You sir, you nailed it.
I guess their business strategy:-
I remember when they gave beta keys out for forsaken world in this site and none was able to play a few years ago.
This time there were emails and what not advertised here to sell the Founder's pack.
I wonder what will be the strategy the next time.
They however launch their game exactly when there are not many games around and that does the trick I guess.
Over-hyping and too much advertisement sells much these days.

Its probably just me but it appears that you have absolutely ZERO knowledge on how to run a MMORPG. You have no idea what costs are involved in the development and upkeep of a game like Neverwinter as do most people who bash games that have Cash Shop's. There are 3 ways to keep a game going either P2P, Freemium(P2P with some F2P and a Cash Shop) or F2P and rely on a Cash Shop. Without these options MMORPG's will never last. The Costs of keeping the servers up and running with hardware and operating system costs puts the monthly upkeep at $4 - $5 Mill range. YOu then have the Developer Computers that need to be kept up to date, the developer salaries, office space, office supplie. Plus you have the start up cost which(according to Microsoft) starts at $40 Million. So please tell me how a small time developer like PWE can keep a game like Neverwinter F2P running WITHOUT the use of a cash shop.
"Possibly we humans can exist without actually having to fight. But many of us have chosen to fight. For what reason? To protect something? Protect what? Ourselves? The future? If we kill people to protect ourselves and this future, then what sort of future is it, and what will we have become? There is no future for those who have died. And what of those who did the killing? Is happiness to be found in a future that is grasped with blood stained hands? Is that the truth?"
Point Taken.
But Don't you have any other way but to make it launch and then make it so pay to win that you actually lose your player base within a few days? There are ample ways to generate revenue. I played dragon nest SEA and cherry credits is doing a wonderful job. I really think this straight model of abusing the game into a pay to win and selling an unfinished product with beta is not a very ethical practice.

PWE is hardly small time, they have 14 games listed on their site including the highly successful Torchlight.
You want to see a failed launch? Ignore Neverwinter and look at Vanguard Saga of Heroes created by Sigil Games hosted by Sony Online Entertainment. The game went through 2 stages of Beta Testing to be release as the buggiest piece of software since WinME. Compare to that Neverwinter is relatively finished. Im not saying Neverwinter could do with some more testing because it definitely does. What I am saying is that to bash a game that isnt even live while ignoring games that are live and 100 times more unstable and buggy is foolishness.

I did pay them $60, but I do mind paying a bit more if the game is not really worth it. If PWI is looking for real money then the services should be of that standard too. Client crashes , memory leaks , too many exploits, launching a game under beta to answer all the sides of an unfinished product with little to nothing at end game, this is surely a way to cheat the player community and score a bad name.
I did pay and play many other F2P models but why is it always PWI and it's cash shop models that actually hurt the player base and their wallet so much? Time and again new ways of fooling your player base might be very disturbing in years to come is what I feel.

I love how you point out 1 minor thing in what I am saying to try to prove wrong while ignoring everything else.

If that was the case , why did you guys sell the founder's pack, why didn't you guys went through a bit more beta at a way reduced xp rate and kept your complete game away from a proper launch when players will be paying to get the other part of the game, why didn't you let the player base be aware of the cash shop and it's huge impact at the end game?
Come on, you knew you were just going to play a swift $ snatching ploy and it did work. But will it be every-time?

I love how you assume that I payed for a founders pack. I make a point as to why a cash shop is needed to keep a F2P MMO running and all you can talk about is rehashed myths and biased subjective opinions on why people shouldnt play the game.

Hi there lil PWE fan boy. The cash shop isn't the problem. The cost of everything on the cash shop is the problem ($6 to respec your skills, Feats are a separate cost). Features that were intact in close beta have been taken out and marked as "coming soon" (Improving pets past level 15, forcing you to buy a pet from the cash shop if you want a decent pet). Lets not even get into the cash currency being tied directly into the auction house.
yeah, you should work on that IQ problem you have before coming back. Thanks though.
The game is F2P and anyone can play. I just wish someone made me aware and did not make me waste $60 on this trash.

It's a shame neither of you have any idea what you are talking about though. The OP might have been able to make a point, but all he did was just whine.
Since when is Tuesday a direction?
That was a really poor comparison.
I realize you're deliberately pointing to one of the worst examples of a P2P launch you can think of with the intent of making NW's launch look "so much better". Common tactic. See it all the time. However, context matters, and in this case, Vanguard's situation is not even the same ballpark.
Vanguard's entire development was a portrait of a train-wreck in motion.
Vanguard was pushed out the the door despite not being ready. Things were buggy, unfinished and just plain missing because of all the problems in development, and all the chaos going on with Sigil.
The case with Neverwinter, per the OP's post, is not even remotely the same. From what they're saying, it seems they made certain things available in Beta, and then decided to lock them up, presumably to place them behind a cash shop at launch.
And really, PWE does have a reputation as being one of the most overtly greedy F2P companies out there. That's nothing new. It's been known for years. I saw it back when Perfect World the game was still new.
Minor? They have 14 games !!!
Nobody likes their games, everyone hates them as a company. They're about as nefarious as Nexon except Nexon's ruining higher quality games than PWE has.
