Today we're lucky to bring you the first half of an interview with Michael Rowland, the Community Manager for RF Online, as well as three exclusive screenshots of the game. Check back on Wednesday for the second half of this interview.
MMORPG.com: It seems these days as though every new game is trying something different in terms of levels. What can you tell us about the leveling system of your game?
Michael Zzeno Rowland: As I briefly explained above, you can make your character unique to you by the way you engage in combat to the way you play the game in general. The traditional kill monster A to gain experience is still here, though you gain experience per attack and not at the end on the final kill shot. Each blow will give you experience.
Depending on the attack method, and skill used you can weight your attack prowess to one specialty or you can mix and match skills. For example, should you be a close combat warrior, you can train your closed combat skill, but also your ranged weapon skill, in essence creating a hybrid class. Though you wont be as powerful as a pure ranger, you will still have a dual class advantage, if you can donate the time to train those particular skills. |

Good stuff, now just have an interview about possible "freebie" closed beta accounts for such honest and valuable fanatics like myself
I love sci-fi games too. and im an avid mmo'er.
I wish I knew more about beta.. Id love to get in. cant wait for this game. swg went down the craphole.
Sounds like there's alot of filler in this interview. Here's a question you can ask which I'm sure everyone desperately wants answered:
"Is there anything to do in this game other than grind to the next level? Is there any crafting system? Resource mining/farming? Player built structures? Pets? Maybe something completely new?"
So the death penalty is 5-20% during pve...
depending on how fast that xp comes, 20% seems a bit much!

I have played in Phil Closed and open beta, and I can answer some of your questions.
Q:Is there anything to do in this game other than grind to the next level?
A:Depends on your level, mine wars happen every 8 hours. If you are below level 25 - 30 you will get killed instantly. So if you are below that level cap, leveling is what you do (both your general level and your skill level). After 30 you can choose to PvP or PvE.
Follow up: Levels come in fairly easy at least for the first 36 levels that I have played though. It is also very important to separate general level and skill level. You can get general level fairly fast, but skill is what you will have to grind.
Q: Is there any crafting system?
A: Yes there is, you mine resources, kill monsters to get other resources (or buy them), click combine button and make things. System is not very complex, think L2 type crafting.
Q:Resource mining/farming?
A: Resource mining, it is all about how much time you willing to invest, and where you deside to mine. You can always mine by your faction teleporter at a very slow rate. If you move out a bit you will get better mining rate. (There is no mining skill so everyone mines at the same rate, and resources dont run out, so there is no competition there).
Q:Pets?
A: No.
Q:Player built structures?
A: Turrets.
Q: Maybe something completely new?
A: Interesting mix of things that we have already seen in other MMOs but nothing revolutenary.
Hope this helps!
Very informative Urza, thank you very much for the detailed response. I've heard alot of negative things about how this game is just another "Korean grinding game", so its nice to hear that this game has a little more depth than how the nay sayers would like to present it.
Very very nice, I like the information given in this, finally a clearcut view of what the classes are and what leveling is supposed to be about (even if it isn't an in depth view, still clearcut :P) Anyway, great to see, can't wait for the game, hope I get into closed beta ^^
That makes about as much sense as it ought to make sense which is that it makes sense for it to not make any sense at all.
As y'all can tell, I am a RF fan. This game is very well developed from the beta tests i conducted although there are some unbalances in the game. Basically, Cora (the elf people) stinks and loses a lot because they aren't popular and really hard to level. Bellato (the human who can drive Mechs) are okay and fairly easy to level as long as you pick the specialist class. The Acretians (cyborgs) are way too powerful because the ranger and warrior classes are super easy to level and with the big honking "Acretian Launcher" just kills the RvR part of the game.
Wish you had asked him the hard question about why they have frozen all of NA and Europe out of the Philippine open beta just recently. Really nasty. Quoted some nebulous CCR territory rights as the excuse. Seemed more then a little bizarre that a FREE beta should have territory rights as no money is involved!!!
When the heck are they going to get around to a NA beta??? After all the Phil version is in English.
I can answer that question right now. Because of all the people from other countries server was always lagged and over populated. That bothered targetted audience, in this case Philippine people. So they got rid of us to please their potential customers. And before you will tell me that you are a potential customer, no you are not, you are a potential customer to Code Masters but not to Level Up Corp who is an official game provider in Phil.
I heard code masters are opening their beta in December. I have a few questions:
Is it an open or closed beta?
Is it for Europe only or also the US?
Does it include the new patches or does it start from the beginning?
Where can I get some good info on the Code Master's RF?
From what I recall they said open beta is in December. I am pritty sure they will include the patches, I am not sure what you mean by Code Master's RF. The game is going to be the same, I dont think any major changes will be made.
Hi all, though I would pop in quickly and thankyou for the kind comments....I ignored the not so kind ones
To answer your questions:
The beta is a closed beta with around 10,000 spots up for grab plus additional spots through competitions running on numerous websites (ahem MMORPG homepage) The response has been huge so we may up those numbers, just don't tell anyone that
The beta is open to all the US and UK guys and everyone is welcomed. Obviously we can't allow people from Korea, China, Taiwan, Philipinnes and Japan in as that goes against the license deal we have with CCR (Developer).
I haven't announced which version of the game we will be hosting yet but it's not the very early launch title.

The game looks and sounds really good. Can't wait for it (and my Beta spot :P)! Love the graphics and the character building system sounds very intriguing. Doesn't sound or look like an L2 clone in anyway at all. Kill stealers are common fact in most MMOs and thus r a part of the game imho.
Losing experience when getting killed SUCKS!
Is that losing XP on that particular kill or overall-xp?
I agree that the death penalty is very dubious. How lazy to make it random too. Death penalty should relate to the nature of the death. If you are low level and get wiped by high level this should be minimum penalty.
This game is trying to be a fantasy Project Entropia. However why the need for classes when all skills can evolve individually?
Don't forget stats. Each class has its own strengths and weaknesses stat-wise. Warriors are stronger and mages have better mind. Same principal. I agree that random penalty weight is pretty weak but penalties serve a purpose: they give meaning to the death overall since permadeath does not exist anymore.
IMO, we have to have a fairly harsh death penalty so people will avoid dying. Look at WoW where death means pritty much nothing. No one is afraid of it, no one cares, and in PvP people just do stupid things because they know if they will get killed it is alright. Death doesnt take away your skill level so that is no big deal. Geneal EXP is easy to earn back, although I would agree that 20% exp hit is a bit too harsh; but I can deal with that as long as you cant loose a level to death.
Well for any of you guys that want to give RF online a try there is an open beta going on in the philipines now so here's a link for it http://www.risingforce.ph/main2.html you can download and read about the game here
the classes look very weak and limited and my opinion is that skilling would evolve your class (see EVE or Entropia). Thus if you have a racial bonus on some skills, also some class bonuses, you can still skill up other skills outside the parameters of your class i.e. everything!
Maybe this is what they are doing in which case this could be a gr8 game...although I think my money is on Age Of Conan for 2006
They banned all non Phil IPs from open beta Fenrir767. There is always Proxy but it is just too much of a bother.
Dont worry about the game, i want the address of where to get the scantily clad cora female piccies please !
