It's free up to 20, and going full f2p in a couple of weeks.
Can be very linear if you follow the quests, but if you just wander around doing Rifts and Invasions and use instant adventure and gather mats and craft and doing fishing/survival etc.
It definitely feels a lot less linear. And with dimensions, there is customizable housing - not open world, but it's a great system.
End game raiding there are a lot of cookie cutter specs, but you can have so many specs saved it's easy to keep dungeon/pvp/raid specs and another for whatever you want custom character building.
The pace of combat is a little slow compared to say WoW, and the animations are pretty bad...
But going F2P it's probably the best "classic" feeling MMO for the price.
Easily > TERA, LOTRO, any other F2P trinity-based MMO and a better value than WoW, and honestly with instant adventure and rifts/invasions and better crating etc. it's a better game than WoW.
PvP can be a lot of fun, but don't expect much open world PvP.
How's the housing system? Can you visit other people's homes/guild cities/etc?
Ken Fisher - Semi retired old fart Network Administrator, now working in Network Security. I don't Forum PVP. If you feel I've attacked you, it was probably by accident. When I don't understand, I ask. Such is not intended as criticism.
Yeah I do some pen and paper from time to time. Online isn't really reliable because people tend to say "Fuck you guys, I don't want to follow the rules and have a good time."
:[ That's what I need. A reliable table top group I think. Unfortunately, I'm not in the position to host an event like that at the moment.
I don't know if i agree with this 100% while there are asshats. You can find some pretty reliable people online. Depending on where you go of course.
mrputts
True, I'll have to do some research. I think I just hit a dry spell in general. mmorpg wise I'm still kinda leaning towards DAoC.
I would play vangaurd, but that game is so unstable it makes me sick. I really wish they would have fixed it.
check out the website meetup.com for games in your area. they host groups and clubs of all sorts and that includes tabletop gamer groups.
"There are at least two kinds of games. One could be called finite, the other infinite. A finite game is played for the purpose of winning, an infinite game for the purpose of continuing play." Finite and Infinite Games, James Carse
I have played most of the mainstream mmo's; Tera, TSW, GW2, WOW, SWTOR, Darkfall, mortal, etc.
I need something that I can sink my time into and feel accomplished. I don't want it to be a theme park either. I like the class system of RO and Lineage 2, but they both seem to be heavy grind/ dated.
I know of games that are coming out in these coming months, but I want something for the meantime.
I like:
Fantasy
Innovative class system and crafting
Sandboxish
well thought out pvp
Serious and anime graphic style, no super chibi shit. (I meant serious realistic, OR anime, OR heavy fantasy influence.)
I want to feel accomplished and see progression, I need something, I'm losing my mind!
I hear Dark age of Camelot is good, but it seems heavily dated and clunky.
all of what I mentioned above can be either or. I don't need a game that has all of what I'm looking for, just something that shines in a few of the options.
I have played so much, yet I am only satisfied for a couple months at most. maybe it is time for some rl entertainment.
duhhh! you want anime and then was thinking about dark age of camelot. like someone said, experiences from RL might be good at this point.
You are probably in the same boat as me. I have several mmos on my desktop, and they all have things that I like, but i am just to bored after maybe 10 minutes or an hr of playing. The problem isnt the games, Its that you dont have a bunch of friends you can play the game with. MMORPGs are not fun unless you are playing with people you know and can help you or vice versa. It could be a bad game, but if all you had a few friends to play with, it would be a lot more entertaining and rewarding. Or, maybe its just me.
Op I think the closest game to what you want would be eve.
But its hard to find a modern one size fits all mmo, like some of these older mmos that had a broad scope of activities, e.g. l2. Eve is the closest game with a big population, but you won't have housing and some people have difficulty with "playing a spaceship". Still it IS one of the greatest mmos ever.
The other alternative with the rise of f2p and b2p is to pick and choose a few games that are good at specific things. Which is what I'm doing, I play ps2 primarily as its the best mmo for pvp in years, especially now with the new alerts and map chain features that have made it much more strategic and guild orientated. But it is a pure pvp mmo, so I also play a pve side game, I've swapped around with those, tsw was probably the best though.
- [x] Fantasy: The setting is the typical medieval epoch accompanied by the use of magic, and epic wars.
- [x] Innovative class system and [ ] Crafting: The classes are of the usual kind, but the skill system is gorgeously balanced. More on this below. Crafting is inexistent. Since EndGame is still great, you should not let this bother you too much, however.
- [ ] Sandboxish: No housing. But the RvR-content being very dynamic does give you a very intense feeling of the community the game-world! More on this, right below.
- [x] Well thought out PvP: This is the crucial point. The game has an RvR system in which the community captures fortresses of opposing factions, in order to be able to invade their territories, cause riot, and steal their pecious 'Dragon Eggs'. The purpose of these RvR battles is of little consequence.Their result is PvP of the finest sort, most of it happening in large groups, but always organised, as in no other way you could ever get a fort, or recapture it, once it has been taken.
I hate large PvP in other games, where it seems to have no sense at all, and is merely confusing, not really allowing for anyone emerge victorious. RvR makes this so greatly more interesting, you would never believe it.
- [x] Serious graphic style:Very realistic, superb animations, walking and running feel nice. The combat can look clunky in the initial phase. But nothing worry about that, as it will feel more harmonious, once the occupation actually changes to fighting for fortresses in large hosts. Controlling the character through these fields feels pretty agitated, then.
Also, graphics are good in general. More on that on the bottom.
- [x] I want to feel accomplished [...]: Nothing is more guaranteed by RvR, than the feeling that your personal action is lastingly altering the game's procedure.
- [x] [...] and see progression: Same as above for Endgame. Character progression *before* you enter RvR can be a little demotivating, but this is compensated for by the community. Questing is generic, but PvE in parties is very worthwhile, making good groups great fun to play in. Furtherly, you can always just join the battles over fortresses earlier, gaining great motivation to go on with your advancement, in order to be able to have more impact on the field.
- [x] I need something, I'm losing my mind!: Get ChampionsOfRegnum to your computer. [Regnum Online, if you play around Europe.]
- [x] I hear Dark age of Camelot is good, but it seems heavily dated and clunky: Which is why you should totally play Regnum. =D
I hope you have already been able to spot the similarities between the games. Regnum Online has been shaped after DaoC. But while that may seem to announce it as a cheap copy, it is rather a 'counterpart' of it. There are things to like more about the one, and things to like more about the other.
But since you already announced DaoC as potentially dated, and clunky, it is obvious that the answer to your questions is Champions of Regnum. It is six years old, the graphics were refreshed mid-way, and looked quite new after this stage. The clunkiness is absolutely inexistant, and has always been.
Best wishes,
Laetitian

I hope you find something you enjoy. Let me know, if you should decide to give Champions of Regnum a try, and find flaws. You might just need the right stance towards the content.
From the looks of things - based off this thread, some other similar ones, and my personal feeling - we are currently optionless in our desire for that one dream MMO.
There is nothing out ATM that can keep you playing through the night and then making you call in ill at work just to play some more. Something to make you forget the world around you, you know?
Hope developers grasp this emerging player mood and put in some elbow grease into their projects. Cash shops and house decorating, as the general primitivization attitude are not going to cut it for any project in the long run.
E3 just might give us that something special. Or not?

I've never tried it but think it's time!
Played: Ultima Online - DaoC - WoW -
Good, great, meets criteria? I don't know, but it's certainly different.

OP, i totally understand you.
I played SWG for several years and when it closed i looked to other games to enjoy.
But, as you, i find them boring, mainstream, predictable.
The only hope right now is The Repopulation.
But, until then, its time to take a break from gaming and do RL stuff instead.
