I am just speaking from my experience. So this may not suit everyone.
I went back in time and played out my rpg history. I started this a little over a week ago. I went back and played Dragon Warrior for the NES. I played it for about 5 hours. Then I played some FF VI and Phantasy Star 2. Next was FF7 and FF8. It felt like I was giving myself a reformat. Getting back to reading the quests and not skipping through just to level faster. After that I went back to WoW. It gave me the appreciation on how far rpgs have come.
So now when I get at that burned out stage. I go back to my roots. May be strange, but it works for me. lol

Funnily enough I was just feeling this... you mentioned RPGs to MMOs, and while not related, I'm feeling the same towards RE. Been playing RE6 with my gf and decided to replay RE1, so I fired up my director's cut.
These controls... they're so much more agonizing than I remember. Spider bigger than Chris' body and I can't hit it with any gun because it's too low to the ground for normal-aim to hit, and can't get close enough (without getting hit before I can shoot) for downward-aim to hit. Running around in circles around zombie/bee/dog packs while I search for the key items is kind of worn out its welcome, heh heh.
While the areas where changes are not welcomed are most obvious, it's always nice to realize the areas where advancement is really appreciated. They sometimes fall by the wayside and get taken for granted, I think ^^
So very true...specially when there is only up...down...left...and right. No inbetween lol
Funny. I'm currently doing a run of ffVII and i feel the opposite..
Rpg games today lack the complexity and depth of their predecessors
