MMO with a "true" Thief/Rogue Class

delakdelak Member UncommonPosts: 25

Hello Everyone.

I am not sure this MMO is out there but I thought I would ask all of you. I am looking for an MMO that has a "true" Thief/Rogue class. What I mean by true is that the thief has the ability to do the following:

  • find/disarm traps: In dungeons, on doors, on chests (both big ones and small ones you can have in your inv.)
  • pick locks (doors, chests, etc..)
  • pick pockets (real pick pockets, taking actual stuff from an NPC or Player, not some small special loot table)
  • stealth
  • backstab of some kind

I have been thinking about Gemstone III and the Thieves in that game, we had a good time, with abilities that others sought out. I remember sitting in towers picking the locks of chests (for a fee of course) of other players. Or stealing their stuff in town. Are their any MMOs like that?

It can be old, new, 3d, 2d, f2p, p2p, b2p, etc....

Thanks

    Skyrim?

Honestly can't think one that's an MMO.

Hello man, I am not sure how is the actual status of the rogue sistem in DDO (dungeons & dragons online)

But as far as I played in the start of the game, the rogues were able to discover and disarm traps, hidden devices to find out alternate ways and not sure about pick pockets.

But perhaps that's one of the mmo's which belong to your requests.

    Kind regards.

There are two MMO's that have a rogue/thief with all of the abilities you described.

World of Warcraft and Dungeons and Dragons Online.

    No pick pockets in DDO.
  • Mors.MagneMors.Magne Member UncommonPosts: 1,549

Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) Online has traps that thieves can disarm.

I suspect that D&D online might have 'pushed the envelope' for roleplaying a thief further than any other game.

I think it's possible to try this game for free.

I don't think there is one that allows you to pick pockets and locks the way you want it to. There are plenty of mmos that include the rest that you mentioned...

The ONLY one that comes in mind is DDO. I mean the rogues there are really necessary and do have role other than DPS.

Thanks everyone so far for all the responses. I have played DDO before and it wasn't bad for Thieves but I had issues with the rest of DDO to keep playing it.

Any other suggestions from anyone? Keep them coming.

I am big fan of rogue/thief gameplay, and I play in any RPG that I can.

Unfortunatelly in MMO rogue = Assasin... which is really not the point.

There is only one MMO that actually features what you stated and its DDO

All else is just pumped up damage dealer.

Even Neverwinter rogue is nothing else.

Yeah that seems to be what I have been finding as well. Do you know of any upcoming mmo's that might fit the bill. Maybe Elder Scrolls Online or something?

DDO has most of what you are looking for except the pick pockets part but no social game is going to support that.  That's a griefers wet dream kind of feature.

Dude you have to play nwn1 or nwn2 persistent worlds to get such experience or private uo server which i cannot name.

Games todays are for 10year boys

    Ultima Online

    • Snooping
    • Stealing/Pickpocket
    • Hiding/Stealth
    • Disguise kits
    • Setting/Disarming traps
    • Poison (can be applied to weapons, traps or food)

On my server of choice you can choose poison type and you can BACKSTAB from stealth making massive damage and bleeding :) but still i guess pnp roleplay nwn server is what he would like as ass or thief or whatewher he choose to do :)
  • delakdelak Member UncommonPosts: 25
I would have to try and dig out my nwn2 discs. I have thought about that but wasn't sure they were still had running servers.

I will look into go they do have a good thief skill list however I thought UO was a grief fest

It all looks awesome and is what I am looking for.. however I hate that I need to hack at dummies or macro for hours to get skills up just to leave the starting town. That to me is just boring, why cant I improve my skills by actually using them out in the world.

As for NWN or NWN2, they also have the skills and play I am looking for but 60 people max per persistent server is not for me. I like to solo, but I like the idea of more people on to give the world more life and the possibility of grouping.

Any other suggestions? I have been doing a lot of research and most of the main stream games dont have all of what I want. But I am not sure of the gems in the rough games, or indie games.

    Your lookin at

WoW (Sub rogue would be what you really want, or assassination)

    Rift

    .....MapleStory =]

Neverwinter......kinda, you gotta work your way up to all the abilities.

Thats pretty much it, but your best bet is WoW because its such an old game that they have had a lot of time to perfect the rogue class. I am personally a Rogue lover. When i start a new game i go straight for thief, assassin or rogue. Also with WoW transmog you can make your rogue look how ever you want. But vanilla Rogues were a little bit more immersive because you had to make your poison, it was like an RP factor.

I would like an mmo with assassins creed gameplay for rogue classes
  • TamanousTamanous Member RarePosts: 3,030

I'm not huge fan of the engine and feel of combat but one of very best rogue classes I have ever tried in a game is the Burglar in Lotro.

I love how it isn't a pure dps class and relies heavily on it's rogue-like abilities and has a unique roll in groups. You actually feel like a rogue instead of a glass dps canon with little other purpose.

Of course the greatest rogue of all time is from D&D which is why DDO's rogue class still is based on it's utility over dps. Sadly Neverwinter is based off of 4e D&D rules which is a complete and total crap tabletop mini system (which drove ALL of their classic D&D fans off to join Pathfinder) Wotc created to try sell more mini's and port to computer games. Any class from that is nothing more than an uninspired trinity based class system with little to no role play utility.

The classic rogue in rpg games is nearly entirely based upon it's skills and utility but adapting them to the trinity for mmos has typically gutted their concept and turned them into what you see in Wow which is a sad attempt at making a real rogue.

    You stay sassy!

Assassin with nearly perfect invisibility (not stealth), in a lot of cases.

It's just a flavor thing though, Tom's-a-Twit was already playing his thieves that way clear back in 1982...Drow, usually.  ":sigh: No Tom, you really can't successfully stealth through open countryside on a bright, sunny day." "But I rolled already!"

Might as well remark on the penchant for names containing "Dark" "Silent" "Shadow" "Stab" or some variant :P

Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

Maybe I missed something during my reading and brief game play, could you provide some detail and/or point me to a location that does have that detail. A lot of what I read is that you need to get skills up to a certain level before you even try to get out of town and the only way to do that is to macro and/or do something with dummies.

Id suggest Wizardry Online, its something SIMILAR in what youre looking for, but most mmos require slashy killy for leveling, reducing the real point in rogues, the only other game was what the first response said and that was Morrowind throught Skyrim.
  • MyownGodMyownGod Member UncommonPosts: 205

Forget World of warcraft, they don't have unlocking doors and disarming traps for all I know but sure is fun to play as a Rogue.

Forget Skyrim, cause its a single player game.

Dungeon and dragons online how ever (Not neverwinter), they put serious thought about each class capability and interactions to the environment, like thief they can unlock doors that others can't, they can sense and disarm traps. Magic user can focus on unlocking magic barriers and etc.

Hence I assume DnDo would be the perfect one for you.

  • furbansfurbans Member UncommonPosts: 968
It's either DDO or none at all.  DDO is the only MMO that has ever incorporated the Rogue class the way it should.  If DDO wasn't your thing then forget about finding an MMO with a real Rogue class.
