Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn: Letter From the Producer #45 Published

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The forty-fifth installment of the Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Letter from the Producer has been published on the official forums. The short note re-announces the projected summer 2013 release and early June Beta 3 event and includes several screenshots.

Our second important announcement was that phase 3 will start at the beginning of June. Phase 3 will include a multitude of changes based on feedback from the first and second phases, as well as the long-awaited commencement of PlayStation 3 testing. But that's not all—we're also adding Ul'dah and Limsa Lominsa, nearly one hundred new FATE encounters, four additional dungeons, main scenario quests up to level 20, grand companies, provisioning missions, free companies; we're making revisions to the battle system, testing the transfer of characters from version 1.0—the list goes on and on. I've been working around the clock, double and triple checking everything along the way, so sit tight and phase 3 will be here before you know it!

You guys are really getting on the ball with these announcements.  I typically check these things out several times a day, but you beat me to it this time.

    ;)

Due to frequent travel in my youth, English isn't something I consider my primary language (and thus I obtained quirky ways of writing).  German and French were always easier for me despite my family being U.S. citizens for over a century.  Spanish I learned as a requirement in school, Japanese and Korean I acquired for my youthful desire of anime and gaming (and also work now).  I only debate in English to help me work with it (and limit things).  In addition, I'm not smart enough to remain fluent in everything and typically need exposure to get in the groove of things again if I haven't heard it in a while.  If you understand Mandarin, I know a little, but it has actually been a challenge and could use some help.

Also, I thoroughly enjoy debates and have accounts on over a dozen sites for this.  If you wish to engage in such, please put effort in a post and provide sources -- I will then do the same with what I already wrote (if I didn't) as well as with my responses to your own.  Expanding my information on a subject makes my stance either change or strengthen the next time I speak of it or write a thesis.  Allow me to thank you sincerely for your time.

Havent played a decent FF chapter in many many years now..
Iam not sure how AAR will pan out, altough iam interested, i dont want to spend money on mmo #13454312 that fails.

Is there any1 in beta that can explain a few details about the game ?
Particular things i would like to know is:

#1. Can you level solo if you want trough the game ? yes i know grouping will bring benefits, but i also like to chill out solo once in awhile and do stuff on my own :)

#2. How is the crafting ? my wife always like to craft stuff :)

#3. Are there any old FF vets who played the old tittles and can say with a straight face that AAR will give us epic moments (Aeris death) for example ?

#4. Will AAR have raids open world and dungeon style ?

Would realy like to have some expirienced vets scooling me some good info, in the end FF have always been something special, but the latest games of SE where a shadow of what it once was :)

    Many thanks in advance ^^

The game is still under NDA so I am unable to tell you anything but what is publically available.

Here's the Theme Song of FFXIV:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxQIciJWx9g

(Turn annotations on with that video)

#1  Might be able to as it would be odd to remake an entire game to fit the tastes of the masses if said masses were unable to at least do some stuff on their own schedule

#2  The crafting in 1.0 was long and tedious, but also one of the most rewarding of any MMO.  It was meaningful and you could pretty much sell anything you made since it was so difficult (in terms of how long it took) to level up.  You also could repair other people's armor and insert Materia into equipment if you had the skill to make said item.

#3 It does have some pretty epic moments.  Though that's just speaking from 1.0 experience.

Here's six hours of cutscenes from Version 1.0:

    http://www.twitch.tv/thaze_tv/b/338928300

It really isn't a spoiler as you will no longer be able to access those quests, as A Realm Reborn takes place years after 1.0.

Here's the ending of 1.0 (it's the ending to the above stories, so if you intend to watch the six hours of cutscenes, you might want to save this last).

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39j5v8jlndM

It has character you know from playing the game, as well as those cutscenes.  It was a big surprise what happened, and a lot of people were like "OOOOOOLD MAAAAAAAAN!"  when they saw what occurred at the end.

    It also had some humor:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btgElRhD138

... Thirty minutes of that guy, if you enjoyed that video:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxVNiK19wyQ

    Also Moogles:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q13FHaHUlLs

    The last cinematic is this:

    http://www.youtube.com/user/FINALFANTASYXIV

It's the same as the ending (still spoilers if you intend to watch the cutscenes), but with an additional three minutes of content showcasing the start of the new realm.

Here's a boss within 1.0 and the cutscenes they gave her (including her introduction just before you battle her).

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztsHP3RnMvU

This is pretty much what the entirety of the game was like once they got their stuff together and fixed most of it's initial issues.  To date it was one of my most favorite MMO experiences -- the hard work you had to put into it and the story and community that came with it.

#4  It should have raids and dungeons as well as other things such as Chocobo Raising, Chocobo Farms, your own houses to build and decorate, Gold Saucer, Chocobo combat partners, and quite a bit of story.  That's just the tip of the iceberg, though.  Their FATE system will likely have world bosses, but the only thing spoke of in public are the roaming primals whereby you have to hunt them down with your Free Company and then go on a quest if and when you defeat them.  Though this hasn't been spoken much of since Yoshi talked about it last year.  It's supposed to affect the weather world wide when someone completes it.

I think the exciting thing about XIV ARR is how it plays out on PS3 and probably PS4. Naoki Yoshida has been talking about this quite a bit in the media, and by the looks of it XIV ARR could be the best fantasy console RPG to hit the consoles over next few years. Looks very promising at this stage.

ARR is really stepping up their game from 1.0 and showing what a real polished MMO is supposed to look like for which I'm glad.

Unlike the Ultima-looking graphics of Neverwinter or the game-breaking bugs and content empty wasteland Defiance has.

Funny thing is they've been doing this for what, 13 years with FFXI. They're also one of the few game companies that throws everyone together on the same group of servers, even going so far as to offer auto-translation of certain important phrases.

    Now with 57.3% more flames!

They actually have regional servers this time around (with the release of A Realm Reborn).

I'm not sure.  Though I doubt they will regionlock, so you might be able to play on any regional server you'd like.  There tended to be a fair amount of lag a times when Primal fights were first introduced due to there being a worldwide server.  Some had problems avoiding Ifrit's fire, so this helps to address / prevent that from being a possibility.

I guess we'll see. I don't care if they have region locked servers, but I hope they give me a choice in the matter.

Also, the servers in 1.0 were complete and utter shit regardless of where they were physically located, and their shittiness likely played a much larger role in things like menu lag, positional lag, ability lag etc. than where they were located.

the only thing that bothered me from FFXIV 1.0 was the UI system and XI leveling system (the Solo-abliity).  Everything else i didn't mind really. Oh and AH was fucking bad too.

FFXIV just didn't have anything that made FFXI great, and it just had nothing really to offer.  Perhaps its just a change of the times that really did this push but the game just had nothing to really excite. Why play FFXIV when i can play FFXI which, sure its old, but the classes gave a strong appeal and combat was slow but offered a sense of some tactics and thought behind it unlike the new iteration?

A major change would need to be done to the core gameplay mechanics or class system to really make me interested in paying for and investing time in the game. So far it just doesn't do any of that.

I will say the cinematic for the closing looked sick at the very least.

  • RalstlinRalstlin Member UncommonPosts: 234

There will be regional servers, but you can choose which server do you want to play. The only restriction are for 1.0 Players, some servers will be exclusive for new characters (Fresh servers) so old characters from 1.0 cant choose these servers at release. New characters can be created on all servers.

These people who ask why FFXIV is not similar gameplay of FFXI... why Square-Enix would make a game to steal players from FFXI to FFXIV? they want players on Tera, SWTOR, Rift, WoW, etc to leave these games and come to FFXIV...

Steal to yourself is a little.. stupid.

The release was a catastrophe for sure, but the game became very much playable by the time they started asking for a monthly fee.  I'd even say it was much better than FFXI was, especially if we;re looking at the Abyssea content.  The Grand Company Story was interesting and persistent, groups were required to do most everything of worth, and just about everything took time and effort as opposed to be handed stuff up front.  It very much reminded me of FFXI when it was first released in the west, only with several improvements (while also being held back by a lousy engine, which was it's major downside).

The poor launch was a definite problem, and despite it's focus on party play towards the end and not making things "casual", not a lot of people came back to support such systems.  It just seems that the majority want games that have instant gratification and not be forced into groups to do the most efficient content.

Okay well first of all that is not really what happened when Yoshida took over, 1.18-1.23 was not a testing phase to see if "group and hardcore/FFXI style" content would be supported by players.  Also a lot of people did come back, and they eventually paid subscriptions for the game.  But all of this happened after ARR was announced and all of the stuff we now find in ARR was outlined.

Literally 1.18-1.23 had nothing to do with changing their core design direction they laid it out very clearly when they announced 2.0.

Also 1.18-1.23 not being for casual players?  I disagree with that, it had tons of casual friendly content.  The introduction of quests, low level dungeons, complete overhaul of the stupid guildleve system, exp, lowering the overall time to level, simplifying tons of systems that players complained were needlessly complicated etc.

It just also brought us "real" endgame content for the first time, and we are getting more in ARR.  We are getting actual 24 person raids, more primals etc.  All designed to be as hard or harder than 1.x, but designed on what this team considers a better system with more mechanics available meaning the fights should be much more complex in terms of what they can introduce w/o the limitations of the 1.0 client.

Noooooot really sure where this came from.  Was just responding to a comment and making light comments about the game.  Though I guess it's my fault for not writing a couple pages on the intricacies of things so nobody would feel the need to try and correct something that needed no rectification.

Most everything I said that was controversial had a quote save for the comment "most everything of -worth-" requiring a party (which is pretty much true, especially since I didn't say "all").  No where did I say it didn't have some solo friendly system.  I also mentioned "not a lot of people" came back, and that is still, in fact true.  Actually, the game barely had half the amount of people playing it than when it was free to play once it went to a monthly fee.  So technically, no matter how you interpreted what was written, what I wrote was correct.

Also trying to find where I said the main focus was to get people back in the current game or test the waters for party play (see previous paragraph).  This whole response just seems to be pure rhetoric and not based on anything that was actually written ( /sadface).  But I guess the last comment, which was intended to be a general statement on the matter, could lead someone into believing something that wasn't there to begin with.  So if that's the case, it's my own articulation and presentation that is partly to blame on the matter.

This game is basically World of Final Fantasy.

It clumps up different things from different MMORPGs with slow "strategic" combat system and ability to switch around jobs/classes with one character including different crafting classes.

The game itself is far from revolutionary but it just might get a decent playerbase outside Japan aswell.

Big plus is that it's the first MMORPG release in awhile where you don't have any sort of cash shop just the monthly subscription.
