"There are at least two kinds of games.
One could be called finite, the other infinite.
A finite game is played for the purpose of winning,
an infinite game for the purpose of continuing play."
Finite and Infinite Games, James Carse

By game codes you mean sites wear you can accumulate a game library online?
GOG.com (Good Old Games) sells older titles and newer ones depending on the title. From the Wing Commanders to Planescape: Torment to Ultima Underworld sereis to Icewind Dale and Balder's Gate series to Grimrock to numerous other titles for pretty cheap prices and they have sales all the time. 8 bucks I would say is the typical default pricing for single titles.
Depends on who has the best sells. I check most of these when deciding:
Amazon
GreenManGaming (it seems they always have a -20 or 25% coupon going on)
GamersGate
GoG
Steam
Most of the sites above (besides GoG) sell codes for Steam, though some games are Origin exclusive. Sometimes I'll check Newegg if there's a physical version out too.
