Only because with it being P2P it is a great game to not play, if not subbed.
I bought the game and expansion, and subbed for a month, but did not get around to play. Other things came up, and I did not stop playing because it was rubbish, just did not have the time for it. Now it is F2P I can play for a bit, and if I get sucked in and play solidly, may even sub again, but if other things crop up then don't have to worry about wasting $15 again when I do not get a chance to play it.
Trion Worlds has announced that Rift will be going free to play beginning June 12, 2013.

You maybe an exception to the case, but people shouldn't be claiming its not worth a sub, they should of been saying its not worth my time. Either a game is rubbish or its not, these players saying great now I can play it are 2 faced. (with exception to minors who don't have an income).
Rift was a solid game and I played it for a few months, but the horrible macro system quite ruined it for me. Its not good to be able to bind your whole damage rotation to 1 button.
Also the quests in Rift are a step back into the last century. After TSW, SWTOR or GW2, this system is outdated and not very motivating for me.
Anyway, Trion is doing a good job with Rift (quite the contrary compared to Defiance, which is still a mess 2 months after release)
The model looks pretty decent, nothing gated with unlocks, yes I'm looking at you SWTOR and a reputable dev team that actually interacts with the players.
I've been playing RiFT since beta and it's one hell of a good game, If you want a classic MMORPG look no further. I just hope the updates continue as they have been and don't dwindle and become trivial.
Rift is hardly a classic MMORPG...it released in like 2010 and us a WoW Clone...a classic MMORPG is like DAOC or FFXI.

Rift is the epitome of today's MMORPG and the direct opposite of classic. Designed to be a game first and foremost with little emphasis on the virtual world aspect. And from november 2012 to June 2013 is 7 months. So a major update every 7 months, and you want things to continue as they have been?
November was actually an expansion, RiFT is regularly updated with content and weekly hotfixes so yes I want it to continue, so before talking nonsense please do some research first
If they keep it like this I'll be more than happy.
You posted a content update that contains:
An event that happened a year prior, with a few minor things changed.
Tier 3 of PA that was on the PTR in march 2011
Tier 2 of PA PvP - the only thing that was really new, but Ill wager it was developed along with t1 PvP PA anyway.
So in the 7 months since Storm Legion the only updates have been year old content and stuff that was held back from SL release to stagger the content a little (the chronicle and raid in 2.1, and at least the raid was advertised on the SL box)
I don't normally post, and this is not meant to be anything but an FYI (not criticizing anyone) but I felt the need to let ppl know that its not only the minors who don't have an income for playing subbed games. I am disabled and on my fixed income there isn't enough of a leeway to afford subbed games. I know a number of other disabled ppl who like me, do the majority of the socializing through online games.
Again this is not meant to be used to stir up a ruckus.

Thanks for sharing amithist and adding some levity to an emotional subject for some (fear of being scammed seems to be at the heart of it). You can add in carers, housewife's and husbands and anyone who may have a bit of time on their hands but a lack of funds to the list. I've just started a well paid job so I can afford to throw some cash at the games I enjoy and if that enable you and others to have a game to play then its all good. Though don't be scared of many around here they are all bark and no bite most of the time.

Wow. They are being pretty free with the content. I wonder how quickly we can get someone complaining about F2P ruining the industry in this thread.
Did I win? The problem with F2P is simply that with subscription models, devs were only concerned with making a game fun enough so everyone would keep playing, when you have a store, those devs are constantly worried about how to sell you stuff so if you buy them you have fun.
It changes the entire feeling of a game. If you DON'T buy anything you quit because of all the grind and monotony, if you DO buy stuff you feel like a fool. Games tend to live shorter now and they have to go to f2p quicker and they spend less on initial development.

F2P is a lose-lose proposition.
