I like the bits of steampunk theme in this game Jet Packs/Vehicles

This is the kind of stuff i like about asian fantasy settings is that they add some form of technology like airships and such just like in the single player final fantasy games.

I don't mind the steampunk either, and it kinda grows on you after awhile. But I know those cars have been very conversational, and will probably bring in some heated debate around here.

For those that don't know the cars are racing cars, and are only used for the race track. It's kinda like Mario Kart. So no they are not true mounts.

Here is a test drive on the racing track.

Why would you add racecars to a fantasy game?

They could at least have given it a 'steam-driven' sound effect.

    That's only the beginning :D

There's alot of things "wrong" in the genre-ethical sense, like tractors, scuba-gear, modern swimwear, bikinis, hawaii-shorts, modern sunglasses etc.

And it's Korean, asian fantasy is rarely as the west considers 'Fantasy-norm'

AA was never meant to be the regular middle age fantasy game, from the start it was more of a steampunk-fantasy orientated MMO.

Well hawaii shorts and modern sunglasses are even beyond steampunk.

Still first closed beta info / footage looked more like late medieval/reneissance themed fantasy.

Guess shame on me for not realizing that ArcheAge will go Aion way.   Wasted time following this game.  Guess it's still better to realize it now.  My last post here as I am not gonna play this game anymore. Yes setting, world coherence and my personal taste is that important to mee  Have fun in this game though if you can.

    "Steampunk" is sorely misunderstood.

For me it is entirely it own genera, and doesn't actually "mesh" into other fantasy, but that is just me.

Even if steampunk was the look they were going for (which the rest of their world doesn't follow), those cars do not look steam punk. They look like 1940s racers.

I'm okay with some element of Industrial Advancement in my Fantasy MMO's.

This is nothing new to the genre; Warhammer has it, Warcraft has it, I especially like the take on it that GW2 with the Asura & Charr. But there are certain things that just don't "fit" into the settings devs create for their games.

Now I'm no expert on ArcheAge, and I'll admit I was only loosely following its development, but this just ruins the whole feel of the game I had in mind.

Looks like this is another Asian MMO I'm going to have to pass on. Shame really...

Well, bring on Black Desert then, I guess?

I'm strongly attracted to sandbox games, but these Steampunk/anachronistic elements in AA are a dagger in my heart too. And the perceived 'immersion' factor I'm mentally assigning the game is nearing zero. That's not to say that I'm sure right now that I won't be playing. But just that the possibility is becoming a more real one.

However I know that lots of people love this stuff. Maybe even a majority? Or at least a majority of Asians. So I don't think it's right to cry foul. And we purists should probably just shut our yaps and move on (into the ever more bitter winter). After all, we still have Smedley to pin our hopes on don't we!

I don't even like when Fantasy/magic-based games include guns...

Because swashbuckling with swords only occurs between musket reloads once you have guns/cannons.

I feel if you have guns you are post-fantasy setting - period. If not, no guns please.

    Always hated that.

Cars and other black powder/gas/combustion etc. type technologies completely replace fantasy elements.

I love steampunk myself, however, they chucked in two little pieces and the rest is fantasy... just doesn't feel right.  If it was marketed as a complete steampunk game and had a more steampunk feel to the world then sure that works in my book.

I like the racing cars - looks like a fun mini-game.

I remember being excited when I saw the race track & cars in WoW (Shimmering Flats, desert near Thousand Needles).  I was very disappointed that players couldn't actually drive any of them - just watch NPC's race around, boo!

Those cars aren't steam-punk themed at all though.  They do look out of place but if it is just restricted to one area I don't think it would be a deal breaker.

I'm with you on this 100%, because I feel the same way.   I don't harbor ill will to those that do like this sort of thing, I personally just do not like it.   It is too bad that this game is heading down that road because I was an avid fan of it.   I could deal with the tractor thingy because it wasn't over the top and was more steam-punkish to me, and wasn't a main mount.   The cars on the other hand - so yeah...I think I am just going to pass on this game.    :(
