Is World of Warcraft Safe from: Hackers, Identity thives, etc? Please Read

Is Wold of Warcraft safe from identity thieves? My mom own't let me buy the game because somebody stole her credit card twice over ten years ago. Now she won't let me get it because she thinks our identity will be stolen. Even though I don't want to use a credit card online(I don't think that that is completely safe) I just wanna use a pre-paid game card from EBgames. Is that really unreasonable. So just give me your opinion and help me convince her. Also, If you fell like it, could you post why or why not? It would help me convince her even more

Simply put, Blizzard is a huge company with an insane amount of subscribers, this isn't your typical Mom and Pop company selling socks off Ebay.  They have some of the best secure billing you will find. If they were somehow compromised (which isn't likely) they'd be all over it and the FBI would be heavily involved due to the size of the company and their credit card database.

BUT, if the 1 in 999999999999999999999999999999999 chance that someone did.  It would be all over every major news network and the person who did it would have the wrath of God (or Bush) come down upon them faster than you can say huricane Katrina.

Couple that with that fact that all credit cards are individualy insured against any kind of credit card fraud (you just call them and they'll remove the charges and send you a new number.) you really have nothing to worry about.

what about without the credit card? Can I be affected if they hack my account then? I mean if I am using a game time card, can I be affected?

i've never used a game card so i'm not sure what info you need to give when you use one.

i'd say if you're that worried about security, use the game card.

the only way someone would be able to get info about you is if you download unknown files for the game, like unknown mods that have keyloggers in them or if you give out your user id and password. even them, all they could find out would be you name and address (if you used a game card).

I'm pretty sure once you set up your account with blizzard, they block out part of your credit card # on the screen anyway.

someone hacking blizzard's account databases seems unlikely but is possible.

This is just a case of people being afraid of things they don't understand.

I had cash stolen once.  Never got it back.  Had a credit card stolen once.  Got all the money back in 48 hours.  Never had checks stolen, but I know people that have and that can take forever to get straight.  If somebody is really afraid of theft they would use nothing BUT credit cards.

If you use the game cards and somebody manages to somehow get into your account, the worst they could do was take your in game items and transfer then to another character.  The game card can't be messed with once you enter the info into your account.  They can't cancel and get the money back, or add any more time without buying a card.  Don't load any mods and use a good password and the chances of even you make-believe property being stolen is slim to none.

I can't think of a single reason why anybody would not play WOW because of security concerns.  Now if she was afraid your school work would suffer, then I can see the point.

First they added the hack detector. Now they have added the launcher too, that checks for viruses that may steal your account information. Yes you are safe. More than in any other game.

I'm sure World of Warcraft is about as safe as most other online games. If you want to practice good security procedures, do the following: 1. Never share your account information with anyone, save a parent, ,and 2. Change your password often.

The dweebs at Vanguard, a game that won't even launch are the morons doing stuff like that. They are angry their game won't launch because WoW will release an expansion right as their pathetic game comes out. Vanguard will collapse due to having no players. except the 5 they manage to steal from EQ plus their patheitc 10,000 posters fanbois.

if you get hacked or anything like that they just temporarily close your account until the real owner gives them enough proof that satisfies them.

Good to know you're a straight A student.  I'm 100% sure after you bought WOW and get into it, you'll be a straight F student.
