that generally flood these boards.
