f2p does not solve the reason why people left in the first place...
People leave because they just have disdain for paying monthly subs to get acces to the game. You can make the best MMO in the world and people would still leave if that MMO follows a P2P model. That is how people feel these days.

Just renewed my sub and bought the expansion. I haven't played in almost two years and it's so weird mouse driving and tab targeting but I'm having a ton of fun. So. Much. Inventory - holy crap. Bags and bags and bags and banks and a guild bank filled with stuff I can't remember what it's all for.
So many builds and so many SKILLS and so many buttons to push. It really becomes obvious after playing current MMO's just how dumbed down everything has become. The fun factor is missing too. I picked up shinies and fished and crafted tonight in RIFT and set up my little shrine room. I didn't combat at all. Nice, refreshing change to the current trends.
I missed it and I'm enjoying the new content and the player housing a lot more than I thought I would.
And for the record, I like P2P models much better than "F2P" - so generalizations about games dying just due to pricing model is false. I think games die because they can't keep up with the content and because there's so much competition now.

If people truly had disdain for the monthly sub why would they play in the first place? f you were once willing to pay a sub and leave the game, you are leaving for more than just the sub reason.
And most of Rift's population drop was in 2011 which was before the big F2P craze.
Now having it f2p will certainly boost its population, and the people that were on the fence about the games quality and didnt feel it was quite good enough for a sub will play here and there. But im not sure it will have a huge effect on the level 60 game and the way the f2p is laid out (no stipend for subs is not smart) could lead to a situation where 350k people in the new model produce less revenue than the 175k in the old model.

It might for some . I mean I left because I wanted to play other games . Now that Im bored with those other games I wouldn't mind coming back and playing a bit especially it being free
Loading RIFT onto my new pc as I type this heh heh .
F2P for the majority takes away that feeling of "needing" to play since you are paying a sub. I wouldn't be shocked if from here on out every new MMO comes with a F2P option

this is one of the biggest truths. i felt it many times playing p2p games.

It will with me. The only reason why I left the game was due to my illness making me disabled lowering my income making it impossible to get a sub game. Now that I have the time it's ironic I don't have the means.

You can make the best MMO in the world and people would still leave if that MMO follows a P2P model. That is how people feel these days. So, you personally know how a majority of MMO players think?
Did you ask them one by one or did you conduct some kind of poll and had over 20 million unique responders?
Sounds like you are projecting your opinion onto the rest of the MMO populace and presenting it as fact.
Rift has been having its population coming back because of Raptr and it was before free to play was even announced durr OP. If people are being given a free game , pets and expansion plus 30 free days of game time of course its going to get people playing its common sense.
Also plenty of people go to the forums and tell people why they leave and trust me its never once been because it has a sub fee listed. Its because its still at its heart and soul a wow clone and still to this day does absolutely nothing at all better than wow does it .Contrary to this jaded opinion of majority on this SMALL site , wow is about 1000x better than rift ever will be and if you are going to play an exact end game clone of wow but with about 10x more grinding for tokens and marks than wow ever had on its worse day what do you expect people to do? Thats why all you hear in rifts general chat is wow jokes and dissing on wow by a bunch of angry nerds that just lost their first love and are burned out of wow. Yet they are ALWAYS the first to run right back to wow every single expansion that releases. Trion had at its prime maybe 250k subs , wow even losing subs is 8.3 million , you can do the math yourself and see why people leave.

I disagree. I played WOW for 6 years and left because it was complacent and mediocre. I can't think of anything WOW does better unless you're into arena. I've always been so surprised more never changed over but I think many only stay because of friends and the time they have invested.
I cancelled my sub for a month to save some money until the F2P comes out, but hearing about all of the new people flowing into Rift is really making me think that I will renew my sub and save some money NEXT month. Heh.
Currently playing: Rift Played: SWToR, Aion,EQ, Dark Age of Camelot World of Warcraft, AoC

things wow does better than Rift:
PvP (by a HUGE margin..the flexible soul system leads to kind of blah PvP 'classes'...WoW has a much better set up for class counters and such)
combat overall (Rift is extremely GCD spammy...WoW certainly can be too but just feels better than Rift. better animations and overall more fluid)
Raiding (sorry, Hammerknell so far is an anomaly...the rest of the raid content isnt quite as good or as difficult...not that its bad, but its not better/harder than WoW heroics)
Questing (again, not even close)
Lore/Game world
since storm legion/MoP: content addition
grind factor: people complain about dailies but for the most part they are optional. however rift's various currency grinds are far worse than valor points and the Rift faction grinds are horrendous.
things Rift does better than WoW:
class customization
HOUSING (by far Rifts biggest asset over WoW at this stage)
dungeon difficulty (They need a master mode for all the dungeons, but the expert modes are tougher than anything WoW throws at you on a group level)
the invasions are cool
PA system. It may be the worst AA system ever implemented but its certainly better than nothing. People wouldnt bitch about dailies as much if they got exp toward more stats/abilities for them.
things they are more or less equal on:
crafting
fluff (Rift has artifacts, WoW has the pokemon, archaeology, brawlers guild, and a few other minor things. WoW has tons more pets and mounts to collect, but thats because of its age. Both have a nice variety of achievement related things)
PvP (by a HUGE margin..the flexible soul system leads to kind of blah PvP 'classes'...WoW has a much better set up for class counters and such)

i jumped at RIFT after 8 years of wow at twilight's hammer.
many of those aspects are up to players tastes. i may like for example PvP more in RIFT than in WoW, or the opposite.
I think both are very good games and have many similarities too.
so IMO RIFT is a better choice, because i don't think WoW deserves 15$/month compared to RIFT.
I think the f2p announcement was great for this game. It caused me to come back after disliking the beta, and now wife and I are playing with the thanks of raptr. The start areas through level 25 were quite full of players, saw more people running around then gw2 when I quit. Joined a public group/raid thing and there were 20 people in it running around like mad men. I will say though after gloom wood the zones have started to feel noticeably emptier. Still run into people here and there but seeing more events go undone. Not sure if its people hitting the rift lite wall or people not getting that far yet or what. Hopefully that changes on the 12th.
Wife and I fell on hard times back in 2011 we canceled all of our subs and let them ride. Rift was honestly the only game that both of us played together (I could tolerate it even though it was a fantasy game)
Then Storm Legion came out. We were in better shape butt still not good enough to justify a sub when there were lots of f2p style games that we could try. So we held off. Raptr now however let us try everything out, discover that we still love the game (even though the changes in our absent time took a while to get used to) And we are once again looking at subbing.
Great game, best character class customization imho. Yeah you may not be playing to the optimal, but you can try just about any combo you want, just cause.
Play what you Like. I like SWOTR, Have a referral to get you going! --> http://www.swtor.com/r/nBndbs <-- Several Unlocks and a few days game time to make the F2P considerably easier

i think its a great game too. not many games offers what RIFT has to offer. if you consider the raptr reward, plus the excellent f2p model, then imho its maybe the top choice or at least one of them.
I've read these "yeah, servers are alive again!!" cheers after every single patch Trion released, as well as after SL.
Still the only steady thing about Rift's population was that it dwindled down to "1 server high, every other server low" soon after.
People were worried if Rift would survive the release of SWTOR, then TERA, then Gw2, then MoP...while people leaving Rift wasn't so much about other titles getting released, but rather because Rift itself was never an outstanding game with staying power.
Not everyone left because Rift had a sub, not everyone left because another title was F2P, as not everyone is going to play it because F2P suddenly makes it an awesome game now. Most folks i talked to weren't interested because Rift has always been a "meh" experience on many levels in first place.
The F2P move is not going to change this. Servers will go down in population with or without F2P again.
Trion stated that they went F2P because "it was the most wanted feature fans asked for". Aside from this being a straight out lie, give it 6+ month and Trion will have a rude awakening about it.
Comments
yes, more more are coming every day. i will agree also that it took them a while to announce this model.
anyway imo game is way better than i left it a year ago. already i m having great fun again. lets see what awaits after 12-6

At least it indeed opens up the door a bit. And if they like it, they sill sub or spend money in the game through other means.
