Hi,
I'd just like to mention a negative trend which I've noticed from other games. After DAoC I've never seen an MMO, or even any other RPG that actually worked with evolving spell and style effects. Instead, they just gave you spell x or y at some point and from there on you could enjoy the animation for ever and ever. Some animations were fine, some were crap. However, the whole idea was just dull in my opinion, especially since most of these games also mirrored their classes, making things even worse.
In terms of immersion this is a complete bummer. It just doesn't make sense to have an awesome looking ability hit for 5 damage, just because you only 'learned' it, and then after time the exact same visual effect is now 100 times stronger... I mean sure, ok, great, but I still feel like I'm doing the same old ability, and it got boring by now, even though it finally got powerful.
What I liked so much in DAoC is that when you leveled you didn't necessarily get new types of spells or abilities, but could get similar, newer and stronger versions of your older abilities that actually looked more awesome as well!
Stuff like this really made me look forward to progressing my character and becoming more powerful more than a lot of other stuff to be quite honest. What do you guys feel about this? I hope at least in CU they will re-implement this!
PS: Oh and don't even get me started on fucking castbars and damage numbers floating on-screen, there's no words for how immersion-breaking those things are...

Though i agree it can also create a problem. If a higher "ranking" spell/combo has a much longer animation or takes too long to complete and the damage/effect isnt significantly higher or the resource requirement is alot higher then it might not be worth it.
That exact thing happened in age of conan where higher ranking moves had different and longer animations and it was not worth it in pvp. Most people used the lower ranked versions because they were much quicker. Funcom ended up redesigning and combining the animations to many of the their spells/combos ranks.
