As many reports say, there is a high numer of people suffering from depression among the hard core MMORPG players. Very often, playing such games turns into an obsession. Furthermore, the virtual worlds that MMORPGs represent are a way to escape from reality. What do you think?
Comments
yes, I think were depressed... from the lack of good games on the market.
Release a good game, or ill cut myself!! ILL DO IT, IM CRAZY!!!
Ok... but seriously. I think the people who do get depressed... need to take a chill pill and come back to reality. There arent any games worth being depressed about... get a life
I believe that the most common case is that depressed ppl turn to gaming, not that the gaming itself causes the depression.
I would draw a line between MMORPG's and depression - not a neccessary reason for playing MMORPG's neither i think playing MMORPG's really causes depression
But
In some cases MMORPG's could be seen as form of ESCAPISM. They are virtual worlds that give you virtual reality and virtual society - completely diferent from the one you are living in.
ESCAPISM - although it have been fuel for many art creations over the history - is form of depression
Also talking for personal example - i like to play games to relax - or perhaps when being depressed. Especially MMORPGS....
So in a way there is a connection - although i would say it is positive and therapeutic one

Sometimes when I get the blues I like to clean the house. It makes me feel better. Does that mean that maids are all depressed?
No
But it could mean you have Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder.
Ah...
And maids dont clean houses for fun ( or to fight the blues) , its their job

When i was down i stopped with gaming and went to bars all the time lol , now that i am over it i am starting to game again , but not as much as i used to , there is alot to see in the world
That isn't what causes depression. You turn to the game as an escape. Unfortunatly for people who are depressed, most times they don't even know it. Alot of depressed people seem happy in every day life, the simptomes come more from thier out of work activites rather then their moods in public.
Pretty much anytime someone tells you something like " I play games all the time because that's all I want to do" They probably have a problem and don't even know it. The worst part of having a freind or family member who's like that is, there's little you can do to help them untill they want it.
Your mind is like a parachute, it's only useful when it's open.
Don't forget, you can use the block function on trolls.
I think it's because MMORPG's is the only genre, that was
designed for players to become really attached to their characters.
Just like me.
I wouldn't mind if my 5 month old character in Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind gets deleted,
but I would get really pissed if my 5 month old character in a MMORPG gets deleted.
(misses iROSE)
Once I introduced MMORPG's to my friends in school,
Ive noticed alot of fighting between each other.
One was saying that he was going to block & delete someone in MSN,
for not returning an item..
MMORPG's are really eviiiillllll..

Seriously, my aunt found out her son was getting drunk and playing FFXI. I laughed when I found out. I wanted to smack the kid around.
Who drinks and plays MMOs? I mean seriously...go outside, people. *Note* the comment "go outside, people" is to those who feel the need to get drunk and play games, not to ALL MMOers.
I've been MMOing for a looooong time. Going on about 8 years now. I can honestly say I've never once felt the desire to drink and game. At most I'll have ONE drink, and that's just when I'm ready to relax and head to bed.
Don't Drink and Dri....err Play MMO's!!
Hi! My name is paper. Nerf scissors, rock is fine.

mm It's probably that he didn't really want to drink and play,
People just feel the need to stay on their com when playing a MMORPG.
As alot of people eat during when their playing an MMO.
Though it's pretty hilarious that he turned up drunk doing so when playing xD
Ninja, it's not that she found a 6 pack of beer in his room...I mean she found bottles upon bottles of hard liquor stashed everywhere. Under his bed, in the closet. They were empty. He wasn't just casually drinking a beer or something. He's also underage. He was swiping the alcohol from his brother. His brother throws huge parties for his college friends, and they always have tons of alcohol left over. He'd swipe it from them while they weren't home or something.
I'll drink a Smirnoff just because it tastes good and helps me sleep. He was drinking things like Vodka, Jager and the like. Completely emptying the bottles. I'm not saying emptying them all at once, just saying...the found a good number of bottles completely empty.
It's one thing to eat, I eat and play too. But I'm not playing a round of "Take a shot if a Troll attacks you."
Smirnoff is company that produces vodka. So you are drinking vodka aswell

I think you are completely right. Who here dosnt play mmos just to get away from the world and
relax (although sometimes playing a mmo can get really frustrating when there is a terrible community ). Although I play mmos a lot but I have never gotten depressed from playing one nor is it the reason that I play them.
I have been on twice daily medication since I was 18 months old ( I'm 46 now ). Without it I would probably have died whilst still a child.
For many years I have also been on pills for depression.
I get depressed because I can't lead an active, normal life due to my basic ill health, simple as that.
I play MMORPG's.
So yes, I'm a depressive who spends a lot of time living in a virtual world.
But it isn't the game that's to blame. If anything the games help to keep me going by providing me with a world where I can interact with other people on an equal footing.
I don't have to say I can't join in because I might collapse from over exertion and need carting off in an ambulance.
I don't have to put up with bleeding heart do gooders asking me in a low voice if I'm feeling OK every few minutes.
In short, I can round out my reality thanks to virtuality.
I'm sure that some video game hater could argue that the games arn't helping me, or are indeed making the situation worse.
The trouble is that they are always the same type of person who claims that playing DOOM turns you into a psycopath, watching porn turns you into a rapist and reading Harry Potter novels turns you into a satanist.
Seems to me that it is the genuinly disturbed who claim that the rest of us have problems.
Right, I'm off to wash down a handfull of pills with a pint of Gin, sacrifice the neighbours dog to the Dark Lord and get to work designing a pornographic FPS about a boy wizard
Drinking and playing mmo's..blazing and playing mmo's whats the big deal?
if you enjoy getting drunk and playing go ahead.
Think about this
people go to bars/pubs to get drunk with random people hoping that someone gets
drunk enough to sleep with them and thats not pathetic why?
Psy. I never said going to a bar getting drunk just to get laid wasn't pathetic. Actually, I think it IS pathetic, also.
So I'm not sure what the point of that statement really was.
The point was that he's an underage, drinking large amounts of alcohol, and alone. Yes, you're alone while playing MMOs. If you were to drink too much Argnon1028 is not going to call an ambulance from 2000 miles away.
Also, from what I've learned of alcoholism, drinking alone can contribute a good deal.
yes I think if you play too much it can have effects. I think it is important to have time for other activities and more importantly having time to yourself. Playing a mmorpg hardcore removes that time, and additionally you no longer play to play the game. You play it to escape and to make yourself feel better which inevitably will make you feel depressed when you no longer have the urge to play the game.
where all different; so we have different points off view...
but they must be something roung since persons, have died from hadcore gaming mmos over some days...
