This is my complaint with Super Hero video games in general and it's a major reason why I enjoy the few Super Hero games that don't use licenced characters. I liked X Men Legends for the novelty but as for the rest of them (Legends 2, Marvel Universe 1,2, Marvel v Capcom +, Injustice, etc) the imbalance between characters is disingenuous. Ultimately I'm left asking, 'What's the point'? What's the point of using Juggernaut in XL 2 if he can't smash through walls? Instead I have to traverse a maze of walls to get to my goal. Magneto should be able to tear through steel barriers with no problem. That's who he is, that's what he does.

In MUO, I played as the Hulk and in the opening level I had to use potions when fighting the Green Goblin. Electro is an open mission boss that needs several heores to defeat (and several Hulks and Thors were present).

I understand that game design is difficult, but there needs to be more thought in gameplay when using characters with lengthy established backgrounds. There's more to these characters than just how they look...unless I missed the issue where Hulk gets defeated by Taskmaster in a straight up grudge match.

You know what's funny? The lack of power would make perfect sense if people were allowed to make their own heroes. You'd start as a fledgling hero, someone who has just discovered their powers, or created their devices, or finished their origin story of choice. You're unfamiliar with your own capabilities, and as you fight crime you become more experienced & adept at managing your abilities, strengths, and weaknesses, gradually gaining confidence and taking on stronger villains.

But nope, screw all that logic. Now you're playing a version of Iron Man who can't fly, can only fire energy blasts (despite having the strength to lift hundreds of tons), and no explanation as to why one of Earth's mightiest heroes (who has gone toe-to-toe with the HULK) has trouble with a couple guys carrying uzis.

I still don't see how they took such a simple thing (ARPG with superheroes!) and screwed it up so massively. Breaks the heart.

Then again, we live in a world where we can't get a decent Macross or Power Rangers video game either, both concepts (hell, MMPR is just a different type of superhero show) which you'd think would be easy to translate to the medium. Sigh...

It's a sad day indeed when a family is too afraid of reprisals to publicly thank somebody for saving their lives.

    Nice article.

@ Suzie - Black Widdow is not superhuman. She Hawkeye & Punisher are just highly trained & well equiped humans. Beyond that even in the comics most Marvel heroes get hurt, even Hulk (though injury & rage makes him ever more destructive.)

I've been in CB several months & to me the game lacks a wow factor & crafting is uninspired & boring. I hope a lot improves over the next few months.

I played this for a couple of weekends now and really enjoyed it,  it is a good r fun game.

BUT i played deadpool mostly will a tiny splash of the hulk. Deadpool felt fine but Hulk didnt feel like the hulk.  You really have to get over your love of marvel heroes and their story because this is an action rpg, everyone has the same hits, is rough as tough as each other (in one way or another) and does the same damage.

One bit that particuliarly urked me was fighting the enemy boss Bullseye as the hulk. He does a an attack where he spend 2-4 secs aiming you with a throwing knife then 1 shots you if you not hiding. Hulk feels slow so hide in tricky and WTF you can,t one shot the hulk with a throwing knife!

Party of the Glory of the Marvel Universe is the varying strengths of the characters and villains, dont cheap out and make then all just equally powered chacter classes.

I nabbed an Ultimate Pack after Gazillion pulled the extra extra bonus $ but I enjoyed Deadpool and Rocket Raccoon so much I didn't care. This weekend I took a spin with Black Panther and again had fun. Since it's F2P you really don't need to buy anything but if you have a favorite you'll more than likely buy one & maybe a special costume for him/her. Aside from future dlc one playthrough will probably suffice for players of MH. This Marvel game should do well if they play their cards right which brings me to my Cajun bud Gambit who I hope eventually makes it into the playable roster not to mention Ghostrider ;)

I haven't played the beta but the idea of an ultimate allianceish online game sounded pretty cool. It's been awhile since I played it but in that game your character started out powerful and just got more powerful as you went along. It makes more sense if you are starting out as established heroes.

I wondered about how they would handle the Hulk in general. I mean shouldn't he be able to just wade through the game getting more and more angry, stronger and stronger?

Why on earth did they decide to allow multiples of the same hero in the same game? That just seems like a weird design decision. How many players in a game anyway?

Even my grandma on a chairweel can be better than diablo 3, and she is more funny in any case; anytime from "Marvel heroes" to "Grim Dawn" and "The incredible adventures of Van Helsing"  there will be a large injection of arpg for to forget how we wasted 5 years of hype.

Yeahhhhh, having multiple copies of the same hero running around is just not going to work for me. I would dig this game if it were an ARPG, but having open world areas with 200 Wolverines would just annoy the hell out of me. No thanks.

Was hoping they would do a DCUO style game except in the Marvel Universe. Missed oppertunity.

I totally agree with Bill's view. I actually liked Gazillion's approach of making this into an ARPG with licensed characters. However, with  that I said I have found the combat to be boring and a little tedious. They really need to make you feel super. Trash mobs should be taken out in one hit.

i've played probably 4 wks now, first alone. then with friends. have managed to try about 6 characters. yes everyone is weak and not super at first. yes i know that's not super. yes crafting is weak, i hate crafting...i'd rather farm. yes there are 47 spidermen bouncing around the lower levels, everyone loves spidey, and what the hey--he's free today.i personaly think the game is quite cute, slightly like diablo, in that 3/4 over the shoulder view.if they just upped the costumes and expanded the crafting a bit, it would go along way to make alot of peeps happy. i again personaly love playing the higher levels with my buds. they got the mmo part right

    Hi

I played the game for a while but this is as the reviewer said not an MMO for tru MMO players.

Having no prior info about the game I was expecting something like DC Universe Online, which I beta tested but never played, only updated and better.

I actually went back and installed DCUO and played it for a while after playing this.

IMO It is a lot more fun to play.

If anyone hasn't tried it and like superhero games you should give it a try, it's F2P so there's nothing to lose.

I almost puke when I read few people mention Diablo III when Diablo III is nothing but completely Trash! nothing near to Path of Exile and not to mention Lineage Eternal but going back to TOPIC Marvel is a FAIL in every aspect... IF im going to play a game just to KILL my time i will surely use it on at least worth to play otherwise what's the difference playing "trash" and an MMO "trash" like

One question/statement if I may, Not that I disagree with the review and opinions here, but...

... if this game was released by blizard, or perfect world, or any other 'BIG' name, what would the review be like then i wonder.

No don't answer me, just yourself(Looking at you Bill and sue) - I've seen MUCH worse games with bigger names get 8-9 scores and 'rav reviews' when the game itself was just.. repeats of older games yet not quite as good(IE trash)

I missed river city ransom because i never owned a console in my life except Atari 2600. This was my chance to get river city ransom "suped up." This is a chance to play comic books in the real world where no one is killed like at Santa Monica, Ca today. This has been played out time and time again at our institutions of learning. I am growing very very sad and tired of this. Today, I took out Black Widow, 600 creds and had fun shooting the canon/cannon fodder with a stun and a slash whilst an  2 hours ago I could bearly hit them with with my Wooish style pop/pops. The only one dying was me "There's No One On The Wrack But Me," The Sultan to Baron Munchausen.
