Modern Populated Hardcore MMORPGs?

GondeliusGondelius Member Posts: 1

The only "Hardcore" MMORPGs that I kept up with last year were Darkfall Unholy Wars and Mortal Online. Mortal Online unfortunately has proven unlucky in regards to receiving consistent (and much needed) updates, and according to the reviews I've read and watched, Darkfall Unholy Wars has fallen very short on reaching the expectations.

Are there any Hardcore MMORPGs coming out anytime soon that look like they have a decent amount of potential? Or maybe currently-populated Hardcore MMORPGs that I've somehow managed to overlook?

I wish mortal was coded better because my brand new laptop cannot handle it.  Though I can play Mass Effect 3 and Dragon Age 2 with no problems whatsoever.  I have had a big problem for the past few years.  I cannot find a game that will hold my attention for over three months.  The only game that has done is League of Legends.  Which I played for over a year and still drop in every now and then.  One thing you might consider is Mount and Blade.  It is a first person fighting game with sword and shield ect ect.  You usually have about 60 players on each side fight over a map and its quite a blast.  I haven't purchased the latest so I can't give much details.

You don't have to play a hardcore MMO to get the hardcore MMO experience. Play a normal MMO and just delete your toon when you die.

I like what you did there, but for that to be a viable option you need mechanics in place.  I also think the OP is defining hardcore as full loot pvp.  And I agree Eve is up there, probably above the ones he mentioned. Unless the fantasy theme, is also apart of his hardcore definition.

Funny thing that the OP wants Full Loot PVP and blames MO for not being that populated.  What he does not seem to get is the Logic that that base of player is about .01% of the entire MMO community and there is very little success in making a game for that niche market.  Hence MO being an off the radar low population MMO.

WoW is a modern populated MMO. And once you get to raiding, it is rather hardcore (only 1% or something of the population can successfully raid). I'd say Vanguard has even more hardcore raids, but the world feels so dead. Maybe EQ2, but I thought WoW had harder raids.

I would disagree, WoW is dated and in its dying stages. The repetitive boorish nature has finally overcome the epic feeling of the end game, and the recipe only gets worse with every expansion after The Burning Crusade.  The raids are incredibly easy, and the mechanics get more convoluted, but not harder.

Well, this is not an mmoRPG per say, but EVE recently celebrated 10 year anniversary, had a very nice fanfest, recently just released its DUST514 FPS(so we can bombard them from space lol), and is preparing to release the next free expansion this June. The population, even though it is smaller compared to the big ones, is increasing steadily over time. I am personally having a blast in this sandbox game (well I guess mainly for the high risk and reward feeling). I could keep describing the game endlessly, but I'll just save you the reading time xD.

Someone said WOW is hardcore.  Hahahahahhahahahahahhhaahahahhahahahahhahahahah

Wizardry Online is most hardcore I have ever seen.  Actually I need to try it again.

Just be warned that this game is perm death and full loot.  No matter who or what kills you.

Salem is a fully open sandbox MMO with deep crafting elements. The game features permadeath as one of its main gimmicks, along with an in-depth character development system without classes and set roles, where the player can chose which kind of game to play. Taking place in the time of the first Pilgrims, Salem lets you live as an explorer in the new world; building your settlement, learning new skills and maybe fight with your neighbours.

The only place in Salem not built by the players is the main city Boston, which is a safe-zone where one can meet other players, trade, converse and enjoy the social aspects of the game. Outside of Boston only wilderness awaits, and the further you come from civilization the darker and more dangerous the world around you becomes. Until you reach the deep lumberwoods and no longer have to fear Pilgrims but instead witches and hidebehinds...

Actually games like Mortal online and Darkfall would be more populated if they where done better.. Sure don't get me wrong they would still be low population compared to other games as full loot pvp is a niche market.. but the recent success of some of the sandbox games on kickstarter and indiegogo over the last few months clearly shows that there are enough people out there wanting this type of game.

If MO was less buggy then I'm pretty sure the population would be a lot better and more stable.

Minecraft?  There is nothing more hardcore than when a Skeleton kills you and puts all your diamond armor and enchanted bow on to guard all your dropped stuff.

Your definition of hardcore is limited to PVP so I would say EvE is the best of the bunch as far as support and features go.

WoW had a round 12 million subscribers, now it's a bit under 10 million give or take. It has lost 20% of it's playerbase in about 8-9 years. It's still the #1 MMO in the world. It's not "dying". I know it's cool and all to hate on the "Top Dog",but no matter how hard you wish it or think it or even type it,still won't make it anything less than the top dog. 10 mill or so subs does not equate to a game "dying"

The Secret World is a great replacement for all the other MMORPGs mentioned in this entire thread. Mostly because I hate Eve, but also because TSW is genuinely fun and not noob friendly. (If you have to right click to navigate, then you have failed as a human being.)

Tsw and wow aren't "hardcore" mmo.

Read the ops post. He wants something with the tension of DF and mo, but better quality and with a strong player base.

Only one mmo matches those criteria - eve

a sandbox mmorpg =/= ffa pvp.

i dont know who came up with this idea that all sandbox games must have ffa full loot pvp.

as to MO being less buggy and drawing in more players, perhaps. but there is a reason that these games are developed by the groups they are: no one wants to screw with this. pvp forum fights over balance are bad enough with games that won't do ffa full loot pvp. i can only imagine (and i have heard a few discussions by these players) what the forums must be like in DFUW, MO, or hell even EVE.

balance is a bear, especially when you have both full blown pve content as well as full on hardcore pvp.

having said all that i do hope that DFUW somehow gets it together and really gives all you FFA Full Loot PvP'rs a home. you deserve one, you've been waiting for a decent one since UO(?).

WoW has lost a lower percentage of players than most MMOs the last 3 years.  Its no longer growing and begun a slow decline, but saying its in its dying stages is just ignorant.  So is calling WoW's raiding easy.  LFR is easy.  Heroic raids are not.
