For me, its the awesome graphics and scenery,  and the best combat system in any MMO till date (even tough i think it would have been even better with a tad more trinnity)  combined with the best PvP currently available.. On top of that the level of detail in the world is amazing, just listening to NPC conversations in town or during events is priceless.  And i am still discovering new things and corners of the world almost every day.

I tried some other games, just because i am a quest/story whore... (think the SWtor and TSW stories are way better)  ..  And even tough i think combat in SWtor is quite okay, and the world of TSW might be even better looking then GW2, i keep returning for the total package.

But... to keep me from hopping to all those other games and back again, GW2 could really need some more storie quests added on a regular base. I really miss those.

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

For me its everything the OP said and so much more. This is easily the best mmo ive ever played and i played just about everything starting with daoc up till todays mmos.

I love exploring and there is absolutely no world better to explore in. Perfect example Lions Arch did you know there are 3 jumping puzzles in there alone not to mention other hidden treats.

Also I think people have a misconception that jumping puzzles are just jumping sometimes theres hardly any and more fighting or thinking involved like that one where u have to stand on the switch under water and the wall crumbles pricesless. or the back to back jps in caledon i could go on and on. It just feels like the most alive world i can go almost anywhere freely to the top of that mountain way over there or under the ocean its fantastic.

omg and the under water combat how amazing is this!!!

I love this game and see so much potential i cant wait to see where it goes next.

I've played this game to L80 and ended up getting burnt out. After taking a 5 month break, I picked it up again to play with my wife. Even though she's not the greatest MMO player  and that I have to do some of the jumping puzzles for her, its made playing the game so much more fun compared to when i rushed through it the first time.

The scenery and the ability to just roam around and explore are simply amazing.  Sometimes I hop on one of my characters and pick a random point in the world and play as an adventurer, meaning I will not use any waypoints to get around but just travel the map.  I will come upon a group of people or solo and sometimes join up or help them out and then move on.  I will become involved with whatever the issue is on the map currently.  I really feel like an adventurer in the world this way.

Most of the time I am fighting in Eternal Battlegrounds against other servers.  Great working with friends to capture towers and rout the enemy.  They, of course, are the devil's spawn and need to be defeated with no mercy!  Lots of fun.

I don't feel the need to grind for gear. It really is not difficult to get the gear you need.  Outside of legendary maybe which takes a disciplined effort to acquire all the requirements to get, but it is mainly a cosmetic weapon so legendary is not really needed.

Lots of updates to this game!  I don't like them all but that is to be expected.  If you like achievements this game has tons of achievements.  I just recently started the Southsun Cove living story update and there are so many achievments. I doubt I will ever do most of them.  I simply cannot for the life of me win the Crab Contest.  These fingers are just too slow.

Jumping is another huge feature to this game. I love jumping puzzles even though I can rarely ever finish a puzzle.  It is still fun to spend time trying to complete a puzzle.  Yes, it can be frustrating but , then again, if everything was easy I imagine the game would get boring. There are some people who are terrific at jumping.

These are just some of the things I love about this game.  It is totally worth the box price.

Realm pvp because that's all this game has, spvp is ok but not nearly as good as wow's.

Combat is so bad that I cant stick with it long enough to reach level cap. Pve is very very bad. Its a very slow paced game too.

Despite all that I come back and run around with a sea of zerg fest players and take over keeps and supplys and other zergs.

The guild I play with in wow does real world pvp we are on a rppvp server its taken seriously. The experience is similar to gw2 realm vs realm only its more fun. The downside for some is there is no in game reward, but we do get bragging rights and flex our faction dominance on our rppvp realm.

I usually hop in gw2 after a patch, I play for a day or two then go back to wow. Not every realm on wow is like the one im on actually most are not. Its the players on both sides horde and alliance that make it an enjoyable experience. Not every server has that luxury. Gw2 fans can relate, 3 factions help gw2 out tremendously because even the low pop weakling server has an important role and an abikity for personal victories even though they dont show up on the charts.

I'm actually playing less now.  I was leveling a warrior, got it to 40 something, but then switched to leveling an engineer again, which is now 28.  I'm just getting burned out on MMOs now, so i take breaks and come back to GW2, with these updates, to see how it's progressing, which it has, but just not in the direction i would like it.

This is why I don't play one game or just video games constantly, cause eventually I'll get bored, most likely, at least for me, that is why I don't get burned out on games I buy. Also yea taking breaks helps a lot, that and just doing other things any way.

As far as the direction goes, I respect your opinion on it, spite me not agreeing but I will not get on you for your opinion.

    Reality.

This may rub some the wrong way, and i know plenty wlll bitch or disagree strongly, but GW2 is more fun and superior to its competition for the most part. Unless you specifically desire above all the type of  content most cherished and supplied to you in WoW(best of its kind for treadmill) or EVE, GW2 craps on your game in many ways that DO matter. the visuals, the audio, the animations, the way your character talks, limps and has a personality. the quest system is the best one. you see it in testimonials all the time of people on the rift and tsw forums trying to get back in. you see it after people are told to try such and such game after getting tired of or upset with GW2.

unless you want sandbox and lawlessness or hardcore raid progression this game is too good despsite its flaws. the fact is the economy sucks, the game has no lfg(soon remdied) and progression is too little(even for a non treadmill focus, there could and should be more). yet and still, GW2 simply is lovely to play for the most part and also makes other games feel old or terrible in comparison. it's more realistic to take breaks and wait on the game to improve than to hop to something else, because despite being better in maybe three or so features they're too much worse in every other way.

Also, by the time games come out that are actually on its level or better in many objective ways, lots of its issues will be fixed or getting fixed, because the developer still has their employees.

I pretty much agree with everything in the original post.

I love MMOs and have had an active MMO pretty much continually for the last 14 years. There are many things I like about GW2 and a few things I don't like, but there are a few things I can highlight that, for me, just make all other current MMOs pale in comparison:

    • Production Quality. The overall production quality is incredible. Everything in the game screams quality. In too many MMOs, there are elements from big to small that are just awkward, buggy, ugly, mismatched, etc... GW2 isn't perfect, but the ovrall quality of the game and the attention to detail are phenomenal.
    • Combat. The action-y combat does a near perfect job of of taking the best of hotbar, tab targeting MMO combat systems, makes it smooth as hell, then spices things up with skills that can hit with out a target based on direction and position, skill use while moving for almost every skill in the game and a dodge system that in slick, effective and fun. Other MMOs I've played since GW2 just feel clunky, frustrating and/or boring in comparison. I find it almost impossible to enjoy an MMO now where you can't use skills while moving and where there is no meaningful dodge mechanic.
    • World Space. The game is massive, beautiful, detailed and somewhat dynamic. The game world dwarfs the MMO worlds of most MMOs released since WoW, with out a loss of quality or detail. The game has NOT fully lived up to it's potential on dynamic world content, but if ANet ever get's their post-launch act together and works on adding and improving dynamic event content, the game could surpass great and be beyond awesome.
    • Character Quality and choices. There are some other MMOs that offer even more sliders for character customization, but for quality/choices character creation in the game still ranks as top notch. I wish there were more sliders and more options, but I've had no problem creating a dozen characters that all have their own distinctive look. Not just distinction for it's own sake, but each character has a look I am completely happy with. This contrasts to many other MMOs where even if sliders are present, seem to only be able to produce a few looks that all look like siblings, sometimes even across races, (I'm looking at you SWTOR). I'd like even more armor options, but there are enough quality options for each armor class to satisfy me and the dye system offers more than 400 shades, which is unmatched by any other title.
    • Somewhat Dynamic World. The game may not even approach the potential for a dynamic world that is inherent in the game's features, but it still feels much more like a living world than hub-based quest grinders. If Arenanet ever get's their act together on refining, expanding and improving Dynamic Events, the game could cement it's position as perhaps the best MMO to date.
To many other MMOs just loo and feel tired and old after you've played this game. There is a lot of room to take what GW2 does well and improve on it, but this game has launched a new paradigm for the genre and many players who enjoy this game will never be able to go back to MMOs stuck in the old MMO design structures.

The combat system isn't that great to be honest. And pvp is not that great either. However that is because i played Guild Wars 1 which is far superior to guild wars 2 in combat and pvp. Graphics ehh i think its just standard for mmo now of days. In guild wars 1 you could customize entire skill builds not be stuck with half of the weapon skills and other half you get small pick order from. PVP in guild wars 1 had huge tournaments and hall of heroes had people constantly have that feel of achievement. I don't think guild wars 2 lived up to guild wars 1's standard. Again maybe if i didn't play guild wars 1 i would have liked guild wars 2 but yea guild wars 2 was the biggest disappointment i felt with new mmo's that have come out recently.

Nothing. I left months ago now. I keep trying to pop back in for the events but just can't stay. I didn't even start the game till a month after launch and I have FIVE freaking 80's, 2 mid's and have remade characters multiple times for race combo purposes.

I know people want this game to be the next thing to God, but it's not. It's just another time waster on par with every other MMO out there. No better. I can't even drag myself back to any of the events anymore.

Even with the new WvW rewards/progression, whatever you want to call it, that they FINALLLY put in, it's still all pointless.

And they STILL can't put in an LFG tool. REALLY?

Like I said, I have 5 80's... I'm not a hater, but the game's not all that, not by a long shot. I have a lot of endgame characters in a lot of games. *shrug*

Let me start out by saying I am not a GW2 fan. I read this tread and I understand what you are saying. Its about the wonder and exploration.

But I have to ask.... Whats the point?

If I wanted to play a game to explore I would play Skyrim. I enjoyed running and hiding from dragons that happened along my path. Or killing that random bear or group of angry bandits. Finding and helping a  random dog that became my life long friend.

To me this is not what an mmo is about. An mmo is about getting together with your friends and ACCOMPLISHING something. Killing that dragon, uprooting an evil empire or obtaining that unobtainable rare sword that makes you the envy of the server.

Making memories with friends. Otherwise.... whats the point? Go play a solo player platform game if you want exploration.

Like you said, most people will disagree.  Visual, audio, animations all take a back seat to game play, balance, and variety.  GW2 is a great single player game that has no replay value.  That is kiss of death for an MMO.  Once you've done your bucket list of exploration, story, and dungeons, you've beat the game and you can uninstall.

I did not stay because my Guild left and went back to WoW, :( so i end up playing the game solo until i reach 80.

i had no idea what i was supposed to do when i reach lvl 80 i was farming karma and i got tired of doing so,

i try dungeon and i think after a couple of run i did not get any armor or good enough item to upgrades.

Pvp does not interested me in gw2. i prefer old good Battleground 15vs15  .

Could never stay in the same team of my friend more then 1 match .Since both of us were good we always getting split up.

world v world . is nice but to much time consuming to get item and always end up without money to repair. so i have to do PVE to get money.

its a shame because i loved it when i started .  the graphic and esthetic and art style. the combat is nice and everything. but when i reach 80 i got bored.

the karma farming thing kind of made me leave too. running around the map looking for  event.. seriously lol nope.
