Won't ever return to Lotro after that Gap of Rohan expansion mess. I miss playing in Middle Earth, but I miss nothing from Lotro.

Rohan was easily the best expansion to Lotro and I wasn't that big fan of the game before really since Moria came out. I liked the SoA times tho.

    REALITY CHECK

This game has always held a place in my heart.  I usually grab a 3-month sub once a year and play it for a bit.  I really think it is due to my love of the IP more than the gameplay but hey, whatever brings you in I guess.

LOTRO is decent...but even though Turbine is paying me to play the game, I find myself not logging in for months at a time.  Probably more to do with my general malaise with MMOs in general these days....

It's hard to play this game if you are burned out on themepark MMOs.  This is one of the grand ole Themepark MMOs and they do not try to hide it.  From your very first quest in the game to your very last quest, you can bet you will be killing X number of creatures.....over, and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over.

You will collect thousands of boar haunches, thousands of wolf and bear skins and you will do it at every single level.  At some point, you marvel at the shear limited intellect of the developers as they continue to throw the same quest at you.

The main story quest is wonderful.  Actually, it is maybe the single best quest line ever created.  Some parts drag on way too long, but for the most part THAT is why you play the game.  The music is hit or miss.  The stuff created by Chance Thomas (I think that is his name) is first class.....but my god, the AWFUL music in the ROI expansion....lol.  To call it music is an insult to anything remotely resembling a tone structure.  You could call it random horn beeps and that would suffice.

Combat is even tougher to play after you play games like GW2 or Skyrim.  It is bad, real bad.  I would recommend playing the Warden or the Runekeeper classes because you can move around and fight with those two classes and it feels more modern.

The game was once very solid.  It has long since passed into the west and turned into a lobby/token/barter fest where you solo 99.99999% of your time in the game.

But for some reason, it still is a decent play.  That is more so because the game actually has real depth in terms of story and characters, something very few MMOs have now adays.

hey look, more people bitching about more content to a game they don't play. MMORPG.com crowd is truly original.

I still play this and still enjoy it, but I admit I am suffering burn out on it. My Wife and Daughters and several of our rl friends play it so it is the subject of conversion.

Good to see more new content. When WB bought out Turbine I wasn't convinced that a Movie Corp could in anyway shape or how manage or own a MMO without ruining it. I was wrong it looks like.... we might see Mordor yet. I am no fan of the Turbine Store but at least LotRO will one day I think reach the finishing line.

As long as Turbine and WB don't try to shrink the world size down or do something else stupid then maybe I will stick around.

Even if not everything is as I would make it, at least I can adventure and explore Middle Earth and have fun in a MMO based upon Tolkien's works.

Well said but i got to add one thing. Yes warden and runekeeper is the more mordern classes to play but minstrel is pretty decent and can compete in turns of gameplay enjoyment.

But just fyi they are all pretty much bad gameplay we are just saying the three classes that are even close to being enjoyable (fast pace)

I really want to play LOTRO, but I keep reading that it's shutting down in 2014 when the IP rights expire.  I guess they have the option to extend to 2017, but many question whether it's profitable enough to warrant the expense.  =/

If they were shutting down in 2014 why add all this new content?  This is not the Star Wars IP.  The chances of another company bidding up the IP rights are slim and non existent.

You...don't think anyone else is interested in the rights to Lord of the Rings?

Also, Turbine released an expansion to AC2 in May, 2005 and shut the game down in December, 2005...
