Why all the hype for this game? (FYI. I am new to the FF games)
I am a MMO veteran and I am currently playing it, first FF game ever. I like the graphics but it is very linear. As you get to the higher levels does the zones open up a bit more?
The combat is nothing special, I don't like the invisible walls, and the floating pokemon things with the balloon are OVER the top (not good) for me. Why do Asian game's have to make such odd creatures? Why do they make the characters, both men and women, so pretty..... too pretty. I'm having issues with the map as well and being able to find quest turn-ins, etc is difficult at times. Does getting around and understanding the map eventually get easier?
I'm trying to play through the game and see what the hype is all about..... the game runs smoothly.... I'm enjoying the game and having fun but I'm not sure it's worth the subscription.
Some questions:
1. What exactly are JOBS?
Classes
2. Is there a talent tree?
No, but you can mix abilities from some classes.
3. Is it a solo friendly game?
Depends. Grouping at some point will be mandatory as you can't unlock certain important things without running through the dungeons for the story quest, but there is plenty of solo friendly stuff.
4. Do I get exp fror killing mobs when others are NOT grouped with me?
Yes, you can also assist other players and still get XP and loot for their kills.
Thanks for putting up with my noob questions. I want to like the game and maybe buy it but I need to understand the hype. Thank you.
What hype? It hasn't exactly been hyped up as much as other MMOs in the works like TESO and Wildstar.
1. Why do American mmos have to make everyone so ugly. I cannot make a handsome man to save my life in Rift and TESO is looking that way too.
2. I suggest you stop playing if you don't like Asian mmos. Final Fantasy pretty much set the standard with the looks of Asian rpgs
3. White teddybears are easier to deal with than Blue Space Goats? Reaaaaaallly? Wildstar has bunny girls, will you be playing that?
Any mmo worth its salt should be like a good prostitute when it comes to its game world- One hell of a faker, and a damn good shaker!
This game is generic as hell and doesn't hold a candle to what FFXI used to be.

Did anyone play PS3 version or play PC version with a Controller and/or use the Cross-Hotbar interface?
I swapped my preorder from CE for PC to CE for PS3 - the controls and gameplay and interface just look SO clutch for console play - I've been waiting for a kick ass MMO to play from my couch for... 10 years?
Ever since True Fantasy Live Online was announced - and then cancelled.

Playing controller and it works right out the box. Setup makes sense and its extremely responsive. I do however advise you to change some general controller settings. There are multiple targeting filers that go as far as automatically changing when you have a weapon drawn or not and you can switch them on the fly. There are also options for your cross bar skills that let you change from toggle to holding of LT/RT and much more.

Any word on if PS3 version is going to require PSN+ and the normal sub fee? Or just do an online pass + sub fee?
I'm probably getting a year of PSN+ anyways just cause it's 50$ and you get free games.

Yes it is generic, but what MMO isn't these days? What separates it from the rest is the immersion it gives you. The setting, the story, the NPCs actually having character, and the crowd that comes to this type of game. The player base is friendly, and helpful. Yes there's going to be a few douche bags along the way, but they're so far and few in between. FFXI was an amazing MMO, but those days are over people. Grouping with 5 others and grinding in a zone for 3-4 hours only to get maybe a level or 2 is down right ridiculous now a days with having a job, school, and family. Developers are aware of this now, no game should be like that anymore. The majority of us just do not have the time.

The number of free games and discounts alone make PSN+ worth it alone. I can't tell you how many games that I wouldn't have minded playing but wasn't sure if they were good that I got for free.

Yeah but some will buy a PS4 and ONLY play FFXIV on it, just like people only played XI on PS2 and nothing else. For a lot of mmorpg gamers, they don't have time for other games and really they shouldn't have to pay two subscription fees when Sony isn't doing jack since the servers/content are all SE provided and not Sony's.
Agreed...never been a huge Final Fantasy fan, but this one's got my attention. UI, combat, graphics, crafting - all well done. And to think it's on the PS3/PS4 as well - ok - mind blown.
Meh. Saying it is an excellent game is misleading, while it may be nearly finished and very polished, I found it to be extremely and unfortunately generic. Combat and quests? As generic as they have been a decade ago, even if it is smooth.
I just had to sigh as I kept getting the ever-typical "These rodents are causing SO much destruction to the city, please kill 6 of them" or "Prove yourself by killing 3 freaking rats" lines. Surely we have moved from that kind of thing, and I can't seem to favor it after games like Skyrim have proven it isn't exactly needed for good quest content.
2. "inovative combat" think of Tera / GW2 / Blade and Soul
After laying down 1000+ hours in GW2 i coulnt stand it anymore. No matter what zone i visited with wich class it all felt the same.
FF went the traditional route. I am happy they have done it and not tried to reinvent the wheel.
Why ? its still the best way to play mmo's it doesnt matter how good or bad it does in a particular way. It needs to be fun when playing, you need stuff to do that keeps you entertained.
FF offer diffrent ways of gaining expirience, just as it should be. Not in my whole weekend of leveling i became bored altough i would agree with the current cooldown on all damage skills at the same time. It feels you are are being hold back when you want to chain spells and attacks and are forced to wait.
FF does a few things exceptionaly well and to me it already took the place of best Themepark mmo on the market after a short weekend. To get me on that side you need to do alot of stuff extremely well.
Rift for example, i get bored of Trions combat in 2 hours... Animations just plain suck, there is no emersion between pressing a keybind and performing the action.
its just tick - tock
In FF they did do this on one of the best levels, just like wow, you press and bham annimations follows directly. But again the global cooldown locks you from using a niec follow up chain. I hope we can see some improvements on that one. I know Yoshi listened to the feedback and lowerd it to 2.5 seconds, but they need to make it like WoW 1.5 second. But thats personal brabbling as some people like an even longer cooldown !
Back to leveling:
It can get any more basic, but wich mmo provides something diffrent ? MMO's are just like that. There is no mmo that doesnt have quests. Its always going to be like
Bring me an apple Bring me 15 candles Kill 10 gobolds Find me a rope Speak to roger rabbit Return me a monkey tail
I dont realy mind it that much after playing GW2 tbh, as Dynamic events where even worse... One big zerg fest after another.... FF also has this, but they are something "extra"for you to do inbetween quest or doing alt stuff.
I dont get all these players who are "bashing" a pure themepark mmo ? Its never ever been diffrent.....
Iam realy happy FF went back to the roots of themepark and added a few spices here and there for us to chew on. They did a wonderfull job at many stuff, and this is still beta 3 and much is to be changed for sure.
If i could i would give Naoki Yoshida a standing ovation for his creation.

Meh saying the game is extremely and unfortunately generic is misleading. I found the game to be excellent as well. I guess we just have different opinions. I really enjoy the game play, the graphics, the soundtrack. I just flew through quest text, I'll do all the reading in ob/release. But if it is true to the final fantasy name the story will be good.
Yes the quest are standard mmo ones but I'm curious to know what kind of quests are people looking for that are ground breaking and revolutionary?
Edit: Oh I really enjoyed the 'H' feature forgot what it was called. I'm a sucker for completing stuff like that plus makes it a little bit easier for leveling up your other classes, I appreciate the thought behind that.

You mean the hunting log? Yeah it's a great little feature. From what I understand each class (including the crafting classes) have their own unique log as well which is gonna keep people busy for a LONG time...

They are not entirely unique, but like Archers/cnj/lnc start out with mobs near gridania, while pgl/thm/gla start out with mobs near ul'dah, etc.
I'm hoping upper tier they will have hunting logs that are more unique. It is a system they can definitely build on and I hope they do. Achievements are one thing (and will also be in the game), but the hunting log with exp rewards is nice as it encourages you to fight a wide variety of mob types and thus creates players who are more knowledgeable about the game.
They plan to expand it later with art and info for every mob, creating a kind of in-game bestiary. Though this will not be completed by launch.

There's one quest where you're asked by a guy to bring a gal a love letter/poem along with some feathers from these large birds in the area.
When you hand it over to her, she reads it and instantly bashes the guy. He mentions something about the feathers being symbolic for her to "take flight" and come to him. She then notes that the feathers he asked you to bring her are from a flightless bird.
My explanation isn't doing it justice, but it was such a funny and cleverly written bit that it stuck out.
Just one of many, though.
There's also a FATE that is cleverly named, "Copied Peistes", or maybe "Copying Peistes". A clear reference to the big "copy pasta" bit that went around regarding 1.0's terrain soon after the original launch.
A lot of clever and very well written dialog and such in this. People should, hopefully, take the time to read it.

Fernehalwes who works on the localization, and the rest of that team is excellent. Korean MMO developers should definitely take note, THIS IS HOW IT IS DONE. I hope for fans of Archeage that Trion has people 1/10th as passionate as Fernehalwes working on the localization for that game. It really shows.

Exactly what I thought while being bombarded with references to older FF's and leveling my to-be-Monk, awing over the fantastically written script and the beautiful animations and world.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

Just a nit-pick here, because that bit I highlighted always kinda irks me in how overly generalized and highly inaccurate it is.
Plenty of people who played EQ1 and all those more "old-school" MMOs, including FFXI, also had jobs, careers, families and other responsibilities. I had a full-time job and other responsibilities outside of gaming for practically the entire time I played FFXI.. over 7 years. I had the time for xp parties because that's what I decided I wanted to do with my time for that session. If I chose to do missions or something else with the time I had, then I did that instead.
A friend of mine had a full-time job, a wife, a child and all that goes with it. He leveled several jobs up to 75, completed almost all the expansions (I think he left before the ending of WoTG) and ran a group through all of CoP. And I'm talking CoP as it was when it was first launched, not after it was nerfed. He participated in weekly end-game content (Sky, etc).
Another person I knew owned a business, which occupied a *lot* of their time, on top of being married and such... and they still managed to do just fine playing EQ1, and then FFXI.
The examples are myriad, but the point is the same.
And that point is, this idea that "MMOs have to be more casual now because gamers have grown up and don't have the time anymore" is a completely baseless assertion. There have been responsible, grown adults with busy lives playing MMOs going back to when they were first launched, and doing quite well in them.
It has nothing to do with "how much time they had to get things done".
It has everything to do with how people approached the games, and what their expectations were.
The way people approached MMOs like EQ1, FFXI and such were as long-term adventures and hobbies. Their enjoyment came from simply existing in the world, and doing whatever it is they chose to do with their time. "How much they progressed" or "how much they leveled" wasn't their primary concern. Their primary concern was "how much fun am I having while doing all these activities?" In those days, people played for the journey, for the adventure, and the community.
Again, these were people with families, careers, etc. They weren't "unemployed kids living in their mom's basement with all the time in the world", as they're so often mis-characterized.
Expectations today are "I should be able to log in to the game, get several levels and complete a dungeon run in 2 hours". And if someone can't do all that, they complain that the game is too slow and not friendly to their "grown-up lifestyle and responsibilities". These days, for many people, it's far less about "how much fun am I having", and far more about "how much progress did I make?". It's about "how quickly can I get to the level cap so I can do end-game and get all the best stuff?" These days, people play for the pay-off / reward. They're in a hurry to "get to the end".
As with everything, things only seem "too slow" when you're in a hurry. And these days, people are generally in a constant state of hurry. Even with things like gaming, which is suppposed to be a source of entertainment. A pastime.
Ever notice how the people who complain about "MMOs feeling like a second job" are those who treat them like one? They log in and suffer over every single minute, concerned over whether they're getting "maximum efficiency" or if there's a faster, better way for them to squeeze more XP out of the hour they have to level. "I can't waste time on "x" because the xp reward isn't good enough and it will slow down my progress toward level cap! "What about Fun?" Screw fun! I don't have time for fun! It's all about efficiency! Now, out of my way, I have to fine-tune my gear setup and skill rotation to see if I can squeeze more XP/HR out of my build! It's all about optimizing!"
Then they wonder why they're all bitter and burned out at the end of it all. It's ridiculous. They ignore all that's fun about the game, and replace it with a self-imposed obsession over tedium and "number crunching". I've always said, MMO gamers are the cause of their own misery.
So, again... it has nothing to do with "people growing up and having responsibilities now". There have been "grown-ups with responsibilities" playing these games for years. People's attention spans have shortened, they've become more and more impatient, and their need for frequent reward has increased.
That's all that's changed.
So, if you prefer things to be faster and more casual or what-not, then fine. That's your prerogative. But let's stop hanging it on this fallacy that "gamers are grown up now, with responsibilities and less time" has anything to do with it. It doesn't.
1. Why would men need make-up and pretty face paint.... that's just ________!! I don't want ugly or pretty, I want realistic. I would also like to see more older looking type models. The men need to look... well, MANLY! Seriously, the ones available may "break a nail" and cry.

I don't choose to play those cutsy little people and cat people in game... but I do choose to play characters more realistic.
There are plenty of 'ugly' options for most of the races. Hyur, Elezen and Roegadyn all have ugly face options so I don't really get your point here... there is an option for both.
The way westerners brand all eastern games as 'asian' has always irked me as there is a VAST difference between Korean, Chinese and Japanese MMOs. The art styles are different, the gameplay focus is different and the depth is different. Most Korean MMOs focus solely on (often shallow) combat and graphics whilst Japanese MMOs have shown a much wider focus on non-combat systems and gameplay depth. Honestly FFXI and FFXIV are, gameplay wise, both very close to their western equivalents.
Those are moogles, they are an FF staple and part of what makes this game stand out as a core entry in the series. It has nothing to do with it being from Japan and everything to do with it being a Final Fantasy game. If you really can't stand them just wait until you meet cactuars and tonberries...

Basicly there are 2 types of themepark mmo's
1. the tab target
Its always going to be like
Bring me an apple
Bring me 15 candles
Kill 10 gobolds
Find me a rope
Speak to roger rabbit
Return me a monkey tail

The guy also does the English blog:

He is pretty funny.

Exactly what I thought while being bombarded with references to older FF's and leveling my to-be-Monk, awing over the fantastically written script and the beautiful animations and world.

Wildstar has bunny girls, will you be playing that?[/b][/quote]

1. Why would men need make-up and pretty face paint.... that's just ________!! I don't want ugly or pretty, I want realistic. I would also like to see more older looking type models. The men need to look... well, MANLY! Seriously, the ones available may "break a nail" and cry.
2. Asian games are different. Good and bad. It just shows how different their culture is to ours and vice versa. Sometimes when they "Westernize" a game, I'm not sure they know what westernize means...
3. Floating pokemons? Come on.... I would appreciate them more if they didn't have balloons popping out of their heads and weren't floating around. Walking around may be easier to take... I don't choose to play those cutsy little people and cat people in game... but I do choose to play characters more realistic.

It doesn't.
